Just for my amusement I compared Bedford, Beds where I used to live, Alameda CA, where I moved to, and Bedford NH, near where I live now. Bedford, Beds. gets 24" per year, Alameda CA gets 22" and Bedford NH gets 44". I think you need to check your perceptions. Let's try some other UK cities, Newcastle-upon-Tyne 28", Edinburgh 30", Manchester 41", Cardiff 45", Portsmouth 28". Oh, can't miss London. 27". So the south east of the UK doesn't get a lot more rain than the San Francisco Bay Area which gets 8 months of summer every year. Unless you live in Fort William, which gets near 60" a year... or Seathwaite which gets 140".

Maybe we could have a shopping centre in the other side of town near the high street? I like the castle idea as well since there would be a point of interest. Maybe we could have a market square too as another point of interest. Reasons for a town to exist in the middle of nowhere that isn't a river. I'm just thinking in the long run, should we make a few villages out of town until we engulf it via urban sprawl? would be fun to see how that goes. Would be good to see some villages made for a certain purpose e.g. farming, mining town, etc. when that is unlocked.

@@Caro2Late Great! I have my favourite map. It's Eden Valley, you get it through the Green Cities DLC Pack. I have tried to perfect a city to the opening tile. Download the Green Cities DLC to unlock that map. Your challenge is to get to just 30,000 population but there are a few rules. 1) You can use mods but not terrain editor, infinite money or the demand tool that gives all demands. 2) You cannot buy any other tiles. The challenge is to get to 30,000 citizens...... but in the only one tile. I'll give you some tips. There is only Ore resource in this opening tile... and a small amount of farming pasture land. You dont have a connection to the railways (and cannot get one). You dont have access to cargo ships either. Only a wide but shallow stream/river. You only have road access and the one motorway junction. The challenge is to get to 30,000 population but only using that one tile and only using time saving mods (no demand, no terrain editor and no infinite money. Sounds easy but the land space is limited, you have to be efficient with your roads, your public transport and your industry. It will take you weeks, and several restarts.... but can you get to 30,000 population without cheating? You CAN edit the land, but within the rules of the game...(its expensive and prohibitive). It's not as easy as it seems. Good luck with your challenge! :)
@dycedargselderbrother5353
@dycedargselderbrother5353 2 жыл бұрын
@@sleepingwarrior4618 I looked at the map and see what you mean. The relatively small amount of water makes a 30K target doable, but the mountains take up a significant amount of buildable area. As you stipulated no terrain editing, which presumably includes Extra Landscaping Tools, you'd be stuck with the vanilla and expensive finite dirt system for terraforming.
@sleepingwarrior4618
@sleepingwarrior4618 2 жыл бұрын
@@dycedargselderbrother5353 That's it mate. If you respect the terrain, the money and the demand, it's hard because you have to change all your residential from low density to high density housing and it wipes out the population in doing so....so getting the roads right first time is essential. It's a brilliant map if you unlock the tiles but try and keep it to just that one tile and it's very difficult. However, the money doesn't present any problem as the population grows. Demand sorts itself out and you can make some terrain changes without doing it with the editor....the challenge is working around that mountain.....you REALLLLLLLY want the mountain to be flattened so you can build more houses. It's hard as well because you need a university to get it beyond the 24k mark. It's expensive but it's needed to breach 30k population. I honestly think it's the best challenge ever....it is possible but it's hard and the temptation to cheat is high. I'm thinking of challenging it to Biffa as a series in its own right. I think he will struggle. The bar is high but it is possible....but not easy. The river has to be terrafirmed. It's too wide and shallow as the game goes on. You end up getting water shortages and water towers come into play and you create space by pooling the river into a blob and have the water pumps feeding from that blob. No river anymore.

Hi Biffa, I'm loving the build of a UK style city. One thing I have thought of is that quite often, on busier roads with faster speeds, pedestrian paths are separated from the road by railings for their safety. For example, the road that leads to the industrial estate feels like it's fast enough that it ought to have railings.

