On Sunday, September 19, 2011, Don Garlits joined Dave Despain on the set of "WindTunnel" to discuss the current status of the NHRA.

I met Bid Daddy Don Garlits at the Winston dragway in Georgia about 16 years ago and my 9 year old son Frank got him to sign both his Don Garlits tee shirt, and his Don Garlits cap! And he also got Shirley Muldowneys too! Don chatted with us for a good 20 minutes and was so nice to my son and I! Thanks Don!!!!! God bless!!!!!

I seen them both in Norwalk Ohio in/around 1980. Awesome to talk to them both.

Don Garlits is Right as usual ! Smaller fuel pumps and tires would do it and go back to 1320 !

I have been a fan of drag racing for 43 years, Of course, that would mean I've been a fan of Don Garlits for 43 years as well. He is so on the money about slowing the cars down to stop hurting parts and let some of the underfunded teams stand a shot to even qualify for an event. When they shortened the track to 1000 feet for nitro, it threw me all off. I used to be able to tell you held each E.T. and speed record in each pro class. Now, I have no idea. Slow them down and bring back 1320.

I agree with what Don Garlits says, keep to speeds at a maximum of 300 MPH and return to quarter mile racing. The engines in both Top Fuel & nitro Funny Car should run smaller superchargers and smaller fuel pumps to reduce speeds and improve reliability . Consistent, competitive side by racing is what fans want!

I know you wrote that 10 months ago, but you are totally correct. Garlits has more sense in his half a foot than the leaders of NHRA have in their half a brain.

ithink the NHRA needed toban the larger blowers on the top fuel and funny cars and restrict the injector pumps id say the 19 gallon per hour pumps will be mandated as well band the newer style injector hats as well too and restrict the nitro percentage to say 85 or less as this will help the teams to lessen parts breakages and make the racing mor fun for rookies like me in funny cars as im saying based on my nostalgia experience I knew this will be easy done the fuel pump size will be restricted same said of the injection hats as well too as this will be maing the sport a lot safer in the longer term keep the speeds under 300mph and the racing will be a lot safer in the longer term id say ban the use of 14;71 blowers and ban set back blowers as well too peg the cars back by using 2spd trans same thing in funny cars as well too as I knewwhen I start racing this will be good if my views as being used by the NHRA will be good if my suggestions will be part of the rules in top fuel and nitro funny cars as im a future racer id like to see these rules be in force for these nitr dragsters and funny cars we needed to slow these cars down as we can do it as lives of the drivers will count on this be done ban the big 14/71 blowers in these classes in nitro funny car and top fuel dragsters and restrict the size of the injection hats as well too as I see this will be good for these classes as the costs will fall if we have these rules in place before somebody get killed if we don't slow these cars down as we needed to get these cars slowed down before somebody gets killed and restrict the nitro load to id say 85 and lower percentages this will help stop horrendous fires and parts breakages and improve driver safety in the longer run this will be good if these stricter rules on blower and injector hat was restricted to the older enderle mad injection hats that's was for the id say 6/71 blowers this will be the supercharger size this will be mandated by the NHRA this will be a good level playing field for the racers and everybody as well too as I see my views will be heeded like big daddy garlis was saying this have to happen the cars needed tobe slowed down to make racing a lot safer in the future do enforce the rules really tightly to kee the car from gettin any faster as well check the cars before the new season to see they are following the rules in the regards to the blower size and the size of the injection pumps and injection hat size as well too I see this will be good for drag racing and make the sport a lot safer for the rookie teams thiswas based on my experience in the nostalgia funny car these rules are really good as the racing was a lot more fun after certain rules was put in for the nostalgia funny cars in by the NHRA and ANDRA these rules was the reason nostalgia funny car thrived this was my views in this stuff on race car safety as im saying this was the right way I see it that way guys

Why don't they see the wisdom in his proposal.....use aero to limit the top speeds and have run what you bring singles for bragging /record breaking at annual events.....like a bonneville type event...

idea.. festival of speed single car. with no limits.... 1/4 mile... endles thoughts... lets see a 380 mph no competiitve pass for exibition. all nitro .... Id like the vid.....

two words, Sammy Miller :) He was awesome when he drove his rocket cars. NHRA wanted nothing to do with the rockets.

NHRA is rapidly going broke Englishtown NJ has ended drag racing entirely for 2018

God forbid that NHRA would listen to a man who invented the rear engine dragster,has been in the sport for 60+years(a guy like that can,t know any thing about drag racing,ya right).Cars are going 330+mph in the 1/4 run,to dangerous,they shorten the track to 1000Feet,great for safety,today in the 1000FT,they are going 325-335MPH,so you have not proven any thing,your still at the same speed before the 1000FT rule,the only thing that comes from this is you need better braking system,4 wheel brakes like a funny car,to help stop them with the chutes.
