Are we on the verge of a new independence conflict in Biafra? In June 2021, Nigeria imposed a ban on Twitter after it deleted a tweet from the President threatening harsh measures against resurgent pro-independence activity within the Igbo community in the southeast of the country? Coming over 50 years after the brutal and bloody Biafran War - also known as the Nigerian Civil War - recent developments are certainly cause for concern.

Following the Biafran War, there was a sense that Igbo pro-independence sentiment had disappeared. However, discrimination and resentment has seen it reemerge over the past two decades. This has led to the creation of two main movements.The first is the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB). However, this has now been overtaken by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which is led by Nnamdi Kanu. His Radio Biafra is now a leader voice for the pro-independence movement. Although both insist that their methods are peaceful, they have been outlawed by the Nigerian Government, with IPOB declared a terrorist movement. More recently, violence has grown in the south east, not least of all following the encroachment of another conflict in the country: the Herder-Farmer conflict, which saw IPOB establish an armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). This all makes the situation in the south east increasingly unstable.

I did my research there’re three major ethnic groups in Nigeria. This is literally having France, Israel and Afghanistan to form one country and live in Peace it’ll not work.

100% correct bro and that was exactly what Britain did in Nigeria and to make the situation even worst the UK concentrated power to the north and as of today, they occupied every position in the Buhari government to an extent that when terrorist attack communities you will never see police nor military going after them but when we organize a peaceful protest in the South then we will be confronted from all angles even with live bullets by the military and the police and a clear example is the Lekki Toll shooting.

As an unbiased outsider I can totally understand why Igbos want a separate state, as the British experiment called Nigeria has been an absolute failure and has really only resulted in the people in the northern part of the country keeping everyone else hostage. It is the leaders from that part of Nigeria that has it in the mess it is today and I do hope that one day Biafra will become a reality.

The Fulani’s dominate every aspect of Nigeria even though the Igbos are one of the most educated and most industrious in Nigeria. The Igbos are not included in the running of the affairs of the country.

@@dzemuus Don’t forget the Fulani are not indigenous to Nigeria, they are also foreigners, they lack developmental skills. They can only destroy a system they are not builders. But exploiters very good at manipulation of a system, they come into govt sometimes through democratic means. Then destroy that democracy.

During an interview with CNN after his election in 2015, the current president stated unequivocally that he will only favour the North where he got most of his votes from. That is a clear indication that he lacks the mentality and ability to be a leader. Among all his promises upon assumption of office including providing security, constant electricity, infrastructural development, etc he has not achieved a single one. Interestingly, the Northern part of the country suffers more from his inadequacies. Biafra agitation is mostly because he is taking the country only backwards. The entire country is suffering. Nigerians have never had it worse.

Thanks. There is a lot to it, isn’t there!? It is fascinating how the Biafra tensions are fed by other conflicts. I was thinking just how many other issues in Nigeria that that I could and should try to look at. The Delta conflict has a long and highly controversial history. The Herder-Farmer Conflict is hardly known internationally, but is a fascinating example of a climate change conflict. And then there’s Boko Haram. To add to all that, there are also other separatist campaigns in the country.

@@JamesKerLindsay Thank you for the interesting post on the Biafra Independence Movement; your view on how end of secessionist conflict does not necessarily lead to an end of a secessionist movement is echoed in how the fadng-away of Quebec’s FLQ or Basque’s ETA has not heralded the end of their sovereignty movements. I had no idea of Biafra’s autonomy of 1967-1970. Interestingly, 31 July 2020, the Biafra Independence Movement joined the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO)

@@JamesKerLindsay This idea of climate change please we don’t buy it. If the government of Nigeria can lay pipeline from south to north because of oil, they can also lay pipeline for water. That word. Farmers-herder clash is the most fraudulent word ever used in history. Do u know cattle rearing in Nigeria is a tool for conquest. The whole world practices. Ranching. How can in this modern world someone will drive cattle from north to south by foot for more than 500 miles. 😢

Fulanis have been herding their cattle in the South since decades ago but the violence has simply escalated recently because the president is Fulani and has showed his willingness to not speak up or crack down on the issue and at times even defended the Fulani terrorists due to his own tribalism. This has done nothing but embolden them even more because they know there will be no consequences for their actions.

