Actually I find that the cheapo green lighter ends up running out of flint before it runs out of butane. Bic lighters will keep flicking even after it runs dry, here in the US Bics are pretty cheap. I always pick two up for a dollar after a friend or family member steals my lighter x).

You have to admit, if money and refill-ability are not concerns, Bic is by far the superior lighter on the market.

My son uses those little el cheapo ones, which, as you say, don't last as long, but you get more of them. In Canada, they are labelled Major. He finds that the flint gets used up before all the fuel is gone. So, one might think, you'd get a similar use out of them, but no, the Bic flints last after the fuel is gone. In fact, I actually thought of putting the still viable, empty, Bic flint into the Major that has fuel left.

Bic and cricket are my favorite as you can remove the child proofing. Pop that little metal spring out, and they become very easy to light - as they used to be before child proofing was a thing.

The whole point of a bic lighter is that it is disposable

Clipper is the best, refillable everything is the way to go. Sadly although Zippos are cooler looking they just cant be counted on, cant say the number of times all the fluid has evaporated on me. Plus changing wicks is annoying. Get a good clipper, full size, and you are set. Only problem really is finding the flints. Amazon may help with that tho.

Clippers are the best, they have a very generous flame, but the downside is fuel runs out quickly and the tank is small. It also lights every time and doesn't hurt your finger.

I must say, going down the "best lighter" rabbit hole has been one hell of a ride, especially trying to do it on a frugal budget for emergency preparedness. Zippos seemed cool until I read more about the bad fuel evaporation they do. A sealed trench style lighter like an IMCO seems really cool. I'm tempted to just start off with a 7 pack of Scripto cheap disposables for a whopping ~$2.50 from walmart then later on maybe getting a 10 pack of bics to stowaway for ~$11. I had totally forgotten about the electric push down to start lighters like the bic in this vid, I never liked them as a teenager since they seemed so hard to press down, maybe now as a grownup it wouldn't be that bad, but like you said they're in a really awkward spot of being more expensive than the regular lighters and more or less the same price as refillable stuff. Clippers kinda seem the best of both worlds, no or negligible fuel evap loss and able to have flint replaced plus fuel replaced too. I've heard in recent years people saying bics aren't really the end-all be-all they might have once been due to not lasting as long as in the past. Eventually I wouldn't mind a zippo purely for absolute worst case scenario stuff where it might be too cold or windy for a regular lighter to light or alternative fuel sources used, but as of right this moment they're kinda low on my buying list. I think the cheap clear low priced lighters definitely have their place too or cheap stuff in general...if you can get them so much cheaper than "name brand" stuff for a ton more, you're probably the same off in the end or possibly coming out ahead since you can get a TON of the cheap lighters for how much even 10 bics would cost. A jet butane style lighter and a cheap refill can is definitely an option. There's also a plethora of electronic "arc" lighters littered all over amazon these days that are rechargeable but the "flame" is really tiny and would literally have to be pressed up against whatever you're trying to light. A set of 50 of the cheap colored see-through lighters are only ~$12 something on walmart's website right now, and that's even without trying to get the absolute bottom price online

I like flat sided lighters, for some reason the rounded bic bothers me, if it's going to be rounded might as well get a cricket. I like the scriptos from walmart, or the flat house brand lighters at dollar general.

The old bics were good but a lot of the recent ones I bought to put away for emergencies in have discovered their flints turned to powder. Reliability was the main reason I stored bics but now I don't trust them to last in storage. I switched to clippers now. At least with clippers I can change the flints if they go bad.

Clippers are great but if you are going to be lighting them repeatedly, they destroy your thumb very quickly… I don’t know why they make the wheel so rough and hard to flick

what pisses me off is when you drop an electric lighter they never seem to work again do you know why by any chance i have a few blow torch lighters that i have dropped and the spark dont get to the gas or something i truly dunno.

It always surprises me to hear Americans go on about how great bics are for survival etc. It's as though they don't have clippers over there? Maybe they don't? You should try out a stainless steel clipper only a few quid on amazon. I love mine it goes in my hunting EDC.

what about the other refillable clipper lighters that aren't shaped like a cylinder but shaped more like the rectangular style of the cheapo lighter mixed with the non transparency of a bic lighter they r also refillable but no one seems to mention them on any video pertaining to troubleshooting and refilling this particular clipper style lighter (obviously the refilling is done in a similar fashion) but my problem has come with the size of the flame itself only burning like it did when first purchased before refilled now I get a flame that isn't even enough to light a cigarette let alone a candle or anything for that matter without going out in a matter of moments. the only time it is ever back to a normal sized flame is when it sits in my car in the hot weather and even then the flame only stays a good size for a moment before it's once again retracted only to extinguish once more....can n e one help me?

All Bic lighters, are only filled about 3, quarters, with fluid.I think they cheat the customer, you can cut the plastic wraper off, they are all white, and, short of fluid.

refillable valve is just adding another variable, might wear out and leak, perish and leak or just plain fail, if you keep buying bics you guarantee reliability, they are tried and tested, flint always outlasts the fuel, no valve to leak, good trusted disposable lighter

99.9% of the time time I flick my BiC, it lights. With all the Clippers I own, it's like 20%, at best. I really want to like Clippers, but...
