What are Oligonucleotides? How is ‘oligonucleotides’ pronounced? How are oligonucleotides synthesised? What are the uses and benefits of oligonucleotides in the pharmaceutical industry? We will be answering all of these questions and more in our first episode of ‘Big Concepts in Brief’.
Helping us demystify this Big Concept is Claire MacLeod, a Grand Challenge Lead at CPI’s Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre in Glasgow City Region, Scotland.
These synthesised short strands of RNA or DNA have the potential to revolutionise medicine and the pharmaceutical industry. They operate at the most basic level within our cells - our genes. Once delivered into our bodies, they target highly specific genetic sequences to modify the production of proteins that cause various diseases.
This next-generation drug modality has the potential to treat a wide range of diseases like Alzheimer’s, spinal muscular atrophy, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. At CPI, we’re leading the research and development effort with our partners to make oligonucleotide medicines a viable, cost-effective and sustainable therapy for large patient populations.
Let us know what you think of this innovation and any other concepts you would like explained in this series in the comment section below.

Thank you for this simple explanation, I am studying genomics and computational biology and required a brief introduction to this concept and its usage in MiniSeq Illumina sequencing. This helped a lot, thank you 😊
