@sabot4ge
@sabot4ge Ай бұрын
@@jasongibbs3713 He was only 26-28 at the time in 1994. But...gangster rap took over bro. He didn't fit in. KRS was able to survive the 90's because he had a diverse fanbase and performed overseas. But BDK came from the 80's era where you just rapped. But when the 90's kicked in, and that mafioso street rap became popular, he didn't fit in. Slick Rick came out with an album in 1998 and it did pretty well. He didn't rap gangster...he had features from nas, outkast, etc. It went gold at least. But those guys had a hard time in the 90's because they were getting into their 30's and their understanding of hiphop was from its beginning. They didn't understand the gangster rap thing...but because a bunch of 19 year olds were selling millions of records being 'gangsters', these grown men who were almost 30 were expected to fit that criteria. Same thing with Rakim. He came out with an album in 97' and 99'. They didn't do well because he didn't compromise his image. It took for THIS TIME..this era..2024..for people to really appreciate them. But hiphop was 20 years old at that time, so it was still forming and developing. But the greats from the 80's are able to do shows every year...and live off music NOWADAYS. in the 90's, it was tough for them. But thank god people who grew older with them are supporting them financially. Rock music was about 40 years old at the time, so it had time to develop and a generation of fans grew older with their favorite artists. Plus, rock fans are generally more appreciative of the past artists because in that culture, you're a cornball if you don't know the classics. But rap was literally 19-20 years old by time 1994 kicked in, and the fans who were adults in the 80's, moved on with their life by 1994 and probably stopped listening to hiphop. It was like teenager's music or a young person's music. Now that hiphop is 50 years old, it's no longer just a young person's game. A person can be 50-60 and listen to Big Daddy Kane...an 18 year old could listen to NBA Youngboy. Kane was a victim of being at the right place at the wrong time.

You see Kane said labels weren't talking to him and you know Death Row East were probably about to start signing legendary NYC artist who weren't able to get record deals to Death Row East. Death Row would've totally taken over the rap game and the East vs West probably would've ended. Biggie was already leaving Bad Boy Records start his own label which meant Puff would've been screwed.

He also was bold enough to give an ear to a possible bitnus move, without feeling no type of threat from Suge. And, Suge saw him at one point of the meeting as the Hip Hop legend that he is, but on the same token tried to put his service like a loan shark to this legend. Kane was smooth on turning it down, plus recognizing(by his dog encounter)that Suge was trying a scared tactic with that whole situation.🤷🏾‍♂️

I seen him in concert at his age right now .. he still has it and he’s one of those people that don’t need to play those label games he should stay independent and build his brand back up

Sign him to do what, that shit was already flooded even when he came in the game, that’s why he was so dope at that time, the competition was way better than the bad boy Death row era

Why didn’t the Tupac estate ever put out the “Wherever You Are” collab with Tupac & Big Daddy Kane? All that was missing was a hook + a production update.

One of the coolest dudes and greatest MC'S ever and maybe the best hip hop lyricist for other rappers ever. You were spot on to not take that " pocket money" from Suge. If you accepted that money, who knows what that would have cost you.

The transition was crazy for a lot of rappers in the early 90’s. It was sort of like the scene in the WIZ when the colors would change rapidly. It was red two seconds ago and now green is the hot color. So people like Kane that were hot in 88-89 were considered played out in 93. Crazy times back then.

Pac was the one on Suges ear about reaching to the older rap kats from New York because of how they were being neglected on the East coast. He was always damant about feeling they deserved more respect.
