Big Excavator Ran 2 Years Ago, Should Start Right Up! (Probably)

I got this American 25 excavator running two years ago, so I expected that the Detroit Diesel 6V53 that powers it would start right up. I also checked the injector rack first to make sure it wouldn't run away on me. I didn't get either of those things right...

The 6V53 is a great engine but yes, you do have to make absolutely sure that the rack is free BEFORE starting. No amount of fuel shut off will stop a screaming jimmy when it's running away, you need to block the air intake at that stage. Pie tins, fire extinguishers, phone books, you name it, are used regularly for this purpose. You dodged a bullet here. One other common problem is the fuel crossover pipes above the valves. They have a seam that can separate over time and then leak diesel into the engine and sump, "making oil" is the term.

Good old Detroit diesels. Had a bunch in logging equipment but never had a 6v53. Should be an emergency shut off for the blower and leaving the blower tripped was a great way to deter someone who didn’t know about from “borrowing” your machine for some reason. Tip, use your bucket to lift the front of the machine when turning, makes the turns easier and less side pressure on the tracks. Great video and inspirational to get me doing my own projects.

Whenever my wife ran our Diesel car outa fuel l'd use starting fluid AND propane to run the engine long enough to get the air out. Just using a 20# propane tank from my BBQ grill and a length of rubber hose to supply propane into the same place where you were spraying starting fluid. The starting fluid would start it & the propane would sustain it. Once the air was gone and the engine would run on it's own l turned off the propane. It was very effective, didn't hurt the engine & saved a lot of work cracking lines open and saved the starter too. ben/ michigan

What you have in that fuel looks like diesel algae. Looks like rust but it's actually a living organism. It clogs filters really good. If you drain the tank make sure to put some diesel algae fuel treatment in it. You can treat it without draining but you will be swapping filters for a while

6V53 2 stroke Detroit! Good little engine. The rack WAS stuck, maybe one on the other bank you didn’t check, as they are tied together mechanically, so one stuck rack sticks them all. Luckily it freed up on its own. It runs so cool because of the blower moving so much air through the cylinders during scavenging when both the intake ports at bottom of the stroke and the exhaust valves are open to scavenge the spent gases out and replace with fresh air. That air tends to cool the cylinders. There is NO intake or exhaust stroke so it is a true 2 stroke, easily heard in the sped up parts of the clip. My username is about these engines! They like to slobber oil out of the air box drains, hence “Driptroit” 😆 They are still the best diesels ever made. All diesells should be 2 stroke, as it is best for proper diesel operation. It is indeed a strong runner!! 👍🏻😋

Alright I know exactly why the engine ran away on ya a truck I revived with a 318 did the same thing. In that segment where you tested if the rack moved, it was actually stuck, but the reason it was stuck was because the injector was stuck pushed down, which if you review the footage you can tell because the rocker wasn't touching it, that holds the rack wide open (because Detroit's default to full throttle on start up), and those injectors probably stuck because of the state of the fuel. When the engine warmed up some it broke the injectors free and that let the throttle work as intended. The only way to shut the motor off like that successfully is to cut off the air to it

I appreciate your sense of humor (which in itself makes me question some of my choices), and you sure have some cool toys to play with. Which is one way of saying that I am envious, but not to worry. I am stuck in rural Alabama (which isn't saying much... Alabama has more "rural" than most states), and I don't get out much. Anyway, thanks for the entertainment. Great machine. What a Detroit diesel experience. it's always good to open both valve covers and check for the right movement of the injectors cam with wise grips. to avoid a Detroit to runaway it's good to have another person ready to chunk air inlet with proper blocking. when a DD run away it's finished the diesel fuel and feeds itself from burning it's own engine oil. 🤣 no fuel shut of will stop it. finally Detroit's built America. and, can run forever with good hand.

It's not just the fuel shutt off on those, if it leaks oil in, they can run away eating only their own oil until they are out of oil and go boom. They usually have an air flap emergency shut down
@airplanemaniacgaming7877

That's a true runaway situation, considering in the Fire Triangle here, the only thing left in your control (unless there's an air leak letting the air in anyways, then just hope it doesnt grenade too badly.) is the air, as the fuel part is the oil, and the ignition is compression.

Not uncommon on 2cycle detroits to have a injector hang from sitting, a hung injector will hold the fuel rack open and cause the engine to run off. Use a pair of vice grips on the fuel rack to help control the fuel while the valve cover is off.

Here's a remedy for hornets nests. A plastic solo cup 1/4 full of gasoline. Move slowly towards the offending buggers. And place the cup of gas so it covers the nest from the bottom ( so your going from the bottom of the nest up too where it's connected on a flat surface . Push the cup up fully leaving no room for their escape. About 3-4 seconds is all it takes. The gas fumes will knock them down into the gas and death comes fast. This will kill all of them in smaller nests. Use your judgement on the size of the nest. And yes you might get stung.
