Just finished the Count of Monte Cristo. Excellent book all of 1243 pages long. A different experience being with a book for so long. I have read Shogun three times also. Best wishes and happy reading to you.

One of my favorite big books that I read recently was Les MIserables. I was so intimidated to start it but I loved it. The Count of Monte Cristo is on my 2024 tbr, but I think it will be Fall before I can get to it. This Summer for my big books, I plan to read Lonesome Dove and The Magic Mountain.

Ok, the book Lonesome Dove keeps coming up in videos I watch, I think it might be one I need to check out more closely. Good for you tackling Les Mis! I tried reading it once but out it down and didn’t pick it back up, one day maybe I’ll give it another go.

Welcome to Big Book Summer, Hope! I'm glad you joined the fun and that I've now discovered your channel! The Shadow of the Wind is a great book. Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favorite authors, but I still haven't read The Lacuna. Demon Copperhead is my new favorite of hers - SO good! I enjoyed The Handmaid's Tale and another novel by Margaret Atwood, but I would like to read a lot more. I listened to (and enjoyed) Songbirds and Snakes on audio for Big Book Summer a few years ago. The Goldfinch is another good one! The Passage was one of the books that first gave me the idea for Big Book Summer, in 2011! And, yes, it is the first in an excellent trilogy. I've never heard of Samantha Shannon, but those are gorgeous covers! I read The Count of Monte Cristo a few years ago for BBS and really enjoyed it. It reads faster than it loooks because there is lots of suspense & it's fast-paced. And, yes, it's a revenge story! Glad you decided to join the BBS fun! That's a great stack of books. Be sure to add your link to the links list on the challenge page on my blog (linked in the notes on any of my summer videos) - - that will help others find your channel, plus I'll share it on social media, AND you'll be entered in the end of summer giveaway drawing! You can also join the Goodreads group if you want to, to share your video link, see what everyone else is reading, and enjoy some Big Book chat all summer!

The Count of Monte Cristo is worming it's way ever higher in my mind's TBR but.. So big 😅

It did the same for me, just kept creeping its way up the TBR, it’s feeling more and more like the time for it to be read is very soon. Every time I look at it I think I want to read you, but maybe this still long book that’s only 800 pages is the better choice. 😏 I have yet to hear anyone say it isn’t worth it though, people love it which makes me excited to get to it soon. Hopefully you will too!

Great choice of books. You've inspired me. I'm already reading The Bee Sting, but want to do Marriage Portrait and a few more. Good luck!

Hi Hope! I just found your channel! The Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorite books! I read it in 2022 and want to read the rest of the series this year. I just purchased the Count of Monte Cristo to read this summer. I don't know if you are familiar with the book tuber Benjamin McEvoy but he has amazing content about classic literature (he's an Oxford grad) and he does wonderful videos on reading big classics (best translations, reading plans etc). You should check out his video on The Count of Monte Cristo. It's wonderful! I'm glad I found your channel! I'm a new subscriber! Have a great day!

I love Shadow of the Wind, too! I don't know anyone else who has read it. It's a really good book, although it took me a while to get into it. Once I saw the parallel narratives, I couldn't wait to read some more. I bought the second book, The Angel's Game, in March but haven't started it yet. I also follow Benjamin McEvoy. His insight into classics is enlightening.

Thank you for mentioning Kingsolver's "The Lacuna". I am intrigued with the artist/political climate that she depicts. Looking forward to reading this one 🙂

So glad I found your channel. Love your book choices. You'll get through the Count of Monte Cristo in no time and will be happier for it. My son asked me how I read such big books. I told him the same way he reads short books, one page at a time. Currently reading World Without End by Ken Follett. I get so involved with the characters, I have a difficult time stopping myself.

I love the World Without End series, such incredible characters, writing, and story telling. Hopefully my experience with Monte Cristo will be the same. Glad you found my little channel!!

I am also reading The Count of Monte Cristo! I started it many years ago, but stopped because I had numerous library books to read. Now is the time to finish! Someone on Goodreads mentioned they had started a very long book January 1 and was reading 6 pages a day and it is working for them. I’m doing a version of this for this book. I’m reading 10 pages a day, so if I get a day or two behind, it won’t take much to catch up! This might work for you in some form. This book is a revenge novel, but also very adventurous and the characters are wonderful!

That’s actually a really great idea! I was thinking about just setting a a three day reading challenge for myself or something, but your way seems a little more sensible. Well, here’s to hoping we both love the book. With that amount of time required the payoff had better be worth it!
