Big Boy No. 4018 moves to it's new home at the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco, Texas.

4014 will be up and running in just a couple more years. She's at home in the UP steam shop in Cheyenne undergoing restoration work now.

Great to see that big boy locomotive 4018 was moved to a new home from Dallas to Frisco, TX , I heard that UP big boy 4018 and some other railroad equipment also moved to Frisco, TX to be displayed at a new railroad museum back in 2013.

These machines do not belong in a museum any more than elephants belong in zoos. Hell, I’d be willing to donate $$ to help keep them running.

@@backonpro5679 I agree I could have made that clearer. I was referring to the ones like 4014 that have been removed from a “museum”, restored, and are now running again. A museum is better than nothing but actually seeing them fired up blowing steam and on the tracks again is something to behold. I don’t think anyone would want to see 4014 go back on static display and rot. Same with the others that are still in use. I never considered myself a train nut as I’m more of an airplane enthusiast. But, damn…. Who wouldn’t be moved seeing 4014 speeding by? Similar feeling I get when I see a P51 make a low pass.

Not that I'm aware of gabe. I've heard nothing about that. As far as I know, UP only had interest in 1 Big Boy unit and 4014 was the best candidate to restore.

Chances of a second "Big Boy" seeing operational restoration are essentially 0%. 7 of the 25 "Big Boy" locomotives built have been preserved - 6 (including 4018) on static display and 4014 in operational condition. Of the 7 Class I railroads in North America, 6 (BNSF, NS, CSX, CN, CP, & KC) plus Amtrak do not allow mainline excursions. Indeed, the attitude of most is openly hostile towards them. UP is the lone railroad still operating excursions and they already have 4014. If any railroads wanted to bring back mainline steam, there are plenty of operational examples at the ready (Sou 4501 & 630, N&W 611, and NKP 765 just to name 4).

I only disliked because I hate that it was put on display on not back into service 😕. Not because the video was bad cuz it wasn’t.

I'm sure you already know this, but it's sister unit #4014 is back in service thanks to Union Pacific's steam program. I saw it on the rails a few months ago and it is WELL worth the time if you ever get to see it.

big was not the largest. sorry to blow your bubble but the PRR S1 was the largest Steam produced. big boy is the biggest to this date but not the biggest in history
