A quick build of a bike shed in my garden with limited space. Large shed designed to have a green roof and pretty big at 4m long.

I need to build something very similar and your video has been immensely helpful, thank you. I think it looks great as well and although I am not planning a green roof I think it highly likely I will copy a lot of what you have done. Wish I had your daughters patience for painting also. Glad it was helpful Phil. If you’re not doing a green roof then you can use the same design but lighter construction. Save a few pennies!

A word of advice C-of my-S, try to keep the incidental music at the same volume as your commentary. This will then enable viewers to not have to constantly adjust the volume. Other than that, all is looking good. I like the idea of using recycled timber for your project, it saves money, saves trees and saves landfill.👍 The screwdriver tips are a curse, my son brakes at least three a day.

Good advice! For some reason I had a lot of trouble with music and voice volume on this edit. Lumafusion wouldn’t let me fade out and back in the music without nearly muting the background clip, very frustrating and I agree that the video suffers for it.

Difficult to remember now. Looking back I should have done a cost breakdown. More than £500, less than £800 is the best I can tell you. Sorry that’s probably not very useful. Treated timber was pretty expensive at the time.

This is great stuff. I was trying to find out how to make a DIY green roof and found your vid. I noticed you don't have a drain, in heavy rain, does the water just pool at the bottom of the slope?

So there is a drain. Difficult to tell in the video but I left a gap between the front facing board and the sloping base of the planter. Then I put down a strip of plastic sheet with holes in and backed that up with stones then the soil. The is now also a home made gutter which isn’t in the video. If you need any other tips, just ask, I’m no expert but it’s working well so far.

Hi. I will start to produce plans to go with my videos one day but I haven’t yet. I just don’t have the time to build, edit and then produce plans. I will give you rough dimensions though. It’s 160cm high, 400cm long and 80cm deep (not including the overhang of the planter) planter makes up 18cm of overall height. It’s obviously a little taller at the back to achieve the slope about 10cm. I hope this helps, sorry I don’t have more info to hand.

Thank you for a great video and a lovely design idea. Question: Can you share the specs for the screws (the box appears at 2:20 but the specs are never quite readable) which you use to hang the cross joists? It looks like they are structural but it is hard to say and I am not in the UK but rather Canada where we use US measurements for carpentry. I am also considering joist hangers but that seems maybe like overkill for this application, but screwing into the ends of boards parallel to the grain always makes me feel like I am doing something wrong.

Thanks for the question. I don’t remember the brand but I know I would have used impact driver wood screws 5mm x 70mm there is a brand here called “bullet” which are great. Most of the frame is clad and so the screws don’t see the elements so I felt a “coated” screw unnecessary. I’ve built a few out buildings this way and they’ve held up great. Joist hangars not needed although I did try to ensure most of the loads were supported by a timber on timber join and so there is very little sheer on the screws.

Nice one! What air compressor are you using? I'm currently thinking if I should buy one, I've narrowed it down to 2 oilless Hyundai, 6 and 24 litres and I'm not sure If I need 24 tbh. Never had one

Mines 24 and I’m really impressed. Very quiet when running. I’d say for a small workshop, 24 is a good choice but depends what you’re using it for really.

How deep did you make to accommodate the bikes?

About 800cm. It was a compromise between the width of my path and how many bikes I could get in. It will fit 2 adult bikes and 3 kids bikes no problem!

@@CaptainofmyShed absolutely. I have been let down with the council for help to flatten the grass for a scooter shed. I have it under a warn out bike tent.and i suffer great pain.tollift weights to keep it down .

Yeah all tantalized timber and marine grade ply.

do you have any drainage for that green roof?

Yes although I didn’t explain it very well in the video. Behind the front face of the planter is a gap allowing water to flow off the plastic sheeting covering the bottom of the bed, and into a very narrow gutter made from some fiberglass roof edging I trimmed down. It’s not perfect but it does work. I stacked stones inbetween the soil and the edge so the gap won’t get clogged with dirt.
