The small parting tool is the right one for a mini lathe. You can set the tool upside down to center hight and reverse the spindle speed …… this will give a much quiter and stable run.

Try a ground insert that has a sharper edge and a positive rake. Keep the chips clearing, coolant flowing and a constant surface speed. Improving the rigidity will certainly help, bench lathes are quite capable.

Try to flip upside down the parting tool and reverse the spindle rotation... Keep the center line and see the big difference...

Concider going slower. It will require more torque. Faster as you get closer to the center as the surface speed gets slower and slower. That's why you had better luck at the end then at the beginning.

+1 for the bandsaw. :D dont destroy the lathe ;)

I have a similar lathe, I run an ISCAR blade with kyocera inserts on steel. Definitely wants a lot of lube in the cut and on larger than about 50mm its a fine balance between feeding hard enough and stalling the motor but the blade loves to be fed hard.

BTW I have 3mm wide inserts. I have wondered about getting thinner inserts and blade for larger diameters.

@@carneeki let me know if you find inserts below 3mm :) Do you have a link to your parting tool? Can't find it.

@@MaximKachurovskiy I'll take a photo (and email) of it when I'm next in the workshop (maybe Friday, Australia time). The code for the insert (from memory) is TKN3 but the also go as thin as TKN1.6 TKR might also be useful because the right corner leads ahead by 8deg so the part conning of the lathe won't have the little tip attached, and the part in the chuck is easily faced clean. I've had it for about 18 months and still on my first insert which was used when I got it!

Much better than expectet. Parting off with my lathe (same than yours) has much improved since I have upgraded to 1hp 3 phase motor with inverter. Cut of wants feed, and feed needs torque. Btw. Nano Els runs on breadboard with controler and display already. Close loop stepper, and encoder have been shipped....can't wait to get them :-)

Yeah, one day I'll collect enough courage to ask my wife for permission to buy a new lathe motor 😄

I use a tool with 1.5mm parting inserts in my small lathe, helps a lot when you are limited by torque and rigidity.

Nice! Can you share the tool product name so that we could find it online?

@@MaximKachurovskiy Maifix MGEHL1010-1.5 It's a cheap import tool but it seems to work well, better than my HSS parting tool.

@@MaximKachurovskiy You can search for MGEHR2525 Longer on AliE but it's not going to support 1.5mm inserts, more like 4-5mm which is going to push the bench lathe to its limits. HSS cobalt, slowly extend the blade and go slow, or as you said use the bandsaw :P

@@HM-Projects 25mm exist for 1.5 mm insert, its a lot more tough for the extra height under the insert. but you have to cut and mill the shank to fit your lathe. My small lathe is a 12*36 inch 2hp. and its working just fine.

Motor stalling like that will break the insert. Another option is a well ground hss cobalt parting blade that's 2-3mm thick at slower speeds.

Well, it stalled 10 times and no inserts broken 🙄 Looks like the rigidity of the tool holder is saving me. I have some HSS but I shrink the thought of dealing with it 😂