Iam a Indian, had a Igbo friend during college days ,he is so passionate about Biafra.This made me be a guest on Nairaland ,watching as a guest . Igbos as well as other ethnic groups ,are going thru so much pain due to Buharis evil and fulani supporting regime. The world is playing deaf and dumb role in ongoing massacres of innocent people by fulani herdsmen and Bandits ,ably supported by Buhari government and his army. The daily death toll is more than in Afghanistan or somalia ,yet you hardly hear in mainstream media.

Sandeep, The fulani herdsmen cause more harm to their people that outsiders nowadays. They raid northern villages , kill tens of people, kidnap alot , rob them off of their cattle and rape women. All these incidents are happening in the north more often than in the south. We are also victims bro.

We the Igbos are resilient people. We been surviving in that country all on our own. We had a lot of rich Igbo families before the war, but when the war ended, it didn’t matter how much you had in the bank previously, our parents were given only £20 to start life afresh. Properties owned by the Igbos in different parts of the country were seized. And while other tribes were busy buying shares in foreign owned companies operating in Nigeria, the Igbos were still trying to figure out what to do with the £20 and how to feed their families. All the strategic government positions in the country are being headed by the Fulani’s. Nothing for the Igbos. We are being marginalized and we are sick and tired of it.

We now have a lot of rich Igbo families again! Our families have done well with that money. My father began his life in a very poor family after the war. Now, he makes over 100k a year with us. My grandma's family has money, lost all of it after the war, and then she got a lot of money again through a restaurant, allowing my mother to come to wear she is today, a doctor with a good salary. Igbos really are resilient!

Its not poor anymore, the only problem is the high handedness of the Nigerian military. They harass any and everyone who is of Igbo origin. We're still very much committed to Biafra. It's one dream that will never die.

Well done, James, for this beautiful analysis. It’s sad that many young people in Nigeria today are not knowledgable about our history and that’s quite understandable. History as a subject has been removed from the high school curriculum; hence many rely on KZfaq and similar sources to understand the history of the country. That’s shameful to say the least. @@JamesKerLindsay your analysis you tried but you being ignorant of the sufferings of the niger delta and how it affected the war,the exploitation if the ijaw,ogoni.. it's not Igbo that are of niger delta it's ijaw ethnic group and others like urhobo,ogoni,etc Igbo dominated these minorities for political reasons and betrayed them that's what led to the war of which minorities were killed pls do more research read about ijaw sub groups,Ken Saro wiwa of ogoni,Isaac boro who was the first to agegitate to seperate from Nigeria being niger delta republic before the declaration of biafra after the ijaw man was killed

Lake Chad Basin is a green area, Sambisa forest is larger than most Southern states and a green area. Nomadic lifestyle, wanderers is what it is and Islamic conquest intents, Even their foremost Leader Sauduana of Sokoto gave prelude to this conquest ideology. Big ups to your content, impressive 👏.

I used to work with a nigerian igbo guy in israel and whenever someone asked him where he was from he refused to acknowledge being nigerian. He completely denied it and claimed to be a biafran. He was a smart guy. And I respected him for his strong nationalism.

Others are after their interest and not after marginalization of the Easterner. Nnamdi kanu is solely for our libration from contraption called Nigeria. Writer Nigerian government divided part of Igbo people into south south, north or north central sometimes called middle belt. Those in south south new they are Biafra but Nigeria Government is changing the narrative with corrupt politicians.

But they failed all

There is nothing to explain. He called the Biafrans that were massacred between 1967--1970 a 'terror group'. There was no time during the war were Biafrans called ' Terror Group'.

I am over 50 today, when I was growing up we heard about Biafra as history, we sorrowed for over 5 million massacred by the Northern Army but then in our vain ran the Nigerian blood, I had hausa friends and we co existed, but as I grow up and mature I began to notice systematic denial, injustice, neglect, massacre and discrimination against the Igbos. I didn't understand any of these but then Buhari who was one of the Northern military war machine emerged and made it clear how much he hated the Igbos and made it obvious and topping it up with his recent threat to exterminate the Igbos in his infamous "the language Igbos understand" which includes starvation, massacre and economic strangulation . My challenge is simply why has buhari not spoken this language to Fulani herdesmen and boko Haram who visited violent crackdown on Nigerians? Today I feel biafra without any connection to nnamdi kanu or his ipob group and millions of young Igbos feel same way.

