I appreciate the artist that must have worked at Big Lots and made those signs at that time.

Big Lots original business model was buying products from small unknown labels and brands; also distressed brands. They were a "buy out" company. So the thing with a small company is it has to have a quality product to compete with the big box names. So for instance, my mom adored them for their one-off pasta sauces that were not available at Kroger or Marsh's. Because those companies pay Kroger for conspicuous placement of their product to attract buyers. So with Big Lots there were all sorts of products that could not be found at large retailers and grocery stores. Today Big Lots more closely resembles a Dollar General with the same products that can be found basically anywhere. "Big Lots Odd Lots" is no more the store it once was.

I remember when Big Lots was more like a bargain store also I knew of two Big Lots locations in the Cleveland, OH area, that were in the same plaza as a discount movie theater. I would go into Big Lots to buy candy before going to the movies. In fairness to the theater, I still bought a pop and a popcorn there. (Both locations, as well as the movie theaters, have since closed.) I also liked the selections of imported cookies, crackers, and candies, as well as the closeouts. Now, Big Lots seems like a Family Dollar or Dollar General on steroids, but with a furniture department.
