BG3 Shadowheart gets to decide. No speech checks

This playthru has been manipulative and mean-spirited but not murder hobo evil. Drow from Menzoberranzan and worships the spider queen. So my choices have been tilted toward evil but not so much as to attract attention and get a price on my head (not slaughtering a whole druid enclave cause that's asking for trouble from surfacers).
Shadowheart choices - didn't murder druids, talked my way out of most fights which she approved of. Had her eat the mushroom, and asked her about her past, was very interested in Shar with dialog choices, and didn't really question her faith much.

My Cleric of Selune stayed silent. She knew Shadowheart would choose goodness over evil. She was right.

Omg! I did the same thing with mine!! My Selûnite didn’t want to intervene, fearing that whatever happened, if she swayed Shadowheart’s hand, that she’d resent her for it. If Shadowheart was to chose the path of light, the path of Selûne, it should have nothing to do with Tav, and only be her choice!

Did all of you romance Shart? Everytime I romance her I just let her do her thing and she turn into the light. In my evil durge run I was romancing her and had to F8 for her to become a Dark Justiciar EDIT: F8 and choose options to convince her into killing Nightsong, that is

I loved that. In 99% of rpgs, if you don't speak, they will do the obvious thing. But in BG3, you can really see how complex the characters are and they actually might surprise you when it matters.

well, in pathfinder wrath, i let lann do what he wanted. he prooceeded to challenge a demon to single combat and be insta killed. Amazing rpg, recommend, might be better than bg3

I was honestly shocked and surprised when shadowheart rejected her lady shar, after doing all the trials with her retrieving the stones and the spear, at the last moment to give up on everything she wanted to be her whole life, was pretty mind blowing

I don't. The major theme of her character up to that point was that you could not trust her and she did not trust anyone else. I tried to nudge her but couldn't let her kill Aylin. So I knocked Shadow Heart out and left her there. I went back and replayed the save afterwards and tried a dozen different ways to nudge her onto the right course and she always chose the wrong one. Now I find out the only way to save her is to trust the least trustworthy member of the party to not pursue her life's dream when she's standing right in front of it? Yuck.

@@NiteSaiya Except she shows you secrets and memories when you get close to her. In fact she tells you practically everything she knows about herself, but she hides away a lot of things BECAUSE she literally can't remember them due to memory wiping. She's been sold and indoctrinated heavily into sharran beliefs but is constantly questioning if becoming a Dark Justiciar is the right goal for her the entirety of act 2.

@@gumballz.9259 I had maxed out her feelings towards me and we had done every personal and romantic thing possible at that point in the story. To me, she was avoiding all the indicators that she was a brainwashed Selunite and I had no reason to expect her to suddenly stop.

IT depends on your own action, your companions learn about morality though you. This one I learned from this game.

She does this solely out of love for the main character. Play as a Selune cleric + use a mind reading spell (namely a spell, not a parasite). She will directly say that she did it for us, and not for the sake of Selune or herself, and mind reading will say that she really loves mc (I don’t remember the moment when this can be read, but it’s somewhere at the end of the second act before Shadowfall

I have not tried the evil character yet, but it was only logical...because in her core Shadowheart is brainwashed religious and will do anything to please Shar... They do give illusion that companions are influenced by you, clearly not :( ....that is a shame. Thank you for sharing, it was just my theory, and it looked like it...but I was wrong.@@medusalem9485

I originally complained about this scene because I was in the usual RPG mindset of "If I don't say anything, she'll do the obvious" and thought the only way to make her spare Nightsong was passing a DC 30 persuasion check. I legitimately didn't know she'd choose mercy of her own accord.

I failed the roll, switched a character, stole her spear and threw it away. She then tried to kill Nightsong, got mocked for misplacing the spear and it actually forced her to side with Selune

I might be wrong but I believe this pretty much entirely depends on your relationship with Shart, where high approval = this and low/mid approval = Nightsong/Aylin dies

You are correct, I confirmed this myself. I used the "Friends" spell to significantly reduce my relations with Shadowheart (when you use "Friends" on a companion, you lose quite a bit of relations with them when the effect wears off), which caused her to kill Aylin instead of throwing the spear away.

if you are a warlock, making her a justiciar is so powerful. she gets to cast darkness at will. and become immune to blinded. if you have devil sight, you and her can stand in darkness or put the enemies in darknes swithout getting hindered by it

I let Shadow Heart choose on my evil Durge run. She killed the Nightsong. I killed everyone in the Grove, not sure if that has an effect.

