Shane Barrios Even if the car landed perfectly even, it would likely still destroy the suspension if nothing else. These weren't baja buggies, so they aren't really designed to cope with big jumps and come away undamaged.

Downforce was actually why he flipped. The front of the car went over the hill, where the spoiler wasn’t providing downForce. So when the back and spoiler went over the hill, they went down, while the front end continued to lift, eventually causing the car to flip.

Webber flipped on the way to Mulsanne. Dumbreck flipped on the way down to Indy. They weren't on the same part or even same straight, but within a mile one of another, yes, indeed. That screwup could killed someone. I doubt Mercedes will ever try again to win Le Mans after '55 and '99. If they are, they're crazy.

Mercedes had the same problem with their Mercedes-Benz CLR in 1999 at Le Mans, the shape of the car was creating too much lift and the car flipped if the front lifted just a few centimeters from the road

@@zegamerz1980 Not quite. The car had amazing down force and I suspect the same had happened to the car here. The rear spoiler creates great down force however also produces drag, so a good way to increase down force without drag is through the rear diffuser, front splitter and canards on the front and rear bumper. The thought process with the 1999 CLR, was to increase the length of the front and rear bumpers to fit bigger canards creating almost drag free downforce, but what they also did to create space was decrease the distance between the front and rear wheels. What this actually caused was the car to be unstable and have a "see-saw" affect. Once the nose lifted under hard acceleration and perhaps even an ever so slight incline in the track, air was simply caught on the under carriage forcing the car up.

Nicolas Soto I'm surprised that they even have LMP races at Road Atlanta the track just doesn't seen to be ideal for those types of cars.

chrishu76 LMP tech especially with aerodynamics has changed a lot since the 90's. For example, those huge holes on the tops of the fenders? that's to reduce pressure build up in the wheel wells that causes said flips. Plus unlike a certain more popular form of racing (*cough* Nascar *cough*), sportscar racing is an adapt or fail mentality. Changes only happen if the issue is dangerous enough to realistically get someone killed or injured. Not just because there is a good chance of a wreck.

asymsolutions Thanks for the info I really like LMP cars they are some of my favorite cars in Forza. Its a shame that they cut so many of them for 5. Its also kinda sad that Peugeot is no longer involved in LMP racing the 908 is still one of my favorite LMP cars.

chrishu76 The Porsche 911 GT1 wasn't a LMP car, it was classed as a GT1 car against the Mclaren F1, Ferrari F40 LMs and Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR. that would not have worked. the rotational speed was pretty high, so even if he would have rotated for exactly 360 degrees, the ongoing rotation momentum would have destroyed the back.

actually happend to mercedes once. they had 3 of these cases (with 1 car), the first one was as you described. the team just couldn't believe the driver and carried on, even after the second (this time obvious incident) they carried on as nothing happend. No changes to car made. and the at the 3rd time, the car litterally flew like 50 meters and crashed next to the street and they fixed it. It was even recorded. gladly only minor injuries happend.
