My friends wife taught full time for decades - eventually similar thing happened, they got wealthy enough she didn't have to work full time anymore - so she just did substituting because she still enjoyed teaching - the problem then became she was substituting all the time to the point it was nearly full time anyway - at that point she quit.

It’s a complicated problem. The politicians from both parties are ruining education. The kids play on their phones and will cause trouble if you ban them. They can’t read. We teach to “outcomes” tests instead of using a grade for the Outcome. Salaries and morale are low. I retire in 4 years, God willing.🎉

My wife decided to pull the pin in March 2021 and retire. I was very happy to have her at home, I was still working from home, but it was great having her here. In late October she suddenly passed away. She didn’t get much of a retirement. I was numb, I threw in the towel on my job, I ran my own business. The 8 months we had were the best we shared together. It’s a good feeling having the person you love at home with you. I’ve heard some horror stories about couples who go at each other like cats and dogs in a pissing match because they’re not used to being together 24/7. Always be thankful you have someone you love and vice versa, because that person could be gone without warning faster than you can blink your eyes. It was great while it lasted, zero regrets.

Best class I ever had in college was called "pre-teaching". Before I started taking teaching classes they said at the end of our college year, go back to our home town and sit in on a class for a week at the level we thought that we wanted to teach at. So I arranged to sit in on a high school class for a week as an observer. Middle of the first morning I was sitting there and realized "my God, what was I thinking!" Went back to college that fall and changed majors and career track. Best class I ever had. 😂

Issue is desruction of social safety net, idea that paying taxes is bad and classism that puts private schools above common good. Lots of issues but teachers themselves are still part of the problem since they don't vote or take much action towards a better society.

indeed, funny thing is since the first I saw her, working on their fixer up yacht years ago; I knew she had to have been a teacher. And not just that, but from her ability to explain and kind mannerism; she was highly likely that one teacher the kids at her school universally regarded as their favourite. Some people are just born to teach. It actually made me nostalgic for my childhood as I had a teacher just like that in year 7.

When I do 80 or 90, not that often mind you, she doesn't complain, I maintain her regular oil changes etc, I do mainly highway driving, she's never left me stranded, always starts right up, I've driven her in ice snow storms, even through the remnants of hurricane Ida a couple of years ago when I didn't think it was as bad as it was, I drove through some pretty badly flooded local roads, I turned around to head back home here in central Jersey, one place in particular the water was so deep that I was sure I was going to start floating or at least stall out but nope, I made it through and back home safely, this was all at night, I'll admit I was a bit scared. The next day the sun was out and I headed to where I was trying to go the night before, there were abandoned cars all over the shoulder of 287.If I have one complaint it's the dashboard, GM dropped the ball on that part.

I’ve owned 26 vehicles over my 47 years of driving. In my opinion most cars and pickup trucks made between ~ 1995 to 2010 hit a nice combination of durability longevity without being larded up with difficult and expensive technology. By now we know which of these modern era cars to avoid. If you have a decent enough car from this modern golden era, I always advise people to just keep repairing them and increase the frequency of maintenance as they age. My current fleet includes a 1998 Continental that has been very reliable now with 178k miles, a 2002 Continental with 156k miles, a 2004 Avalanche with 262k miles, and a 2006 Town Car with 142k miles. Outside of regular oil changes every 2,500 miles, trans service every 25k miles, differential service every 75k miles, I’ve mostly had just a few random repairs for an alternator, water pump, master cylinder etc. I did put a transmission in the Avalanche that I use for trailering, and I learned to avoid the discount transmission shops - because that first replacement trans didn’t last. Then I used a GM CERTA remanufactured trans that has now gone more than 100k miles and works great. New cars and trucks are no longer affordable at $50-$80k. Even if I wanted one, I could never justify those crazy car payments.

Congratulations Mrs. Wizard! Very happy for you. And Wizard, I agree that new car prices are absolutely nuts. I think that within a decade we're going to see the used car market go even crazier with new cars being difficult and expensive to repair and electric cars going to the scrap bin once their batteries wear out. I might even be able to sell my little fleet in order to retire.

