Just finished binge watching all your videos!! I enjoyed all of them, made me feel like I was there with you sharing your amazing adventure. I often found myself feeling anxious and then cheering you on whenever you come across an obstacle or a challenge. And I was always blown away by you calmness and team work. Great landscape shots, great documentation. Thank you for showing us these amazing places and people. So happy to have stumbled on your Shimanami kaido video. Stay safe always. No waaay! My heart broke seing you wash yourselves under a tap, what a sin in the land of onsen 😀 We just came back home from our year long cycling honeymoon across Japan so it’s lovely to watch the sceneries again, thanks. But next time you go, do make use of the amazing public baths, they’re really cheap in the countryside and they were one of the daily highlights of our tour ;)

The V-brake pads on the rims wore through the side walls and compromised the integrity. That would not have been a problem with disc brakes. A recommendation would be Ryde Andra or Sputnik rims which are plenty strong enough for carrying extra weight, combined with disc brakes would make a very durable, long lasting combination. Thanks for the Scrubba bag tip, we will look into that!! But how are you going to quick dry 😉 Thanks!

In the land of udon and ramen, penne are the best, aren't they? Lovely movie with your signature calmness and deep appreciation of generosity. At this very time of 2020, I was supposed to be en route for my 1-year slow exploration of Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The China coronavirus makes advanced planning irrelevant. One step at a time, one day after the other. Are you going to hold a live Q&A?

@@WheelstoWander Hello Eric, I've got enough questions for a 60-minute Q&A 😁. I've been bike packing across Asia for 15 years, between 3 to 5 weeks with only 1 or 2 border crossings. Easy. The logistical challenges of intercontinental bike touring is a major part of planning. Add to that the filming, editing, cooking, I admire your dedication to sharing your experience with yiur audience. Also I am really impressed by the loads you carry on your Koga. The bike itself is quite heavy. You guys are tough cookies.

Hi Alan, in short: we funded the trip ourselves, we both worked and had some savings. Our average daily budget was 25 euro's, this included food, visa's, repairs on our bikes and a hotel stay once in a while. Sometimes we spent less, sometimes more. In Europe or Japan we exceeded that amount (we stealth camped most of the time, or used campings to shower and use electricity), but in SE Asia we lived for 10 to 15 dollars a day. If we would have lived really frugal we could have extend the journey by a year.

Hi Alan I did tour Japan for 45 days for under 700 euros. Camp every night. Bought food in Supermarkets. That's very doable.

Are you still in Japan? How is the lockdown affecting things there? I was meant to be there by now, but have been in Cambodia for two months now, waiting for borders to open up. Great video as ever :)

Thanks DeanoRav! Japan was shot before corona. At the moment we are back home sitting it out (actually we are cycling around NL now ;.) We were in Cambodia during and could get one of the last flights out in BKK. How have you been doing there in lockdown? Hope everything is well 🙏🏼

@@WheelstoWander Thanks for the information. Yeah I changed tack and got the train back from Hat Yai (cycled from Langkawi) to BKK as it had hit in Japan. I then set off to Vietnam, and here I am in Siem Reap. Been here a couple of months now (click on my name, you'll see my latest video - you'll see how quiet Angkor is at the moment - didn't really wanna promote myself here, but you may find it of interest). NL is cool, I remember it being flat and full of stroopwafels :)

Have you considered that the rim cracked because you are carrying way too much stuff? A laptop? Give me a break!

Break granted! The rim cracked because of the rim brakes compromised the integrity of the side walls. The laptop is why you can see the video in the first place. All the best!!

You... didn't find it at all odd that Japanese folks are handing out everything to you... think you may look homeless to them? First, an elderly couple gives you 10 bucks... then you get a free wheel for the bicycle... then a PARK JUGGLER finds you to bring you water and onigiri. Japanese ppl are friendly, kind, and generous BUT ppl don't just go around handing strangers gifts for no reason. They likely thought you all were homeless. FYI accidental pan-handling.

It's obvious, to Japanese people or anybody, that these guys are cycle touring... Japanese people obviously admire such effort and have a generous, kind and practical nature.
