Steven Rinella heads to Wisconsin to spend a few days on his buddy’s historical family farm to hunt small game and whitetails in the famed Driftless area. There's plenty of action and wild game meals like Butterfly Venison Steaks and rabbit stew. Check out the MeatEater Podcast for more from Steve and the MeatEater Crew. It’s interesting how hunting philosophies manifest differently. My grandfather always taught us that if guys at camp were busting their butts, driving deer to you, being picky was not an option. You were to shoot.
@509Gman

Different goals. Doug is managing for big bucks. Your grandfather was trying to fill bellies (I’m guessing this was during/after the Depression and WWII, when seeing a deer was like seeing a snow leopard in the wild?)

Not really, it was more about respect for the guys crawling through the briers and brush trying to get you a deer. I once passed a scrubby 6ish point on a drive. It was frowned on, haha. I’m not saying either way is right or wrong, it’s just interesting, that’s all.

The rabbit hunting strategy is making me wanna give up my solitary hunting and phone a friend. Only problem I can see is that the snowshoe hares up here will stay stock still til you pass by then run out behind you, not sure a square formation would necessarily work on them. Need like a “V” so the guy behind can see em run. Good thing is you can still hunt them pretty well if you like working your eyes. It’s been five years that I’ve been focusing on it and I’m just now getting to where I can see one or two before they bolt (also helps that they change colors based on day length. They’re turning white now, but global warming has delayed the first snows into November around here).

Y sii!!

Saludos y buena caza.