The young men were ignited by the stories of the war told by their grieving parents, but the ignition is fueled by the unending daily experiences of the young Nigerian who feels shortchanged by the Political class and some unbridled statements from the northern elites.

@@discospaghetti6744 It amazes me when you make some insinuations. For your information even with your oil, the Igbos are adjudged the richest tribe (per square mile) in Nigeria if not in Africa. We only need our bothers to get out of the contraption with us. Many Igbo People don't want the South South to join them after the betrayal of 1967-70 but it feels magnanimous to join our brothers. With time you will see that the South South as a country will have a lot of intrigues playing out. The Igbos have never gone to a tribal war with anyone and has never taken what they never paid for. The problem is that the South South feels the guilt of what they said and did against the Igbos

Hi James, without doubt your video made my day. I am a final year Masters Degree student of International Law and Diplomacy in one of UK's university. Currently I am writing my final year dissertation which is a critical legal appraisal of ''Biafra’s Quest for Separation and Recognition under International Law''. I must confess that your videos have been a lifesaver at those moments when I needed clarity on issues. For instance, your post on WHAT IS SELF-DETERMINATION? was a masterstroke that cleared the cobwebs out of the way on that topic. So also ''Nigeria's Forgotten War'' . Now back to this video, I must admit that I was one of those who saw it first as soon as it was uploaded and quickly posted the link on almost all the forum of people with great interest in Biafran struggle. There was unanimity in affirming that the video so far singularly stood out as the best and realistic account of the current re-engineering of the the Biafra movement. I also concede that the greatest problem I have at the moment is maintaining that illusory academic distance required to engaged in academic research. How can I dispassionately strip myself from me? Who would save me from me? I AM BODY AND SOUL BIAFRA. However, your video has really helped me navigate that murky terrain to a great extent. Finally, without being immodest with flattery, I want to tell you that you are already being mentioned as a hero among many circles in Biafraland for telling the truth the way almost perfect. The only contention I personally have with the video is the part you alluded to Igboland being landlocked. This is a misconception that has formed part of the false narrative peddled along by those that hijacked the Nigeria history for whatever intent and purposes. Thank you so much! I can't say how happy I was to read your comments. I am so glad the videos are helping with your studies. This was really why I set up the channel in the first place. As a postgrad student, I always felt that there weren't enough resources for people studying IR and International law who wanted to relate the theories and concepts they were looking at to real world issues. It was something that I really thought about when I was doing my MA many years ago. It's great to finally have the opportunity to do it now. And thanks so much for sharing the videos. That's brilliant! I really appreciate it. On Biafra and the landlocked element, this is a really interesting point. A couple of other viewers have commented on this as well. It is a difficult issue because I can see how it would have access to the sea, even in its smaller form centred on the five states. The question whether that would be unhindered access? It doesn't look like it is. Also, under international law I doubt very much whether that would qualify as any sort of territorial waters, especially territorial waters leading to international waters. From a UK perspective, it could be the same as asking whether Greater London would be a landlocked country if it declared independence? It would certainly have access to the Channel by the River Thames, and could (and did) have a major port. However, any shipping would still have to pass between Kent and Essex, parts of the UK, before getting to the sea. I would calls it as landlocked. But there might be a case to think of it as a semi-enclaved state - although Gambia is the more traditional example. If we were talking about Biafra in its 1960s borders, you are absolutely right, it would have plenty of territorial waters. I'm just not sure a smaller Igbo focused state would qualify. I was a bit disappointed that your forthcoming pubication ''Secession and State Creation: What Everyone Needs to Know'' which you co-authored with Mikulas Fabry will not be on the stable before I hand in the final bit of my dissertation to my supervisor. But I have already pre-ordered it on Amazon. I hope to pursue further studies in the area of international relations and conflict studies. And I am not getting off your boat yet. Will keep coming for your very insightful videos. Still have a lot to learn from you.

I am old enough to remember the Biafra conflict of the 1960s. This was very sad for the Ibo people and their demand for freedom. I actually do not know why more African countries do not have the same problems as the Europeans took territories based on Geography and economics, mot language or culture. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much Jay. I was born a couple of years after the War, but I remember hearing about it when I grew up. I think it is hard to get across just how brutal a conflict it was. What I find most interesting about the whole story is that the two parts of Nigeria were so obviously culturally different and yet thrown together in 1914 because the north was effectively bankrupt and Britain needed a way to keep it going. Amazing how history has indeed turned on the drawing up of colonial boundaries.

