I agree. The most hazardous thing in any national park is having the wife yell in my ear while I’m driving.

Went to a funeral of a childhood friend who lived here. Nice place to hike, canoe and met many of his friends. Great time.

You can get fairly inexpensive sat phones and digital communicators now. I recommend them for everyone traveling around Big Bend. I am a ham radio operator so I can use mobile radios too. I was disappointed about an exchange I had with a park ranger the last time I was there though about the subject of radios. I politely asked him what the park VHF frequencies were so I could call a ranger station in case of an emergency. He became very surly and snapped that those frequencies were not available to the general public and that they were scrambled and proprietary, etc. Fear has really changed attitudes in recent years. My suggestion to him would have been to use a different set of frequencies as well as their ‘secret’ ones which they could monitor so that ham operators like me could call in emergencies on behalf of themselves and others throughout the park. It just makes sense. They could use drone fleets as well. The guy calmed a bit and said that they used to monitor ham radio frequencies (I knew they did) but haven’t in several years. Why? There are ham radio VHF repeaters atop nearby mountain peaks that form a network. They could use them.

If you make sure to prepare and respect the wilderness, you'll be fine visiting the park. Love it more and more everytime I visit!

If a mountain lion attacks at night shine a bright flashlight in its eyes. I’m not an expert but I have a cousin who is a park ranger and gave me that tip.

Whether hiking or sight seeing the park is more remarkable each time.

After hearing a Javelina click his teeth at you, you may want to turn around.

Always take more water on a hike than you think you will need. A man died on the Grapevine Hills trail less than half a mile from his car. We did that hike to the balanced rock, maybe three miles round trip, and we consumed five bottles of water between us. It was a relatively mild fall day.

Your video is rediculous! It sound like a fedwr video aimed at 16 year olds who dont have driving abilities down yet. I am nearly 60 years old and have been to big bend on multiple occasions, so dont need your liberal chastising at all!
