Voices of Music FAQ
Q. How can I support Voices of Music?
A. Donate here: voicesofmusic.... and we will make more
videos like this one :) These videos cost thousands of dollars to make, and the money comes from individual donors.
Q. Where can I learn more about this music?
A. You can visit our website, www.voicesofmu... Also, subscribe to our video channel! Just click on the logo on our videos.
Q. Where can we hear you play in concert?
A. We perform in the San Francisco Bay Area. For a concert schedule, visit our website or join our mailing list www.voicesofmu...
Q. Where can I buy CDs?
A. Our CDs are available on iTunes, Google, Amazon, CD Baby and just about everywhere; you can also buy a CD in a jewel case from Kunaki: www.voicesofmu...
Q. What is Early Music performance, or historical performance?
A. We play on instruments from the time of the composers, and we use the original music and playing techniques: it’s a special sound.
Q. Why are there no conductors?
A. Conductors weren’t invented until the 19th century; since we seek to recreate a historical performance, the music is led from the keyboard or violin, or the music is played as chamber music~or both :)
Q. What are period instruments or original instruments; how are they different from modern instruments?
A. As instruments became modernized in the 19th century, builders and players tended to focus on the volume of sound and the stability of tuning. Modern steel strings replaced the older materials, and instruments were often machine made. Historical instruments, built individually by hand and with overall lighter construction, have extremely complex overtones-which we find delightful. Modern instruments are of course perfectly suited to more modern music.
Q. Why is the pitch lower, or higher?
A. Early Music performance uses many different pitches, and these pitches create different tone colors on the instruments. See goo.gl/pVBNAC
In 1681, Biber engraved and published in Salzburg a set of violin sonatas that extended the compositional limits of the violin. The sonata No. 5 in E Minor (C. 142) uses a combination of variation technique and double and triple stops alternating with free passagework to create complex textures and affects. A brilliant work from the one of the finest composers writing at the end of the 17th century.
For this performance, a new edition was prepared using the original 1681 manuscript. Voices of Music is creating a worldwide digital library of music videos, recordings and editions, free for anyone in the world. To support this vital project, which will enable generations of people all around the world to enjoy Classical music, both now and in the future, please consider a tax-deductible donation or sponsor a recording
project. With your help, anything is possible!

People who don't play violin or viola can't begin to understand the level of bow control it takes to get the phrasing to be so perfect and the shaping of the sound to be what Elizabeth Blumenstock made it here. In addition, the use of vibrato in music of the high baroque is used as an ornament, and here sparing use of it, and here choice of places where she uses it shows not only an excellent understanding of it, but also a top drawer ability to interpret the music. I can't leave this comment without giving a nod to the rest of the players. Both Hanneke van Proosdij and David Tayler do a top drawer job of realizing the figured bass and William Skeen's playing is never overwhelming, and always adds to the expression of the piece overall. I've heard a good number of performances of this piece in my lifetime, and really none compare to this. I'd be hard pressed to find fault with it, and I think this performance is now my reference point for any performance I might hear in the future. Congratulations to VoM musicians! You've done it again. You're as good as it gets.

I don't normally comment on KZfaq but this performance definitely warrants the highest praise. This Biber piece has such an intensely dramatic, chill-inducing opening and Elizabeth Blumenstock absolutely kills it with a truly awesome and electrifying entrance and performance, with each variation of the theme artfully and masterfully executed. The entire Voices of Music ensemble is, as always, spot on in interpretation and perfectly in sync with the soloist's artistic use of rubato throughout the performance. You all are truly one of the best ensembles I've had the pleasure of hearing!

Londonfogey I like how you describe Biber. "Never hit a duff note." Hmmm I like that. I have different ways I think of my ten or twelve favorite baroque composers (I'll spare u the list!!) but damn you're right about Biber: he's just ON (always), isnt he? Quite unique in that. super underrated! (this performance is very great btw. I really like blumenstock =)

Esta interpretación es una maravilla. Cada vez que la escucho acabo volviendo el navegador a la imagen de Elisabeth tocando. No puedo evitarlo, aunque esté haciendo otra cosa.
