As a Swedish classroom teacher you usually loop 3 years with your kids before you start over again with a new group. It has its challenges, as well, but it’s usually a pleasure.

I am sooo excited you get to teach 3rd grade again and with the same kiddos you taught this year!! Can’t wait to see your journey over the summer through the new school year…..

I have taught in a multigrade school for my entire career (just 7 years, I started late after homeschooling my own kids). I taught grades 1-4 for four years, then grades 1-8 during COVID, then this year I’m doing grades 5-8. Teaching kids year after year is amazing. I LOVE it. One of my 8th graders this year started with me 7 years ago, skipped grade six, and is graduating next week. It’s really special. I know exactly what their levels are and we can really do character development alongside their academic development. I think multigrade classrooms are fantastic and the next best thing must be looping with your kids.

I'm so excited for you. I have looped with a class before and it was one of the best teaching decisions I ever made. I took a 2nd grade class to 3rd grade. It was so successful because as you mentioned about your class, the class chemistry was right. When my students went to 4th and 5th grade, they performed very well and those teachers said it was because of the 2 years with me. They graduated last year and I cried like a baby at their promotion. I LOVED that whole group. That said, this year I taught 3rd grade but I will be moving down to 2nd grade next year. I was excited because I watch your videos all the time and I learn so much from you, and I was planning on copying so many of your 2nd grade ideas. But I guess I can still go back and look at this years videos. I will still watch your new videos and copy what I can. Congrats, though. I know you are going to have a great year.

I agree with you about iReady diagnostic. The only students that ever hit grade level are my TAG/GATE students, in my experience. I am so excited for you about looping with your students. I spent several years looping between 2nd and 3rd grades. It is amazing! For end of the year activities, we always make ice cream in baggies.

I wish I was looping with my kids, I'm not ready to say goodbye.

My son’s Kindergarten teacher looped up to first grade with the class. Those kids are STILL close and they are almost 30 years old. It was a fabulous experience for the class and the teacher. However, one student’s parents didn’t want him to loop up so he was put in a different class. It was so hard on him! I am thrilled for you and your students!

I'm moving from 2nd to 3rd this year. I've never taught 3rd, but I hear it's the sweet spot regarding independence interpersonal conflict/relationship drama. I requested to loop, but with only 1 full day and 3 half days left, I still haven't heard if admin will allow it. Best group of students and parents in 11 years.

I taught at a Montessori school, so my kids stayed with me for three years. The group would change a bit, since the oldest children would graduate and we would a new load of younger children, but about 2/3rd of my group stayed. I LOVE it! As you said: you get to know those students really well. Their talents, challenges, personalities, ... The dynamics are easier to recognise and tap into. I really do prefer having with me longer!

I am beginning my first year as a k-2 resource teacher next school year and one of the pros for me was that I would have my kindergarteners for a few years and really get to know them and their learning styles and nail those IEP goals. Even though most of your lessons will be more advanced than my d students levels, i am looking forward to what you share!

Congrats! I currently am a 3rd grade teacher and I will be sort of looping up to 4th next year. We switch for Literacy, Math, and Language Arts so I’ve worked with practically every 3rd grader this year in either Tier 1 or Tier 2 instruction. So moving up to 4th next year is sort of looping because I know all the kids. Looking forward to it. 4th is my absolute favorite grade!

Hi! I am so excited for you! Looping is THE BEST!!! I looped with an amazing class a few years ago, and our second year together was wonderful! You definitely save so much time at the beginning of the year. Already knowing your babies and their parents is HUGE! Also, I moved back to 3rd grade this past year, and I love it!! 3rd graders still love school and their teachers, but they are more independent. Wishing you lots of luck in this new edventure!

I'm finishing my first year as a PreK teacher for a daycare, kidding, we go all summer long with only one week off...but I am so tempted to return to school for the sake of teaching anywhere from 2-6th grades...I cannot explain my sanity, I have been so drained with my sanity all year because it's preschool and not real school even though it gave me tons of experience

Congratulations!! I am a third grade teacher in South Carolina and I wish I can move up with my kiddos as well, however, I am early childhood and can only teach pre-k-3. I absolutely love my class this year. Their personalities mesh together and they absolutely get along with each other in everything they do. I will miss them so much!!!

I teach 3rd ELA. I have looped. One year was Kindergarten to 1st and then at another school 1st to 2nd. It is great bc you know where they left you academically and you know behaviors and how to interact with them. What is hard is coming up with all new activities that you didn’t do with them. The 4th quarter is hard bc you’ve been with them for so long so it makes the EOY seem longer.

Everyone in my school loops! I have looped twice now. I love it, there are good and bad parts. but I love it lmao I am in the 2/3 loop and all my kids come from a k/1 loop. The last day of the loop is the saddest day of teaching lmao We do full class loops, so I keep the same kids. I also stay in the same classroom since the entire school loops. The kids know you, know what to expect, etc. You can basically get class going after a week or so. It's cool cause I love teaching second, but I love teaching third more. and 2nd and 3rd grade are hugggge developmental jumps imo...such fun ages... When I consider math standards tho, and strands, I feel like 1-2 loops and 3-4 loops make more sense.

I’m in 4th but I really want to go to third soon! That’s what I originally wanted but only found openings in 4th. But it’s easy to stay when you now what they need to do to get the good test scores and data.

I've taught 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th, but third grade is the BEST grade :) I miss teaching 3rd. Next year, I'll be back in 4th grade!

I am kind of looping this year too! I taught 1st grade last year (my first year) then this year I moved to a new school teaching 3/4. Our school is closing so I will be moving back to my first school teaching 3rd. About half of my class with be my first graders from my first year of teaching! 😭❤️

I'm looping with my kids this year. This is my 3rd time ever doing this. I looped 1st to 2nd, Kinder to 2nd (I missed their 1st grade year and jumped in during their 2nd grade year😁)... this year I'm looping Kinder to 1st!!!!🎉

My principal gave me about two days notice last summer that I was going to loop up with half of my last year’s third graders. I have been absolutely loving fourth grade this year! (My team is night and day better than the third grade team and I got to loop with the better behaved half of last year’s class, so it’s been a dream this year. There’s about two of them that I am absolutely ready to say goodbye to- we go all the way until June 16- but I’ll super miss the rest of my loopers!)

I have a friend who teaches at a provate school they are trying something with one class next year they are going to keep a group of students and teachers because there are a teacher and an assistant in every class in their school all the way through high school. They are going to start with this kindergarten class and keep them together until least 3rd grade maybe through 6th which is when they separate them between elementary and high school

I am moving to 3rd Grade next year and looping, also! I am nervous because I have been in 2nd grade for about 7 years.

So, one year I looped with a group of 4th graders to 5th grade, BUT I was departmentalized, so the students were mixed in with students whom I did not teach as 4th graders. Last year, again, had my 3rd graders as 5th graders, but again, I had 6 retainees and students from a different class whom I didn’t teach. So? Is that looping? A version of looping? Have fun packing! 🤭

I get to loop worth my 5th graders every year because I teach a combined 5th-6th class, and my second year with those students is always waaayyy better than the first year.

My mother taught 3rd grade for years and it was her favorite as well.
