You are very correct. The huge influx of people to our province since the pandemic started has caused this housing affordability problem. The Maritime provinces were mostly ignored by the rest of Canada and the world as we were a lowly " have not" province ( The thought was that it was a nice place to visit but people wouldn't want to live here). The province was definitely not ready for such a huge influx of people as has happened in the last three years. It had never happened before, quite the opposite happened in fact, as young people left NS to find work elsewhere for years. So, younger Nova Scotians who do not make a high salary because wages are lower here, or those who are on a fixed retirement income are having a difficult time with the current housing affordability issue. This population growth is changing our slower paced, laidback way of life. ( which is one of the reason why we are friendly!). Even the amount of traffic on our highways has increased noticeably in the last few years. Our healthcare system is also struggling under the strain of rapid population growth. The wait list for getting a family doctor is now in the many tens of thousands of people. Wait times at the hospital to see a doctor for those without one is many hours long now. Some people leave without being seen. Many of our doctors retired in recent years or have moved to other better paying provinces or the US and there is no one to replace them. Every Nova Scotians knows someone without a doctor. It is a very disturbing situation but one your subscribers interested in moving here should know about, especially if they have any ongoing health issues requiring regular care and monitoring. Not all population growth is positive, especially when it is so rapid as we are experiencing now. The Maritime provinces are beautiful, are typically safer than other places ( although crime in the city especially has been growing with population growth ) and people tend to look out for each other here historically, but we have our challenges and they are growing with the rapidly growing population. I, for one, hope it stabilizes soon as it is quite unsustainable at current rates.

The author is right. You can't have high rent prices and low wages and don't expect people to leave, simple as that.

As a life long Citizen of NS. What concerns me is all the people from away who had properties that were worth so much and salaries far above what the average Nova Scotian made. They came in large numbers during the pandemic and drove housing and rental prices through the roof and now Nova Scotian families who have always lived here are going homeless because there is no longer enough housing and the price of housing has been driven up out of reach. Some of the stories are heartbreaking.

A good video and thank you for informations. The reality many people are leaving Canada because of high cost living. In my city Ottawa there’s now many homeless and that’s makes me very very sad. I will come to visit your city in summer 2023. Thank you again for your video 😁👍🏽

I'm all for people coming here, especially people from the higher earning provinces. It's the only way our province will grow and along with that eventually local wages will need to catch up. My wife is in HR and they get more and more Resume's from people outside of the province with asking salaries of 20% or more above the local highest bracket for said position. Most applicants don't want to budge downwards so NS employers end up losing them. Eventually the job market will have to adapt to paying harder wages in order to keep and attack talent and that is what we all are waiting for. We have the population boom now, but need the industry boom to follow and ideally you want foreign industry to settle offices here that are used to paying higher wages. Competition should sort out the rest to increase wages overall

Many homeowners in Quebec and Nova Scotia cannot afford to move to Toronto or Vancouver where average house prices are over $1 Million CAD. As result, they end up staying where they are.

Good luck moving to NS, unless you have loads of money. The province is over taxed and extremely under serviced in all categories of life. Rural areas are even worse.

Thanks for the update mama. However, there should be a housing regulation in place (not sure if there is one and i stand to be corrected). Also, with the current boom in price, I feel like the average person in Nova Scotia may find it had to secure mortgage due to their income. Furthermore, the minimum wage if reviewed can help. Speaking for myself oo, because 2024 by his Grace, i won buy house for this province 😁 Amen

As difficult as this is, I hope Canada keeps its population low. The us has such a massive population that the competition for young people puts me at a loss for words to describe it. We dont have hope. we dont have hope for a normal life with a good wage no matter how much school we have.

Yes, I am very shocked with the prices in Halifax. I am from Montreal and the prices in Halifax seem more expensive. Taking into account that there are way more jobs in Montreal, that is not sustainable. I am looking at New Brunswick now, much cheaper.

The most recent data (2022) shows that the population continues to GROW which is evident by the thousands of new apartments be%ing built in the HRM area. The vacancy rate is 0.6! Not sure who is providing your information, but it is flawed.
