nick, the small flash is for studio lights (ir beam to trigger the eye sensor {slave cell}), and do things like fast fashon, cars, portraits in studio, without all the pc chords!! these transmitter/receivers are installed into the 'power bricks' in the system, so they can control the light heads.

My father was a photographer for the Smithsonian in the 60's and 70's. The Hasselblad medium format camera was his favorite one to use outside the studio. This was all before digital was invented. I wish he could see what the industry has done with digital cameras.

@@will9357 You know, one of the things I like is that he doesn't put out videos all the time. It actually builds up a bit of anticipation for when he does. I don't know if he feels more pressure to put out a quality video because he doesn't post so often, but so far so good. Haha. I think consistency is more important than quantity, if that makes sense. As long as you know one is coming at some point not to far off, then I'm fine waiting. I'll have to check out Ben Horne, thanks.

man you're a class act. the one thing that became clear to me as you were starting to show the images is that film hits you in a different way, it just provokes a different emotional or chemical reaction in us, digital doesn't excite the same way. we are analog..( and I shoot digital only these days... work demands and laziness ) but this video made me miss shooting film no doubt. absolutely wonderful review. love your channel and the videos.

I laughed out loud when you realized you were standing there in the dark by a liquor store basically holding a bag worth $45,000. I've had the same feeling with my Sony digital camera, and that's only about $5,000 worth of gear. You get so excited and immersed in what you're doing that you don't feel threatened until someone starts walking in your direction. Then it dawns on you! I can only imagine how much more anxiety that would create if I was holding someone else's $45,000!!! Great video man, I loved hanging out on the sofa and just chatting about this wicked camera. I suppose it was kind of a one-sided conversation, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Keep doing your thing man, don't change a thing.

These photos are not only terrific as photos, but the subject matter is A+. I absolutely love all of it. Those cars say so much about so many different things, too. The review was also great, and I'm pretty sure Hasselblad is very happy with it. The 'look' is certainly there, although I proverbially reach for my revolver when the word 'compression' is used to describe the properties of an image format... The film shots of the dirt were better, BTW, but not because they were shot on film. It's just the type of ground.

Nick, if you didn't already know, Fuji & Hasselblad co-produced this camera, so the colours are the same, as the Fuji made some of the sensor parts, and by the way most of these parts are interchangeable between the Fuji version (X-xxx , can't remember the exact model designation) and this, esp. for the H1 & H2 , but be careful, some HCD lenses are incompatable with the film back (6x6, Vs the 6x4.5 of the digital sensor)- with the H1/2 they are only used with the HC lenses, also not the orange square lens line (1/8000th sec. leaf shutter), the majority of the H's can use the older 1/800th leaf shutter lenses, but not the faster ones (this H6D and the older H5D, I think, don't quote me, but from recall) but those newer ones can use the fast shutters.

One of the things I was recently pondering was if it would be better to shoot 4x5 with a sharp lens vs 8x10 with a relatively not as sharp lens (and how subsequent scans and enlargements might be affected by it).

Hi Nick. Was catching up on some of your older videos and ran across this one. A year or so ago I bought the Hasselblad H5D-50c (used), so naturally this vlog caught my attention. Mine has a tiny nick on the sensor, but I'm able to spot-remove that easily enough. I've since had to have it sent back to Sweden for a PCB replacement. Don't ask how much that cost. It hurt. All that being said, my Hasselblad is by far the finest digital camera I own. The lenses are way beyond excellent. I was envious that you were able to fondle the 100c :) I own many excellent medium format film cameras, and am gradually improving my technique and style with them. I'm (sadly) a better collector than I am a photographer. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I've watched pretty much all of your videos, and admire your work. You actually taught me the tripod padding trick, my big carbon fiber tripod was killing my shoulder :)

One of your best yet!! I use a Hassy V system with a full lens complement, although my back is starting to complain about the weight. Seriously looking at saving my chump change for and X1D II. Less weight and a medium format sensor. Yeah Baby! As you say, there is something about the Hasselblad look, whether it be film or digital. Gotta love that cat - hopefully he will be in more vlogs. A COMMENT ON THE FLASH: I’m not sure what the base ISO was on his 100C digital back but many of the backs are as low as 25. When shooting at f8 and higher chasing some decent DoF, with such a low base ISO that popup flash is probably not intended to be anything more than a built-in catch light.

We have unprecedented flooding in the U.K. No snow as yet, but snow can transform an ordinary scene into something wonderful. I love the monochrome decor of the room you’re in with that framed print behind. A 40 grand camera. Nice. Don’t think I’ll be buying that model anytime soon, not unless I win the lottery and even then I’d probably buy a Jaguar XK instead.

nick, these are each different tools, and like film, it is the lenses as well as the sensor, and it's tech, colour science, etc which give the image a 'look', so it is a comparison, as this is a 'view' into the world of studio photo gear, and having a V system & a H system is a valid thing, as they have different uses, the H has auto focus, as it is a 6x4.5 cm digital sensor, it has a different view to the 6x6 of the V system, and there is more still diferent, as the H has auto focus and live view, the V has manual focus and a waiste level; this makes macro and wide open (shallow dof) shots better ( on the H), as you can see the result, and less risk of wasting film, as you see if the shot will work, before firing the shutter off.

Nick, I started watching this earlier this afternoon but paused it so I could finish while having a BLT tonight. A BLT sounds awful, but it's surprisingly good. I think a BLT will replace a gin and tonic as my go-to on those nights I don't feel like making a manhattan.

$45k? After 20 years of paying on it, I could "almost" pay off my house with that. Another awesome BGWG episode! Great, honest, review Nick! Thank you. There is something about flying dust/dirt/rocks that is calming to the soul. Yucca Valley Liquor, been there. ;) (Still pissed at you for driving up the prices of spot meters though.)

I actually use this body with the film back. You should try that if you ever get another chance to. Though, the digital back would make it an easy way of doing a test shot.

Wow... that BLT cocktail is almost just like a cocktail my friends and I pioneered-we dubbed it ‘Rancher’. Only difference is ours had a few dashes of bitters. Orange bitters work well. 🤘🔥

Made a similar mixed drink but with orange instead of lemon - I dubbed it the bourbonic plague. I drank a few too many and was pretty hungover 😂

yaaaa... i shoot street photos with my Hasselblad as well and what you said about being in the wrong part of town at night with it... i can relate. though mine isn't 40000$ it's the older H4D-50 still... people know it's expensive, i get looks and comments about it. mostly about the huge lenses though. most think it's a weird video camera.

Been watching a lot of your videos and have really enjoyed everything. Even though I don't shoot film, I love watching your process, and I've learned a ton. Oh, and Jack Daniels isn't bourbon...

Once again, another awesome video Nick! Obviously a camera I will never be able to afford or probably ever use, but live just watching and learning about new tools and what can be achieved. It feels dumb to ask, but I really love your style of photos and how a lot of what you shoot is in focus: Do you tend to shoot at a higher aperture to get everything in focus? If so, what’s normally your go to? Lastly, loving the dust cloud collection! Definitely would make an awesome print series... hint hint haha

Thanks for the kind words! Depends on what I'm shooting, but the landscape-type stuff tends to be at the higher apertures, assuming I'm not worried about the shutter slowing too much.

Beautiful images with remarkable detail even when shrunk down to KZfaq resolution. I don't know if it was the detail or the color rendition but they felt very film like to me.
