In this new series, "Bike Shops in Japan", I'll be going to different bicycle shops around Japan and introducing their product lineup, services, location, and any other unique points.
Today is the first episode of this series, and we're visiting Y's Road in Nagoya (ワイズロード名古屋). Y's Road is a mega bicycle retailer chain in Japan, with locations in all of the major cities.
Their lineup of bicycles is massive, with lots of major brands in stock like Cannondale, Bianchi, Scott, BMC, De Rosa, Trek, and more! They also have a very large stock of various parts, including stems, handlebars, accessories, tools, etc. Almost anything you need you can find here.
This bike shop is actually split into two parts, the main bike shop, and then the cycle wear and other goods shop. They are both part of the same main building, but you will need to walk outside and around to the entrance to the second building. We'll be going over the cycle wear shop in a separate video.
Part 2
• Y's Road Cycle Wear Na...

The teal color is "celeste" which is pronounced cheleste. It's their iconic color. The one with the yellow accents is from the past when they had a rider who won the tour de france named Marco Pantani; one of the most famous cyclists ever and probably the most famous to ride Bianchi.

That Madone is actually the entry level of the line. 9.0 -> 9.2 -> 9.5 -> 9.9. They switched to the SLR nomenclature for 2019, now ascending from SLR 6 to SLR 9. Still, even a "basic" Madone is an extremely technical and high end bike!

Hope Sayaka ends up with a Bianchi. I bought my first Bianchi a few months ago. Just the simple steel frame, allroad Volpe. Really wanted a very simple all arounf bike which the Volpe fit. Only thing I changed are new SwissStop brake pads(stock Tiagra pads sucked) and a new Velocity rims set up for tubeless. Since I constantly get flats on my commute from any tubed setup, a tubeless setup is a must have for any of my bikes. Oh and as for YowaPeda, a big fan of the Shinkai brothers!!! 👍

"I volunteer as tribute!" (as Sayaka's future boyfriend) haha I'm curious to know your opinion about disc brakes... my local bike shop heavily marketed a Cannondale to me (which I eventually bought) that has disc brakes and it's never let me down. It's going on 5 years now! But I still see many models with the calipers and I'm relatively aware that they have to be replaced now and then. What do you think? Looking forward to seeing more long journeys in Japan from you and the wifey!

Yeah, I can imagine that the celeste green of Bianchi bikes are quite a magnet to lots of bikers as it's a unique and beautiful color. I don't like the Cannondale-green, though. But the new lefty fork with the single bridge is awesome and I think I'm gonna get one as soon as they will become available seperately next year. But my heart beats for Scott. I'm talking about MTB's though.

Two Wheel Cruise I'm still thinking if I should buy a roadbike at all. I'm very happy with my Scott RC hardtails' versatility on and offroad. Of course a roadie will be much faster. Maybe I'll add one to my collection after my move to Japan. I'm a fan of all black and white colors on bikes. Maybe a bit of orange or yellow tints like the RC (2012). Yes, an individual build-up can be expensive, but not necessarily. 2014 I had the opportunity to buy a brand new, unused RC (2012) for just 2000 Euros. The original price was close to 6000 Euros. So I stripped it down and sold all parts and kept just the frame (the frame itself was worth 2000 Euros). I got 4000 Euros for the parts and bought the parts I wanted on my bike and made it much lighter than the original bike. It's quite some work looking for every single part and comparing prices, but when you have the final product in your hands, your heart starts beating faster. And because I don't own a car (almost everyone owns a car in Germany), I have more money available which I spend for my hobbies and long-time bike-build projects.
@TwoWheelCruise
@TwoWheelCruise 6 жыл бұрын
Certainly piecing out fully speced bikes bought at a discount is a good way to make some money, but like you said, it's a lot of work.. I see no need for a road bike unless you're planning to enter in races, or climbing a lot, or want to cover a lot of distance. I'd much rather be on a gravel bike or CX bike with some bigger tires for most general rides.

13:50 The Bromptons are popular in New York City, but it's like a status bicycle. If you can afford one you have the $$$ The price are so high because the frames are manufactured in London. It's crazy the Japanese prices are more than the USA prices by about $300 USD. I prefer the Dahon the parts are easier to swap around if you damage it, Bromptons only work with their own parts :(
@TwoWheelCruise
@TwoWheelCruise 6 жыл бұрын
Wow, didn't know that they were also popular in NYC.. The prices to me just seem insane, and most things in Japan cost way more than they do abroad, while salaries don't change much, or are actually lower :/
@readysetsleep
@readysetsleep 6 жыл бұрын
One thing I've learned to buy while in Japan are the made in Japan bike parts like MKS pedals. Those have almost a $30 USD mark up vs Japan Amazon prices. Another thing about Brompton is they won't sell you any of the frame parts unless you agree to one of their mechanics do the install. They quote me $60/ hr minimum 2 hrs for a rear frame swap out.. Add that to the $200 quote for the rear triangle frame, for a total of $320. I think the hinge screw is another $60 item too. By the way any recommendations in Osaka for bike Parts Stores? I think I went to the Y there but it was small in comparison to this one in Nagoya. I was surprised Bic Camera has a bike department, I was able to pick up some brake pads there for 650 Yen a pair, those were about $15 USD in the states. It was the ones where you can replace the rubber.

There certainly are a few things you can get cheaper here.. they sound like the apple of the bike industry lol And sorry, I don't know any shops in Osaka.. try a local fb group for recommendations

Madone is now their aero bike, so you’ll only see it being used by sprinters, GC riders will likely be using the Emonda and Domane is for endurance or rough stuffs like Paris Roubaix Btw, why is Bianchi so popular? To me, a Bianchi must be bought in its trademark green (I think it’s called Celeste Green) or else go for other bikes 😆

Good to know! Madone used to be their main bike when I was riding them years ago.. And agreed about the bianchi.. I'm really not sure why, but that's a good video idea..

bike shops are like my candy stores. i could spend hours in one just browsing around. too bad i wasn't able to check Y's Nagoya shop. i visited Y's Shibuya and it's a teeny tiny place but i spent almost an hour there. imagine how long i'd spend in their nagoya shop haha.

If buying at a shop, you should be getting measured, physically getting on the bikes, and hammering the staff for advice over which is best for what you want to do. If you're not going to do that, just sit at home and buy a Canyon or similar off the Net because it'll be much better value. For people in Japan, the low-end group sets like Claris and Sora on beginner bikes are really good because they are all long cage and usually come with 32t or 34t on the back. Japan's best roads are in the mountains where you need low gears. Higher end bikes in Japan tend to copy pro European racing and come with higher gearing. Many will be semi-compact 52-36 and 11-28 on the back. With 36-28, most flatland weekend cyclists will blow up within a few hundred meters on a 10% gradient on Fuji or in the Japan Alps. Even Froome used 34-32 on the Zoncolan.

definitely best to get as much info/advice out of the staff if you can. I still use an 11-28 non-compact on my road bike.. makes for some tough climbs. Definitely better to go with some bigger gears. if you can get them stock on the bike that's even better.

That's a helluva bike shop. Shops here in Phoenix have very little on display compared to that.
