The girls will appreciate that truck and will take better care of it and have pride in it knowing that they did the work on it and they are personally invested in it as well.

I just turned 57 6'2' and about 260 lbs at one time about 40 yrs ago maybe a couple yrs less i could fold up and get under the hood of that truck like Dub and Zee ....but not anymore id break something ....meaning a body part 😅😅 anywho great video .....never mind the critics ...you and the girls are creating memories that yall will never forget ..... you do it your way its your channel........cant wait to see this project complete ...and also you probably gonna end up buying and building another truck so they both have one lol ......

Im proud of you Hank for getting these girls involved in the build of this truck, instead of just giving them a finished truck. They will have something to be proud of when done.

Takes me back to the Auto-tech class I taught to military HS kids on an Air Force base in England. I loved working with young people who are so eager to learn. DoD has discontinued these types of classes due to cost cuts with public schools following suet. What you, Sleeperdude, and C&C Equepment are doing with young peaple is great!

Just love you all resurrecting this old truck and teaching Zee and Dub to work on it with Papa. My girls work on their cars and save a lot of money. Those old trucks had a lot of room under the hood, it’s so hard for some of us older ones to lean in or get inside like the girls are, 👍 Love these vids!

Just turned on Hank Embossed letters on Covers maybe ,Couple more tips is The forward head is always #1 Piston or using the Intake numbers ;Another tip is if plugs are faulty check the Distributor cap electrodes for corrosion or not there Using dielectric grease to stop loose spark and for removing boots easier ,Weak gas will Make engine run rough , Or checking OHMS on Plug wires making sure are all same number or close , Even looking at tailpipe for Soots for running Fat over oil consumption Blue running lean ,Or best tips start the engine in pitch black and watch for loose spark leaving the Plug boots or off the coil ,, Oh Hank Noticing smoking when starting possible Valve seals are dried could use Positive Seals easy install A little technical using firing order but can stop the blue smoke on start up ..Tips and Tricks Hank First thing my Grandad told me when I got my License Is - NO Machine Cares who you are,You Run it Don't let it Run You !

This is an exercise in what I really hate to do. If you can move it out of your way, do it. Seeing these girls struggle like they have, is why I take everything I can out of my way. Teaching them to do this sort of work, happens to be a very good thing. Making good work habits is smart. The up side is they know what goes into doing this. Removing the breather also would be a huge help. You're a great teacher brother. Keep up the good work.

I've been watching everything that you guys have been doing in watching what your Grandpa's been doing to teach you girls and I think it's amazing what you girls have been learning alongside your grandfather and your dad.

I really feel the front differential of this truck is also full of water! Please check it? Also, sliding about a 6" length of fuel hose down over the plug helps them both start and thread them all the way in easier.

Hank, on the original steering column, the ignition switch is broken, I'm not talking about the "Tumbler" (with the key) but the plastic "Switch" with the spring inside itself. the rod end fits in a slot in the switch mounted down on the column, and that large multi wire plug locks onto.

Love how your teaching these girls how to do for themselves ,hey get with Derek at vice grip garage he makes hood savers to keep the square body hoods from bending

Two holes on valve cover is for PVC valve and oil fill you need it. It's for the blow by truck will idle high without hooking up the pcv valve

my dad use too put grease on them too keep the gasket in place and some string in two of the holes on each side!

Y'all just be glad the truck has exhaust manifolds and the stock valve cover bolts and timing chain cover and the oil pan bolts were usually a combination of 3/8,7/16, and 1/2 inch bolts.. usually the valve covers are 7/16, and the pcv positive crankcase ventilation, and yeah it allows you to bleed pressure out of the crankcase or the bottom of the motor which is a good thing... there's actually a more scientific equivalent explanation but i don't remember the whole thing...

Hank found many years of working on the engine trhat taking the hood of sometimes is a lot easier!

Chevy has a 18436572 firing order. Drivers side bank is 1357 all odd starting with 1 in front. Passenger bank 2468 all even starting with 2 in front. If distributors installed correctly the rotor should point at #1 cylinder at top dead center. As a square body K5 owner I love chevy trucks also!