You got lucky, really lucky. The 3800 series II from 1995 through the 2005 model year typically burned through intake manifolds every 60,000 miles or so. Unlike the 3100/3400/4300 series it wasn't just the gasket that failed, but the entire upper intake plenum. GM thought it was a good idea to run a piping hot metal EGR tube through the plastic manifold. Failure was guaranteed from the factory. If not caught and repaired quickly enough the coolant the failure dumped into the engine oil would quickly destroy the engine. Often the failure was rapid and there would be no sign of an issue until the engine seized.

Mine is going into the shop for a power steering leak, had a new radiator put in. Yeah, it's pricey but the ride is sooooo nice........ This looks a lot like mine; glad to know it's worth it to keep it running.

I could not imagine being a teacher today. Not just the culture wars, but the low pay, long hours, helicopter parents, administrators, worrying about what is said and how etc etc etc. If Mrs. Wizard wants to keep her hand in the actual teaching aspect, should could always part time at one of the many Tutoring centers that are out there.

the LZ9 motor that came with those is actually a really cool motor, came from the GM "High-Value" engine lineup, along with the 3.5L (same block smaller bore). both of these are similar to the 2.8 and the like, as wizard said, but with the bore offset a bit to fit the larger hole. Best thing about these motors is the low end torque, worst thing is the displacement on demand after '07. 100% worth fixing.

Not sure on DOD on the Buick in the video. BUT 2007-2008 Impalas with 3900 had DOD. 2006 did not, and they dropped DOD in 2009 on the Impalas. 3900 was a TERRIFIC engine with the exception of oil leaks. They leak oil from everywhere. The one in the video is pretty dry, with the exception of oil running down the starter. 4t65e was also not the greatest transmission.
@SaxaphoneMan42
@SaxaphoneMan42 Жыл бұрын
@@mph5896 yeah tbh I can't name a good fwd transmission from GM, AFAIK they don't exist. I've also heard some people had issues with leaks on those 3900s, but I've also seen ones that haven't had much more than a little seepage after 100k+. Kinda like the 10 bolt 8.5" rear end on GM half tons, some people have them chewed up in a matter of months, others never have any issues with them.

@@SaxaphoneMan42 Yeah, that one in the video is quite dry. My brother has an 11 Impala 3900. The thing is literally leaking oil hard from every gasket. I'll have to break it down to a short block for a reseal at some time or another.

My 2007 Lucerne is the best highway cruiser I've ever owned (glad it DOES have the 3800 Series III V6). I've had to put quite a bit of money (about $1000) into it and it still needs a couple of things done to it, but overall it's a really sweet car. And *knock on wood* the hood strut on mine still works (or maybe the previous owner replaced it).
@EBIndy
@EBIndy Жыл бұрын
meh hood struts are not expensive. There's real things to complain about on a car. Old hood struts aren't one of them. The 3800 Lucernes are hands down the best and a really good value car. Just make sure the transmission has its fluid changed as those FWD 4 speeds are not tolerant of neglect.
@digitalrailroader
@digitalrailroader 7 ай бұрын
@@EBIndy like I mentioned in my own comment, you can still get the hood strut brand new from GM for $68-$70 (GM Part 15799782) it was also used on the Lucerne's platform mate the Cadillac DTS. and all I've had to do to my 2006's Series III is an Alternator, Thermostat, the Coolant Elbows, and the Water Pump! as for the rest of the car, i had to replace the BCM harness (a corroded off pin in one of the connectors caused my rear door locks to not unlock) a third of the speakers in the audio system (the front door speakers started to come apart due to age, and one of the rear speakers from physical damage to the connector on the speaker itself) and replace the taillights, rear deck lid, rear impact bar, and energy absorber from a rear end collision (not my fault; person was following too close and I had to brake hard to not rear end the person in front of me)

I bought a 2022 Toyota last year and I've been pretty disappointed by it. The interior rattles like a 2008 GMC Savanna cargo van and I already had it freak out and throw every single code at me for something that would not phase an older car. I regret trading in my perfectly functioning 2014 Mazda. It's bad enough that I'm considering selling it while its value is still high but I really don't know what else would be worth replacing it with except for a well cared for mid-2010s car.