Northern Nigeria has the best land for cultivation of so many food crops in the whole of Africa and you are making outrageous comment about bankruptcy. James, your report is top notch, you definitely did a great research about situation in Nigeria. It is imperative to stress that Biafra agitation is now spiritual. I must say that Biafra war may have ended when they declared no victor no vanquished, but in actual sense the war is still going on. Nigeria is a country full of deceit, injustice, lack of love, impunity, lack of human empathy, fraud, myriads unreasonable blood shed at close proximity to a flow of river. Nigeria as a country are made up of many ethnic groups. One ethnic group in particular "Fulani" are the instigators of many catastrophe in Nigeria. These people are not indigenous to Nigeria, rather they came into Nigeria through the back door with the pretense that they are Hausa-Fulani. The Hausa(mainly Northern residents) allowed them to come in and now the fulani had executed a complete conquest of indigenous people of the North the Hausa people). The bone of contention that brought about the Biafra agitation was based on the fact that Biafra are marginalized in all areas of life in Nigeria, and when they complain about it, they used Nigeria Amy to shut them down. Also the Fulani have an agenda to conquer the whole Nigeria, to make it Fulani nation. The igbo or Biafra people have refused to give their land away to Fulani people. Whenever Biafran farmers plant crops, the fulani cows would go into their farm land and damaged all the crops, and when the farmers questions such act, they would kill them in the process and called it herders farmers crash. Also, some of the biafras business owners that are doing great in Nigeria, the fulani would target their market and damage their goods worth of billions of dollars for no apparent reasons. Eastern governors stayed mute while all these crimes were going on. Nnamdi kanu later set up eastern security to protect Biafran people from fulani terrorist and herdmen so that biafrans mothers could be able to go to farm. The Nigerian government took offense to such set up and now are cracking down on the ESN to kill them for no reason. The question becomes why are Nigerian Amy after a security network such as ESN? Why is it that Nigeria Amy has refused to arrest all the herders or terrorist who has continued to kill biafrans in their farms and respective homes? Is Nigeria government aiding and abating fulanization agenda and terrorist in Nigeria? Why is Nigeria government not protecting the lives of innocent people in Nigeria. This fulani people doesn't understand the language of peace, rather they always want to incite war. Nigeria has failed as a country, the only solution is complete disintegration of Nigeria. This will save lives and property of indeginous people of Biafra and some Nigeria in extension. The killings in Nigeria must stop. I wish the international community could look into Nigeria and help them to solve this overwhelming problem. They should call Nigeria government in order because they are committing crime against human by killing innocent people in the Eastern region (Biafrans). These was why I previously stated Biafra war never ended because Biafra blood are continuously been shed on street corners. Once again, thank you for your report. My father fought in the Biafra War and my mother survived it as a teenager. So many lives lost and they suffer so much trauma to this day. Both for the loss of life in the war but also for the discrimination they suffered as Igbos before and after the war.

James ker- Lindsay. A point of correction. There is nothing like Hausa/ Fulani. It is either Hausa or fulani like its been made obvious today by the same fulani that has subdued the hausa people. This was a name combination by British government to help the Fulani who are alien to this region and a major minority tribe till date gain prominence and control. Apart from the Hausa tribe there are other ethnic nationalities there till date. But Britain decided to put them under subjugation by the coined Hausa/fulani tribal domination which is false. It should be noted that some of the original northern Biafra territories before the amalgamation in 1914 was carved into what is today called Northern Nigeria. As a student , I have always questioned the geographical map of current day Nigeria. Its the same way the south eastern part of nigeria was annexed into the Cameroons in order to reduce the geographical space of the Igbo territories belonging to the current day Cross River state. Just to let you know, we are all Igbos by origin in the south eastern Nigeria. Forget all these nonsense of divide and rule policies by Britain and Europeans. We know who we are and we are gradually coming back together. Biafra and ambazonia is a typical example. Biafra will not leave any of her territories behind. No one can reduce biafra to just five fragmented state. It makes no sense. We are all going. 'Let my people go' . All must hail Biafra

I'm loving the Igbos so much. Heard about them recently, and I must say it very much reminds me of Israel. The north are Muslims as I've read, and the south Christians, why would they be put together in the first place. I believe they are the first and only contraption that practices that in the world, if not only in Africa.

