It also shows the big role played by the Drill Sergeant, in the system of personalized training created by the U.S. Army.

During Basic Training at Fort Ord May - July 1972 H-1-3, 1st Platoon, 3rd Squad Leader while Vietnam was still raging on. I had absolute respect for our DI's who were teaching us how to live through combat. One night our DI came into our Barracks Drunk, on a Saturday night, yelling commands etc. We asked/told him to leave. The 4 1st Platoon Squad Leaders talked to the Company Commander (CC) who removed the DI. There wasn't another DI to replace him so the squad leaders made a commitment to perform above and beyond w/o an assigned DI, listening all the other DI's and we did. Thank you Captain Coonz

That was pretty fun. I went to basic at Fort Leonard Wood in 1973. Our drill Sargent was a great guy, Sargent 1st Class Garcia. Our platoon passed the hat and got about $70. One of our guys snuck out of the barracks and got over to the PX and bought him a really nice watch which we presented to him after graduation. Strictly forbidden, but we did it anyway. He seemed to be really touched by our good feelings towards him.

1976 - 1997 US Army…12 years as 11 Bravo.. 9 years 72 E, Tactical Telecommunication…now I’m just one of those who served. I’m proud to say that I was a SOLDIER.

Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸 My Dad served during The Korean Conflict. He was a Staff Sergeant, sharp-shooter, worked for The Stars and Stripes, and played football on the Kobe (Japan) Cobras (Kobras?).

Barracks look really familiar. We used to sneak out on those window ledge things to smoke during basic.

Company B/2/2. November 1965 and then assigned there for 2yrs in Company A Special Troops.

Basic training, Ft. Knox, KY. B-18 - 5th training brigade. June - Aug 1969. Not fun except for marching and singing the Jody calls.

I was hoping to see where they were trained to beat the hell out of us if we got out of line, and other fun stuff. Oh, and the swearing: there was such swearing. But, i enjoyed every minute of it under these training cadre. I hear they can't cuss at them anymore. Too bad.

You’re right. I graduated in 2019. They got rid of the shark attack in 2020 too.
