The castle moat could be fed/feed into the Wald river. Would be a challenge, but I think it would make sense that the Lord who once built his castle there would commission medieval engineers to build a water system which is part of the Wald. It would bring a sense of realism and history to the area, and would be the reason for the name of the city: Blighty (wound/destruction - in the form of the mighty fortress) on the Wald.

Good sugestion, it would likely have been the other way round, the Wald would fill the moat and the castle defend the river as the medieval trade route. EDIT: OK, i think you say fed/feed, so i didnt need to add to what you said.

@@the_andrewgrech yeah but moats weren't really used as waterways and keeps usually had no economic activity. after all the keep was the residence of the lord and his family and guests. the river is barely 200 meters from the keep, there wouldn't be much point making a canal into the moat in medieval times

This needs saying more. If you’ve got a old town, especially one that’s pedestrianised it should be very dense. There should be small shops all around the old town and basically no gaps between them or between the houses. The road network could also be denser.

@@mateuszkunda9400 Titan's assets are the best! His Renaissance and half-timbered buildings are spread among a number of collections and he doesn't have a district theme for them, so you'd have to create one ingame. The one district theme he has is for his Baroque buildings, which wouldn't work for an English town at all. However, I have since come across "District Style: Half-Timbered Village" by m4gic. It includes assets manly from Titan and from Lost Gecko, another amazing asset builder, as well as some from other creators. I think so many people are misunderstanding the new DLC, the way I see it is the large land prices are to force you to focus on making a small pedestrian high streets or shopping markets which are full of really high density buildings.
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 Жыл бұрын
Indeed. Most real-world pedestrian areas I've seen are on the order of a few blocks... a single street that's been closed to traffic, or a few adjacent streets around a big plaza or something. Though to be fair, having an entire DLC just to do a couple of blocks doesn't make much sense either, so you can see why people are misusing it. Support for _shared_ streets might have been a useful addition... places where vehicles aren't banned, but where pedestrians have priority and where speeds are limited to a walking pace. Those are much more common in my experience...

Wait until the sale for as much as possible. I think Mass Transit (obvious reasons), After Dark (better bike options), and, if you love trams, Snowfall. Those will give you most of the transit functionality which is most of the game. Beyond that, see if there's some sort build you REALLY want more control over: you can build custom universities, parks, airports, industries. Which excites you? I have campus dlc (it's pretty good), parks (it's very good, and might actually be a must-have), and industries (neat if you like planning detailed freight logistics). You don't need any of these, and sometimes in gameplay you'd rather ignore them (my next build likely won't have a custom university, just because I want to maximize density; I cannot see the appeal of airport design in this game).
@Ascending11
@Ascending11 Жыл бұрын
If you are playing on console like I do, I would probably NOT get the airports and Universities DLCs. The reason I say that is because of the real estate it takes up. On console, we are limited to 9 tiles. That being said, I agree with the above; wait for sales. I got cities skylines, Disasters, mass transit, snowfall, park life, industries, and a content creator pack as a bundle for around $25 ($90 value). I ended up buying Sunset harbor (for the fishing) and the content creator pack that has the train and metro stations.

It looks good what you put in. I like the castle, but something is missing up there, don't know what. However the area seems too sparse for a medieval town. Back in time villages and towns had buildings and roads very close together because they could mostly only walk to places. And people only walked to places that weren't far away, therefore houses and businesses were very close to each other for convenience and protection, unlike CS where the sims seem willing to walk across the city miles away. But for realism I would double the amount of buildings and roads you use for this district. I think you should add the wider pedestrian streets for main roads and more smaller roads with tightly compact areas and clusters of houses. Maybe combine the two types of houses you use in the area together into smaller block sizes, and if possible find and add some commercial or business type in the same blocks with the residential.

the first thing I noticed about the pedestrian dlc is that your parks in the zones up the value of the ENTIRE zone making the people pay you more money if you have enough parks in it. As a result you actually make a huge amount of money in pedestrian zones with lots of parks

Hey I am very new to this channel, in fact i just found it, but i looked at the scene with the castle and thought "hmm there is something wrong with that" (even though it already looks good ;) ) And that is caused by the way you "build" the water... In the medieval centurys citys and castles where build as close to water as possible, the reasons are clear. Castles with those moats then used that water. What i want to say with that, is that your castle has no "realistic" source. If you want to have all that as realistic as possible you may should remove the water or make some kind of river flowing though/next to the little medieval district Edit: just looked at the other comments suggesting it too xD

Fan-flipping-tastic! One thing has been bothering greatly though: when you first built up this area, you said you were putting down a church in the large market place, but it's actually a castle and it's just as or perhaps even more spectacular than the one where this area is all centered around...! This village just screams for a large cathedral! I also think that the double tier key wall would look fabulous on the outer edge of the moat. It's a touristic place after all and such a key would give tourists plenty of opportunity to have a good gasp at the mighty fortress. History wise I reckon the metro/underground would have reached this area by now, it would be mostly invisible and allow a huge amount of people into the village. (Last and least: there should be some London style underground trains on the workshop, right?)