Weird i let shadowheart choose in my tab run where I killed the grove and she didn’t kill nightsong….so I loaded back and made her do it, they must’ve patched it to be more inline with your choices

It depends on her attitude towards you. You can check it by scrolling down on one of the tabs in her inventory screen, a number that I think goes from 0-100.

@@Isvooron ps5 weren't get that it just goes from Low, Medium, High, very high and exceptional. For her I was on high. I just kept reloading until I got a crit success.

yeah this was crazyyy the 1st time i failed the speech check and she attacked me so i reloaded and was like ok I'm not gonna keep savescumming. I'd rather aylin be dead and keep shadowheart so I won't bother with the speech check. AND SHE THREW THE SPEAR AWAY!! WOOHOO!!

For one of the conversations I had with her, I did not persuade her to turn away from Shar, so when we got here all the choices led up to her killing Nightsong. I had to put the spear in the camp so she could not use it. I was not romancing her, so maybe if I had more favor I could have convinced her here.

Damn I feel so stupid, I thought myself the heroic love intrest who changes her from evil to good and yet I didn't trust her at all and therefore made the whole thing harder for myself by trying to persuade her. It makes so much sense tho, since there has to be a way to save her even if you're not maxing charisma or rolling super lucky.

It feels really random what way she will decide to go. One playthrough she decided to be good all on her own. The next playthrough making all the same choices I would have to intervene or it was stab city.

Im pretty sure she still takes into account your past decisions and your rapport rating. If youre playing an evil character and have high rapport with I'm pretty sure she kills her

Does she always choose the good path if you just let her decide or is based on your reputation with her or something? On my "good" playthrough I did the speech check and got her to spare Nightsong. But then I was surprised on my evil playthrough when I just stood back and did nothing and she STILL spared Nightsong. I had to reload and actively encourage her before Shadowheart would actually kill her.

I wonder if this depends on her approval meter and your interactions with her through the game. Otherwise i find it odd to have a hard persuasion check that, if failed, forces you to kill her. Maybe an oversight?

It completely depends on your approval. By this point I had a 100 with SH but I saw people saying they had a 30 or 21 check. I never had that happen.

@@TangoMangoSS On my first playthrough I had a 100 approval and still had a 30 DC. It depends on which dialogue options you choose sadly and not your relationship and morals. When I played I picked "Choose your own way" and "your life is whatever you make it" and it was a 30 DC.

I'm surprised by the amount of comments that did not let her decide her own fate/decision. I think the writers did a good job at building the characters around their own choices rather than what the player character decides. Sometimes agency is better for RPGs.

I think it depends on what choices you make before I’ve heard if you do evil things around her like killing the druids grove, she’s more likely to choose evil action because remember, she gets the pain when she helps the druids grove so she’s going against her God

@@tubalord3693that’s interesting, perhaps there is a hidden counter for the number of times that you do good deeds and that she gets punished through the sharran wound. If she gets punished enough, she chooses good while she stays faithful to Shar if the punishments don’t occur enough.

I said "Is this truly what you want?" then kept silent. I didn't care which she chose, I just wanted to see what she'd pick. I raided the grove with her, Lae'zel, and Astarion; I didn't romance anyone; I had Lae'zel's exceptional approval while SH's was fair, but I kept the peace between them. I didn't like her a lot but I didn't antagonize her. And she threw the spear away. It was a great moment.

For me it's the stupidest scene in the game so far. It's like whatever you say, she just does the opposite, unless you remain indifferent in all of your answers. I was very annoyed by the 1st outcome as I played for the 1st time because I thought that you're supposed to convince her not to kill Night Song. Then I realised that you're just supposed to do nothing and say "I don't give a flying f*ck" in all of your answers

I was also passive and didn't interfere on the assumption she would follow her Goddess. I was actually disappointed she suddenly had a complete character flip and betrayed Shar. Had to reload and give her the appropriate nudge as I was on an evil playthrough and had already eradicated Lastlight...

I thought about it, but my evil character prefers predictability over pure evil in a follower. A Shar worshipper and their secrets is very unpredictable. Didn't annihilate the inn due to wanting a base camp to operate out of. My OC is machiavellian evil.

It's not a character flip at all. Shadowheart's entire dilemma is that she's a good hearted person trying her best to be evil. And she's just not that good at it. If you've done decent things up to this point (which nets her approval) she can't ultimately go against her nature here unless you goad her into commiting the murder.