The dry rotted hose has the PCV valve on it (Positive Crankcase Ventilation), which is a one way valve that allows air to escape the engine but not go into it. It's a smog thing to keep blow by from polluting the air. The girls are doing a great job! You are both very pretty 🙂

you can get those that turn by hand too i see them alot i think its cleaner looking with regular bolts myself

You should have put the spark plug wires on after you worked on the valve covers makes it a little easier getting those valve covers out of there with no wires in the way

I love your Hank and Wiley videos but I've enjoyed these more. Here is why: 1. Your got kids from this era off a cellphone and outdoors learning things that can help them in the future. 2. You're using old metal and technology. Those trucks could be disassembled and completely rebuilt on a Saturday by a guy and his buddies while talking hunting, fishing, or football. 3 You're teaching those girls not to abide by stereotypical rules of females don't know cars. 4. At no time have I seen or heard you bring out your old DI voice. 😂 Thank you for allowing me to watch a grandpa bond with his grandkids.

Man, that truck is running poorly. Seems like its missing on two or three cylinders and way to much smoke coming from tailpipes. Sounds like it needs some repairs. Better check firing order in case plug wires got mixed up after new plugs got installed causing it to misfire .

Oh and the other reason why they say you are actually supposed to use the spark plug socket is to try to prevent putting in the plugs wrong when you use the socket and hand thread the spark plugs in to keep from cross threading it, and then it will also keep it straight so when you go to tighten it with the ratchet and socket and extension and it gets in a awkward angle you don't break the spark plugs and yeah ive done that..

Nice truck

Dub and Zee clockwise is tightening, and counterclockwise is loosening. Start all bolts or threaded objects by hand. Don't use the ratchet because it's much harder to start them using the ratchet. You can use a socket and sometimes a socket and an extension will help get it started. Good job, and God bless you all!

The steering shaft with the new column might have to be rotated 180° if they replaced the rag joint under the hood and put it on upsidedown so hold the column with some pressure and rotate the steering wheel until it drops in hope that helps🤘

A/C delco comes all pre gapped, and actually you have a feeler gauge, and you also have a spark plug guage

Dub and zee if you want to get a little more access you can get in the engine bay by sitting on the inner fender that way the older truck had all the room. The hose to the carburetor was a PVC valve

Hank, I think that you’re learning as much as your granddaughters are? LOL

You are actually supposed to use a spark plug socket one type have a rubber isolation tube that the spark plug fits in and it would protect the plug from being damaged easily when starting it into the cylinder head and the newer style is a magnetic socket to also try to prevent dropping the spark plugs out of the doc and i said that you are actually supposed to use them is constantly working on vehicles with headers its usually a combination of a flex head ratchet, and a few sockets that fit the spark plugs only different lengths and a wrench or two usually for the hex area at the top of the spark plug socket, and that being said i had a 86 Chevy k20 custom deluxe regular cab long farm truck and it was the same style front end as what is on the 74 you guys are working on, with the girl's, and it had a built 1975 355 sbc i put in the truck and it had heddman long tube full length headers and it was usually taking the spark plugs out with a wrench...fun,fun, fun lol...

Hank I don’t mean to criticize but you are absolutely killing me. Take off the air cleaner and set it aside. Mark your plug wires, pull them off of the plugs and set them aside out of the way. Pull the pcv valve and line off of the valve cover and set it aside (this is the line that was dry rotted). Pull the big vacuum line off of the brake booster and set it out of the way. Don’t crack the plastic pipe that the hose attaches to as this is how your brake booster gets vacuum. No vacuum and no power brakes. If you aren’t sure about something read the instructions. If those valve cover gaskets are different on both sides then there is a correct way and a wrong way. Look at the instructions and see what is recommended. Don’t make things so hard on yourself and your girls. Good luck.

only thing diesel i have had so far is my tractor. so of course i am more familiar with a gas engine, but my diesel is not a big deal, its a little 3 cyl 22hp yanmar.

Hankni know your making content for the video but you should have had the girls do a thorough cleaning under that hood and get all the grease and mud off before you put all the new shiny bits on. Would have at least done a krylon overhaul on the block to give it a face-lift before all the goodies. Now if you just doing a practice run and your going to put in a complete new motor then I can see giving them girls a test run on mechanics. Anyway still looking forward to hear a name for the truck truck and al the teardown for getting it ready for paint.

The rear axle shifted a lot at 1 hour and 36 seconds. Might want to check that out.

Could show um how to just clean the plugs if they aren’t bad looking. Carb cleaner, fine wire brush, check gap again.

The valve covers were going to have to come back off anyway. The one with the breather was put on with the breather facing the front. The old one was to the back. The one with the PVC hole was put on with the hole facing the back. It needed to be facing the front. But good job working with the girls again.

Hank its a slow process you have to explain so they remenber or they are going to be gas and go girls my gran daughter went 72000 miles in between oil changes she had oil filter in side the oil pan she did add oil when low.
