J, you taught me how to solve my first ever 2x2 at age 44, I’ve caught the bug and I’ve solved everything using the beginner method up to 9x9 and all the puzzles I could find like the megaminx, mirror windmill ect. You have given me an immense sense of pride as I’ve always wanted to know how to solve the Rubik’s cube but lacked confidence in my abilities. I think as cubes get bigger, centres take exponentially longer compared to edges, so you want more efficient centre solutions, which is why Yau is not as good (Edit: commented before you said this in the vid). Since Hoya and Redux have basically the same efficiency for centres, you would consider the edges - the first four edges for Hoya might be a bit less efficient, but the last eight are more than made up for with the look-ahead and lack of rotations, so I think Hoya is better than Redux. Yau is definitely best for 4x4, Hoya for 6x6 and upwards. 5x5 imo is the crossover point for which method is the best, and honestly I don't think it matters, I think both have the potential to break records. I use Yau for 4, and Hoya for 5+ :D

I'm so happy that you've brought Hoya into the light!!! It's awesome for 5x5-7x7. I've been using it for years and it's very under developed and the resources are slim to none these days. There are MANY tricks and ways to pair up pieces and when you're CN with it there's much better options to take advantage of good centres and edges that are already paired up. People have always been giving me weird looks when I tell them that's what I use....

I've been maining Hoya as a big cube method from 5x5 and above (and yes, even 10x10 😂), and I can honestly say that I've really been enjoying it, it's definitely underrated as a method and definitely should have more recognition. Really happy that JPerm finally has covered Hoya in a video ♥️ *HOYA FTW!*

Everyone should try Hoya at least once, I think it is the most fun method of those three

Hey, I hope you are happy ;) I translated not only your description, no, also you subtitles to German for a freaking 14 minutes long video!! It took me around 6 hours! Btw, its currently 3 am German time and I started at around 21:50. Call me weird if you want or whatever idc. But I hope that it could help someone!

Hey I’m pretty good at Hoya so I feel like I have the obligation to share my opinion on the internet. Yau is best on 4x4, no doubt, I still use Yau on 4x4. 5 and up, Hoya. I would love to explain my reasoning in-depth with you but I’ll cover a few main points in this comment. During Hoya cross edges you can turn fast, really fast. Because you don’t have to complete one edge at a time and can instead do which ever edge piece is easiest. This makes look ahead ridiculously easy. Good Hoya solvers also don’t need to look at the bottom of the cube while solving cross edges, this is just something that eventually comes. I think is this video you were understating the power of Hoya’s cross edge stage. In this simile (for cross edges) Yau is like roux, low move count but slow turning and Hoya is like CFOP higher move count but faster turning. Hoya has many untapped efficiency’s which stretch far beyond Rw U’ Rw’ inserts. Which means Hoya (hopefully sometime in the near future) won’t have any draw backs in move count compared to reduction. Also sorry but your solutions were terrible, which is ok because you don’t use Hoya. Here are things I would have done differently it your cases. 5:50 before doing the D’ to reposition the cross to where the green edge needs to go you can do U2 Rw U Rw’ to ‘pair’ the pieces together then do D’ and insert. Even if you had already done the D move it’s better to do that case LUgen because it’s just faster than fancy slice moves. 6:15 what you did wasn’t bad but... F2 3R U’ 3R’. 6:41 ok admittedly I wouldn’t see this one in an actual solve but it’s still so good (regrip right thumb to bottom) B’ Rw U Lw’ U Lw Rw’ B (untapped efficiency!!!). What I probably would have done is L U’ L’ U2 Rw U Rw’ (cause I’m righty dominate) U2 M F2 M’. 7:15 what are you doing. U2 Rw U’ Rw’. Hope I didn’t miss anything. Please ask questions people of cubing KZfaq I would love to answer. WCAID: 2015HIGH01. main event is 5x5 (ignore 7x7 I haven’t done that in a comp for awhile)

Hey J perm! Could you do a interm./adv center building video? Been trying to find a source explaining all patterns etc. Your 'get faster' vid covers a lot of that for L2C but not as much for first 4 Either way, love the big cube content 🙌🙌🙌🙌

I switched to Hoya several years ago on all big cubes since I just couldn't get my head around the three cross pieces on the left. I guess I got too used to cross on bottom. Last four centers was also frustrating to learn especially on 5+. Hoya starts with four centers instead, so I really only had to learn solving two centers. That said, this video made me rethink my skills. I had learned an entirely different method for 4x4 at this point (a slight variation on LEOR), yet I didn't realize that the first block would be very similar to the Yau cross. I'd say that now, I get similar times with Yau and Hoya. Thank you for giving me the chance to reevaluate my level.

