A deeper look at one of the most famous and iconic pens of all time: the Bic Cristal ballpoint. In the video I look at the standard 1.0mm Cristal Xtra Smooth ( amzn.to/2D2JQlu ), the 0.7mm Xtra Precision ( amzn.to/2CE3kvC ), and -- my favorite -- the 1.6mm Xtra Bold ( amzn.to/2CHugdQ ).
Go ahead and buy a 40 pack. You'll be set with pens for at least 2 years.

I love the 1.6mm blue ones. I used to be a Steadler 430M fan. But recently their ink seems to have changed. It's more of a pale blue, and doesn't have that 'tac' feal to it. The Bic Cristal 1.6mm in blue has a nice ink consistancy, and never fails to write. The ink doesn't last as long as a thinner line, as you'd expect. But it's a fair price to pay. My work pen lasts around a year, and that's more than enough for me.

If the colours seem faded now to some people, I think it might actually that they have fading colour vision, rather than there being something wrong with the pens! People need to get their eyes checked at the optition's! This sort of thing can be a result of slowly forming cataracts.

thanks a bundle for this informative video. I do allot of note taking, and I use Schneider ballpoint pens. They look nice. But I was just writing with a bic pen and noticed that my handwriting was much better, and the feel of the pen was also way smoother. I then tested the difference to a Schneider ballpoint pen, and there are worlds between them. The bic pen I used is apparently the bic crystal 1mm "extra smooth" variant, which I wouldn't have known if not for this video.

Are those the original pens or the ones you buy in the stores now? Apparently Bic used to make the Cristal original pens that had the word original on the package and wrote a lot better than the ones they make now which don't write as well and the ink colors are much too light according to myself and several reviewers. You can buy old originals online but they've been discontinued. Some of them had orange barrels.

I refer to them as my finals pens. They aren't as fancy or as smooth as my other pens but if you go into a high stress situation in which the pens have to work and work on less-than-ideal paper they're my go to. Also helps that they are both cheap and reliable enough that you really don't need to worry about pushing them. Though since they're not archival I'm not sure about using them on long term things but it'll probably be fine.

Thank you for the suggestion. The eBay seller is located in Greece. I was looking for a U.S.-based business that offers it in blue ink. I did find an Amazon seller, U.K.-based and shipped by Amazon, but only black ink is offered. I'm interested in this pen barrel that only takes the BIC refill. (www.kickstarter.com/projects/ensso/aria-minimalist-metal-pen-for-the-bic-ballpoint-refill?ref=discovery&term=bic). I'm not crazy about BICs' 1.0 or 1.6 tip, and I like the needlepoint. I'll have to settle on the BIC Round Stic Xtra Precision 0.8 mm ballpoint pen w/conical point as they are easier to find. Me being as particular as I am really gets in my way. Ha! Thanks again.

Are you sure there are just 3 sizes? because when snooping around on U.S. Amazon I've found 5 propertied ball sizes backed up by the boxes the pens come in themselves, which I presume (rightly or wrongly) to be official from Bic (those sizes being in millimeters: 0.7, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.6). I guess this could just be marketing and stretching the manufacturer's definition what constitutes a certain size, but I don't know, and Bic doesn't really help either because they don't give any official Cristal line to check.

Hey man, so amazed there is a video on this. Where i am from in South Africa these pens are so common and i found in school they were the best for me to write. I now stay in the Philippines and they are almost impossible to come by . I got my friend to send me pens from SA to PH and hell i dont know if it is just being on the PC for years and my job, but i cant write , i am very "shakey" and i just cant write clearly, its terrible. Nevertheless i am trying to make notes of stuff i do and that but for goodness sake i really cant write , its horrendous. However , i am not beginning to believe that the pens i have tried here in the Philippines and these particular pens i was sent from South Africa , although Bic, seem to be different or "funny" I dont know if i am "write" but i would like to know from you or the community here, if you have an issue when writing and pressing the pen on the paper at a certain angle, so in other words at a 45 degree lets say, for me it seems to be very scratchy and almost no ink comes out, its like u need to really raise the pen to it is almost vertical or perpendicular to the paper.... I just dont seem to recall this i when i was in school and its driving me mad i dont know if this is mass production crap or if there is a difference in the pens ball size or smoothness when writing? The type of Bic pen i do recall was the lidless type with the clicker and the hook for your shirt , i seem to remember those used to slide nicely on the paper and they just wrote well at an angle, im sure at an angle ... I also recall getting the lid type pens Bic also where u could take the ink out the pen and u had that small back cap also. Those had less of a bally/slidey feel but they wrote nicely...i dont recall scratching or battling to write... unless i used to write very different those days, i dont know. Thanks for reading

So true, we are used to round everything, and I was horrified to discover during a job interview last year, when I was required to write more than just a brief reply, that I'd lost my ability to write properly, because I had mainly block printed words here and there during the previous years. I then sat down in my spare time and really got to grips with handwriting again. Now it is really neat and definitely legible, but you'll need to make the effort of practicing a little each day. Find a pen that works for you. For me, it's ballpoint pens, rather than rollerball or fountain pens. See what works best for you!