When you have more squares unlocked and you're doing more of your highway, there's another really common way the UK uses to deal with traffic noise near towns, hide the motorway from view, and also side wind in some places (cos Good Old UK is the land of wet and wind) that you could use to bring in some more of the UK look. Motoways are often set either into a trench formed partly of digging a small way into the surface ground and partly of piling the resulting earth up on either side to maximise the height difference between road and hill (so think shallow channel with a levee on either side that is steep on the inside facing the motorway, but is a gentle slope on the outwards sides). The mounds either side channel noise more upwards so it's heard less from nearby, they block side wind, the motorway and all the heavy traffic on it are lowered out sight compared to the lay of the land around them, and the levees also double as ramps for bridges that cross over the motorway for local traffic. The usual junction format for this setup is a pair of one-way bridges over the motorway with their ends connected by half circle of road on top of the levees (aka an oval roundabout with straight sides) and the access ramps on/off the motorway use the levees as a foundation/go down the inside of them quite tight to the road. The two levee mounds are then often covered with trees/shrubs to prevent soil erosion from rain/to further muffle traffic noise and hide the motorway from view :) Not all motorways are like this, some places it's not practical, but a large percentage of motorways in the UK are obscured this way. Gotta keep all those lovely countryside views clear of traffic :D

Preston M55 Junction 1 / M6 J32 is a case in point. The main road is underneath the motorway. As is Junction 34 of the M6. Although Junction 33 of the M6 has the main road above the motorway as well as Junction 35. Junction 31 is pretty flat as a pancake but still goes over the road.

As you know Biffa, we Brits love to call them parks, solely just to confuse the tourists trying to walk their dogs through said “parks”. In all seriousness, I have no clue why we call them that, but all I know is that what is in actuality just an industrial estate, is usually called “Park”, “Business Park” or if they do decide to keep “estate” in the name, they’re called “Trading Estates”.

To amplify your comment about gridded housing in the UK, a lot of the late 19th-century housing that was built near railway stations and facilities was gridded or at least aligned rows of terraced houses extending over areas up to a few hundred metres on a side (though often with less connectivity than a full grid). Good examples include residential areas near the following stations: Reading West, Rugby, Doncaster, Preston).

When people think of places like Edinburgh, they're mostly thinking of Victorian Gothic or Georgian style architecture, you see plenty of similar examples in places like Bath or Brighton as well

This turning into a cracking build. FWIW, the minimum height for bridges above or below motorways from DfT standards is 6.5m for roads with lots of trucks and 5.3m otherwise.

Yet 6.5m elevation in this game doesn't seem like anywhere near enough. I usually go with 10m elevation changes for most bridges

People gonna say you don't get trees on a roundabout bc visibility/safety - you absolutely definitely do, in some places in England! And I *love* the amber streetlights on The Dell in that last montage, I got a little tingle down my spine from how authentic they look. Just an idea for future, if you end up with a steep hill somewhere from flattening out the land, make a feature of building on it (the brilliantly named Steep Hill in Lincoln is one source of inspiration, but you do get those really steep roads in a lot of towns up and down the country).

Loving the UK mods, would love to see a full mod pack of this. When it comes to UK Motorway Roundabouts, a lot of them are not actually "round". A lot are more like rounded oblongs, with two parallel roads crossing either under or over the motorway and then connected with curves at the end (there are of course though, lots of really odd shaped roundabouts in the UK, such at the Coryton Roundabout that comes of the M4 north of Cardiff), so you can go a little bit more wild with your motorway roundabouts if you wanted.

A note on the commercial/industrial need: I find that emptying those bars creates issues with there not being enough workers. I like to try to keep the industrial and commercial needs on medium, only adding more once it reaches high, and keeping residential need at zero. It prevents the "Not enough workers" issue and keeps growth demand going.

It was good to see you put in the traffic manager lane enforcement on the junctions coming off the motorway. In case you're not aware, there is a problem with highway-class roads that have both directions, like these UK motorways. Whenever there is a junction, it will treat it like a u-turn is possible, even though the model shows crash barriers down the middle. If you don't enforce the lane connections to deny u-turns, then you'll end up seeing cars driving through the crash barriers!

I know you're almost certainly not going to see a comment from this far back a video, but one thing I like to do on Motorways for that British style is to sink the Motorway into the ground so it is below the level of on/off points. Often when getting off the Motorway you go up a hill, and prior to that next to the motorway is trees on either side on a steep hill because the entire motorway is dug into the ground. Most motorway bridges are also on the same elevation as everything else, it's just the motorway that is lower than the other stuff. :)

Woah woah woah, I actually know this! "Wolds" is an old English term that described rolling hills - the name literally evolved from rolls to wolds. Cotswolds being the most famous, but there's loads of towns/villages in the Midlands that are called x-wold because they're amongst "the wolds" and sometimes on top ("on-the-wolds")