Personally i think that Hoya is the easiest to get good with, if you have never used a big cube before. Because for me edge parring on big cubes was always hard so Hoya made it more intuitive

When i was learning 4x4 on yau, i went to my first comp and i managed to borrow someone’s big cubes and the method i ‘tried’ to solve with them was yau (i had no idea what redux was since yau was the method in your 4x4 tutorial xD)

I use Hoya because it makes centers more efficient which is more important for me on big cubes, plus I can be more color neutral on my F2Cs.

Thanks! I broke my 5x5 PB twice today (was 3:15.something from Cubing at Home), and practiced all day big cubes. Only 4x4 and 5x5, no 3x3 (well, maybe some)

I had an idea for a 5x5 method: "CCFEOP" Centers, Cross, First 4 Layers (F4L), Edges of the Last Layer (ELL), OLL, PLL. Basically, make the centers, make the cross on the bottom, make and insert the E Layer Edges with thier corners like F2L, pair up the last layer edges, then do 3x3 OLL and PLL. I like it because instead of just reducing it to a 3x3, you solve it specifically like a 5x5 and work more with the more unique types of pieces.

I like Hoya for 4x4+. I have bad 6x6 and 7x7's so I don't use them much. Though my 4x4 and 5x5 is decent. Still learning though. Hoya doesn't have a lot of tutorials and tips on KZfaq. So it's harder to learn.

When I do 6x6 and 7x7, I solve the centers first, but instead of building random edges, I make my cross edges first so I don’t have to worry about looking at the bottom layers. So, I do reduction then Yau.

I just about died at the “HOYAA” at the beginning😂 nice video though I was looking for something like this and finally came a cross. Before this i used to do like a mix of reduction and Hoya but this helped. I now solve with Yau and my times are improving. Thanks J Perm!

I always thought I used reduction method but now I saw this video and I realized I have been using yau since the start

I use Hoya for 4x4 it is so easy and straight forward for me but there are pros and cons to the other ones and that is completely fine to me if you choose Yau or Redux :)

As for me,when I first learned to solve a 4x4 using redux,I averaged 3 minutes. After I learned Yau(from jperm ofcourse) My times went down pretty much and now I average around 2minutes. So clearly ,Yau is way better for me

Dylan, what do you use to label stickers when you're looking through a skeleton in FMC? I have been using post-it notes, but they come off sometimes when i'm turning the cube and lose their stickiness very quickly. They seem to stay put in your videos. Sorry for asking a question not really related to your video, just wanted to put it on your latest so you can see it.

How about doing centers first and then solving cross edges on 4x4? You get all the look ahead benefits from both the methods and can do 3-2-3 with the cross already solved for the 3x3 stage. I feel like the inefficient centers in yau dont make it worth it, especially since this alternate version of redux I mentioned has almost the same benefits, except for the slightly faster cross edges in yau, but for me at least it isnt worth it, since its so hard. Plus, even on yau you still have to find the cross edges anywhere in the cube, and that can be really slow unless you start to plan them in inspection, which would be really hard.

I use a hybrid yau for 7x7. I do solve the 4 edges of the cross but I keep 2 on 1 side and 2 on the other side so I have two available front turns for better speed. Then before I slice edge pair I move the 2 solved edges into the correct cross pieces. It's a really good strat. Got sub 10 with edge parity with this strat on 7x7. I'd still consider myself a noob with big cubes but this strat has gotten me PB after PB.

I am 46 and just learned how to solve the 3x3 during a boring sick leave. It took me a week, writing down steps and algorithms. I then taught my 8 yo son and I got a crash course on brain anatomy. I told him the moves, he memorised them, practice and done in one day. Question “ do you have the moron method” for the 4x4 which I just purchased? 😭😭😭
