For the first time since August 2017 following an 80,000,000£ restoration, Big Ben bongs its first midday chime as the bells return to full service with restoration work complete. This was also recorded on Remembrance Sunday.

It sounds much better after a good bell cleaning and a mechanism rebuild

It was supposed to resume chiming in 2021; I’m guessing the reason for the delay until 2022 had to do with Covid. I’m sure it did. And yes, it is good to hear Big Ben chiming again. :)

I also noted interestingly is that the timing of the hour strike kicks in after the Westminster chime. Usually there’s a 8 second wait before the strike until 2017’s restoration work and now in 2022 the timing is reduce from 8 seconds to 2 or 3 seconds before the hour strike after the Westminister Chime.

Ian Westworth had said in an interview that the goal was to get it looking and sounding as close to the 1860s as possible. This is what people heard in the streets 160 years ago. There’s a really cool recording from 1890 that exists and you can hear how short the pause is.
@Yasin_2312 Жыл бұрын
I actually prefer the 8 second wait because the sound echoes more, but I’m not complaining because I do hearing the chimes of Big Ben

I just went back again today and heard it striking 6 & 7pm and they finally managed to bring back the 8 second pause after the quarter bells chimes and right before Ben strikes the hour. At first when I heard that there were no 8 second pause, I was slightly worried that it might foil the New Years Eve celebrations since we’re all being given the 10 second countdown right before the fireworks shoot out from the eye and before Ben strikes, but nonetheless I’m very happy that the clockmakers are finally able to get the 8 second pause back again ❤❤❤

@@jerichoadiwarna9473 Nice! Nice! That way New Years Eve celebration would allow people to countdown to the new year before the strike! 😁

This song is amazing and I still love that they kept all of the original Victorian parts with a few modifications but for the most part I love clocks that have this chime on them. All thanks to England and Big Ben. The Chimes are amazing and you never would think a clock like this would be this iconic in 2022 Modern Day. 0:33

Yes, the quarterly Westminster Chime. I have a mantle clock with the quarterly Westminster Chime. It wasn’t until about 25 years ago I had figured out the purpose of the quarterly chime-the first 4 notes at 1/4 past the hour indicate the hour is 1/4 over, 8 notes at 1/2 past-the hour is 1/2 over, 12 notes at 3/4 past the hour (or 1/4 till the next hour), the hour is 3/4 gone, and finally on the hour all 16 notes(indicating that the last hour is 4/4 done), followed by the count of the (next) hour.

@@MrJamieMurph4141969 Yes I always think thats helpful so I know what time it is just based on the length of the chime. Its actually quite nice to listen to.

I'm gonna modify Tour London Loop in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to make Big Ben look like how it looks now, with the Prussian blue hands & numerals, the new corners of the clock, everything. It's a minor modification & the rest of the track will be the same, but still.

Question for those who live in London: how do you deal with the clock chimes at night? Does it wake you up?
@chillwithxavier64843 ай бұрын
Well it’s quite hard to live near Big Ben since the housing prices there are extremely expensive! But it’s pretty hard to hear Big Ben especially during the day due to all the traffic but at nighttime you could be able to hear it depending on how noisy it is but it’s honestly not that bad you get used to it
@ExplorerDS67893 ай бұрын
@chillwithxavier6484 that sounds pretty sad. Is housing any more expensive than California? A two bedroom house in LA runs you anywhere from 800k to 1m. Is it like that in London?
@chillwithxavier64843 ай бұрын
@@ExplorerDS6789 I used to live in California to hahaha and it really depends on the area if you wanna live in central London then yes apartments can go for straight up 1 million pounds! And honestly as someone who was born and raised in California yes it is like Los Angeles pretty much! But it all really depends on what area but yes I’d say they are quite similar to be honest with you!

@@ExplorerDS6789 it is said Big Ben can be heard up to 5 miles away I live 3 miles away from Big Ben so it’s really not that bad and I’m usually always wearing my AirPods so I never hear it unless I take them off during nighttime 😂