Thank you. I do hope that the growing conflict does get more attention. The problem is that there are so many other issues that much of there world doesn't engage with problems beyond their immediate neighbourhood. For example, there has been very little coverage of the Tigray War in Ethiopia and the famine that is emerging there. (In many ways, this is a contemporary parallel with the Biafran War.)

Evening Ephraim! Thanks so much. It is incredibly how little attention Africa tends to get in the mainstream western media. But dig around and there are some great sites. For example, the BBC does have a lot of great articles. Interestingly, I found some really great material for this on the BBC. They actually have a site in West African Pidgen. It is fascinating and surprisingly easy to read www.bbc.com/pidgin/topics/c2dwqd1zr92t. I love the World Service! :-)

@@JamesKerLindsay if you want an unbiased coverage on any Nigerian issue, especially Biafra and South-east interests, then BBC is never the right place to be. BBC is very economical with the truth, and they take liberty with facts. What do you expect? They're british owned by the way, and this is the same Britain that compressed two polar extremes ends into one colony, and continued to water their creation. NEVER EVER BELIEVE ANYTHING FROM BBC.

This is a very detailed news about Biafra. Kudos to you Sir. I can remember one thing which was missing: That is the expiring of the country called Nigeria according to 1914 Almalgamation, which was on 2014. This only could lead to total division of the 3 ethnic groups in Nigeria. Let international bodies look into this country because Biafrans have been marginalized a lot.

I have some things I would like to do with the channel and interviews and discussions is one off them. The only problem is that other commitment make this a little difficult at the moment. @@JamesKerLindsay yeah i also heard about this from a friend who said they both have gone into a treaty which was aimed at supplying arms,these gruops of people have really suffered enough and i am a living witness to this especially the anglophone crisis.the very first day the crisis started was right infront of me the day the lawyers who were heading to kumba were removed from all vehicles and beaten,luckily for me i wasn't dressed in suits else my story would have been different today.that's a day i will never forget,a military man pulled me down from a taxi and demanded for my ID i even wanted to ask what was going on and the next thing i saw was him raising a bat to hit me. Please really try to talk more about this because i can't wait to watch that video🙏🏻🙏🏻

I'm a young Biafrain man and I hate the fact that I'm still called a Nigerian. MAZI Nmnadi KANU will forever be in our hearts... He his giving us hope for a better nation free of Police and security harassment, illegal killings of peaceful civilians and many more. I started picking interest on Mazi Nnmadi KANU our leader when he refused series of bride giving to him by the Nigerian government of Muhammad Buhari for him to stop talking about Biafra while he was in there detention. Not too many people around the world would resist such a huge offer. I'm in my mid 20s and I can equally give up my life for our Leader Mazi Nnmadi KANU and for a better future for our unborn generations to come. Our leaser has also paid a huge price for Biafra as his both parents and some friends and relatives where killed by the Nigerian army in a broda day light few years ago when they invaded his home and was shooting spearodically. God bless Biafra (Land of the rising sun) It is Biafra all we all die fighting for it

It is such a tragic situation. After I did the video on the Biafran War I really wanted to return to the story and see what had happened. The Twitter ban meant that I came back to it a bit sooner than I expected. It is an important situation for the outside world to understand.

Thanks. I am thinking of making a return to the Balkans soon. I haven't planned anything on that issue, as yet, but I will look into it. I am actually rather interested in doing something on the Republic of Serbian Krajoina and Operation. Storm. In fact, I had a reference to it on this video, but decided to cut it out. But it is an issue that I have wanted to explore for quite some time.

@@edinkulasic5961 i read an article from a British colonialist about Nigeria and he regrets being part of it. He also said he wished he knew better but they didn't have the example of Yugoslavia when they forced Nigeria into existence. I'm glad Yugoslavia got broken up but the economy in that region needs to be tackled asap. I don't think they are living the good life they envisioned

As an Igbo person, the movement for the actualization of Biafra is deeply ingrained in the fibre of many Igbos. It's not going away any time soon. The North and the South East are too different to live peacefully together.
