Archimedes recognised what was happening, but did he have an equation or formula to calculate why he was correct, did he also know or take into consideration gravity, thanks for any answers.

Those are both good questions but I am not exactly sure of the answers. He must of had at least some sense of the math because his principle state that: Any object, totally or partially immersed in a fluid or liquid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. At least that is what it says in Wikipedia.