As much as I HATE using despawning, at a certain point your trains will just stop working without it. The game simply isn't sophisticated enough to understand it can't spam trains INTO your city without causing everything to just STOP. If they could fix that - have trains simply drive off the edge of the map, instead of doing whatever that weirdness is they do at the edge - then we wouldn't need despawning at all. And YEAH, I totally 'feel ya' about having to completely reinstall all your mods. UGH!
@lukasr5867
@lukasr5867 Жыл бұрын
It does work, you might just have to adjust the last segments of rails at the edges of the map. There is always a crossing / switch on the last node, which allows trains to enter and leave on both sides of the track. If that node is too close to the edge trains will keep blocking that switch while loading / unloading and cause more and more trains to pile up. Moving that node away from the edge (with MoveIt) until even your longest trains fit well on the last segment should prevent that from happening and make the (de-)spawing on the map edge a lot smoother.
@marktaylor6553
@marktaylor6553 Жыл бұрын
@@lukasr5867 Trust me, I've tried everything and watched several videos on it, and all I managed to do is prolong the point at which is all just breaks. Now, considering it used to break at around 30K citizens and now I get it up to 500K+ citizens before I get rail-gridlock, those fixes worked fairly well... for a time. My rail system is so detailed and intricate (well-designed to move goods around my city as well as in-and-out of it) that the game just keeps sending train after train into it, not allowing for all the stopping the trains must do. I add a new cargo station in, and it gets better for a time, and then it just ups the ante again. The trains take too long despawning at the edge (and YES, I've done the 'trick' to split the rails at the end and move the Y-intersections further back, but the trains rarely bother to use the second track to leave.). I've also deleted all my long trains from my mod list - that helped tremendously (no more trains blocking other trains), but eventually the problem came back. Like Thanos, its Inevitable.

Might have to sacrifice the pedestrian road across the moat to get a stone bridge? Or surround and encase the pedestrian bridge across the moat with stone and rocks. Making it look like it was a stone bridge built from the stone already there.

Excellent job with the castle keep and moat. It really makes this part of the Mediaeval centre shine. 👍👍👌 But as someone else said, the high land values means you should put down some pedestrian oriented commercial. Maybe some HD commercial in Elizabethian, Jacobean, Georgian, Adam and Regency styles along the bus road, and similar plus Mediaeval by the castle and chapel? And maybe HD residential as appropriate as well? 🤔

I love the medieval town, my two points are that firstly they were a whole bunch more densely packed and even one are where they are high density would be great. Secondly it would be better if you had some shops and buildings from different periods in time. I don’t know any area built in aspic that wouldn’t have had lots of the area redeveloped over the years
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's been pointed out before. Walled cities tend to be small and super-dense, since land values inside the walls were historically sky-high... with the result that buildings are as tall as possible, and packed in wall to wall. Small houses with large grassy yards would be totally out of place.

It has to be cobblestones, nothing else fits. Where you put the tress around the moat may I suggest a nature path to take in the castle with a few benches.A place to feed ducks etc like at. Wells.

Suggestion -number 1: to change the pedestrian streets to cobble stone- number 2: to add a parking lot in front of the main gate (both as a turnaround and to leave your car and switch to the bus)

I think the only thing that really stuck out to me was the "Modern art" sculptures in the medieval town plaza. Really strange to see cobblestone streets and old houses and then have modern art displayed in the center of the neighbourhood lol. Other than that it looked great IMO.

Why couldn't you allow traffic through the medieval neighborhood? Take away the bus-only street, let cars drive through... Or, you should add a roundabout as a turn-around, and some parking to allow people to walk into the pedestrian zone. Cheers!

Don't forget there things called "Park and Ride" in the real world. You might want to make one for people to park and ride into the pedestrian area.

weren't moats filled with spikes and not water? spikes stop someone coming over, water can be swam across. also castles were actually painted and not bare stone like everyone thinks.

I wonder, if you could de-zone any green area, creating many little pockets within (pedestrian) saving money. As long as there isn't a road, sims shouldn't spawn vehicles

It wouldn't have had a moat as its built on a hill far away from a water source. It may have had a ditch but no water would have been involved. Its more a Motte and Bailey style of defence.

I think it would be amusing (at least to me) to call the castle the "Ed Tea-ran Castle" because it is, quite literally, a Castle on the Hill. Or see if someone more creative than me can combine "Ed" and "Tea-ran" because I freely admit "Ed" isn't exactly the most medieval-sounding name...
