Wow, what a little water can do to a driveway over time is devastating! This gravel driveway is in dire need of repair before it gets any worse. I believe some digging, Geo fabric and a bunch of Rip Rap will save this one. Let’s GO…

Nicely done,Sam 👍🏻! Dragging that fabric around is no joke, especially when it’s hot outside. That felt seems to make it hotter 🥵. Might blast that culvert with a bunch of water and get it mostly cleaned out. Couple IBC totes, trash pump and some pvc pipe might do it. I say might because I’ve never had to do it either. Saw my package at the end and was like “Hey ! That’s mine” lol. Great video and looking forward to the new road going in 👍🏻

I had a drive in Knoxville on two acres that was on both a steep hill and a curve! I poured concrete channels running diagonally across the drive like sergeant stripes. There were three of them that bled off the water as it accumulated down the hill. I went from having to rake gravel back onto the drive four to five times per year to never having to do it again.

Sam, another great video-especially your message. One thing that really stood out to me on this one-there is SO much valuable knowledge here for people new in the business, or just things we don’t even think about. At the quarry, the loader operator raising the boom after getting a full bucket to get the scale to register. You in the skidsteer moving dirt and stone-get a bucket and back away from the pile to where you’re dumping/placing…not only faster cycle times but not tearing up the ground resulting in more work to dress it up. So much knowledge and information here if people know what they’re looking at

2 weeks ago I cleaned out a 12" 35 foot concrete culvert that's been buried for decades. completely full (no gap at the top) of dirt and roots it took me about 2 hours to clean it out with a trailer jetter and excavator. Your customer's culvert would be easier than the one I just did. Ideally you'd use a Truck Jetter which is just a big pressure washer with a Jetter hose with rearward facing jets. Every municipality of any size has one and most drain cleaning companies have at least a trailer mounted unit that would work there. A truck mounted unit (70-80 gpm at 1500-2000 psi) would clean that pipe out completely in about 3 minutes if the debris has somewhere to go. That means the debris and water can't be backing up back into the pipe or the water will carry the debris right back in to the pipe. So ideally a Jet/Vac unit would be best and, like I said, take only a few minutes. Probably cost $700-1,200 depending on how far they have to drive to get there and if they can dump the debris onsite. Those trucks cost $350,000-500,000 and bill out $350 to 700/hour with a 2-3 hour minimum (I'm in Minnesota). A simple Truck jetter will work, but again, you have to deal with the water and debris. Alternately you can hire a local drain cleaning company with a trailer jetter (18 gpm at 4000 psi). It would take about 30-60 minutes to clear the debris out but there are a couple issues to deal with. The debris backup is a bid one. What I've done is have an excavator theret o bucket the water and debris out of a pre-dug hole. The other problem is water supply. Trailer jetters only hold 250-300 gallons and will only jet for 15-20 minutes before needing to be refilled with clean water. Refilling that tank from a garden hose takes about 30 minutes and you're being charged for all that time, of course. Price is probably going to be about the same as a Jet/Vac unit. Another possibility for debris control is to hire a pump truck to pump the pre-dug hole while jetting. Again, having a place onsite to dump it is important. Keeping in mind the costs, it might be cheaper to dig it up and replace it since that driveway isn't paved. There are cheaper more labor intensive ways to go about it that include a cable and tire like you mentioned, but they aren't always successful and can make things worse.
@tristardiggin
@tristardiggin 26 күн бұрын
Hey thanks for all the good info. Probably least expensive way would be to dig it out I suppose. We are hoping a good rain storm will start the process since the ditches are clean and the erosion is stopped. Thanks

In the county where I used to work as a stormwater engineer, we would clean out the culverts with a high-powered pipeline pigs which sprayed the water backwards through water ports to flush out the debris. Start at the pipe outfall, and it would pull itself up the pipe via water pressure to flush everything out.

I agree with you about digging around utilities, I've been doing this stuff since 1995, and I'm always nervous about it. The last 2 days, I've been digging across a golf course, burying new irrigation lines and repairing old ones. Nothing was located because it's on the private property, and I'm relying on the owner's memory of where lines are located. So far, he has been dead on the money, and I haven't hit anything. Thanks for the message too. We need to hear and heed God's word.

I use a 1" pvc pipe long enough to get thru the culvert then I tie on a 3/8 inch strand that i got from my local power company and I have a preform on the side I pull with my Kubota 040 and the other side is wrapped around a 15 inch smaller tire and attached back to itself. then I slowly pull the tire thru. sometimes it takes multiple pulls to clear the culvert completely but its a lot easier than digging it out of the culvert.

LoL brother me and you both know the biggest fail in driveways is people just don't maintain them every once in a while ditches need to be cleaned and recut and shaped and I don't know what it is but fixing a driveway when it gets like that is harder to me than just building a new one LoL

I worked in waste water for the City of Corpus Christi. Tx and the storm sewer people used to jet out the culverts with a vector truck and a jet nozzle that was at 18000 psi and pulled itself through the pipe. They also had a chain bucket unit that could clean out pipes! Here is a link to a jetting vid of cleaning out a sewer: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpx-fKSo0qqaoo0.html&ab_channel=DrainMachineoxfordshire

Rant 100% right. People hear what they want to hear, and if they aren't sure they don't ask questions to clarify, and get on the same page. A lot of it has to do with incompetence. People get jobs, get appointed to positions that they are completely unqualified for, and that affects everything around them, and it's everywhere. It's the norm now.

Get a hold of your county council person for that area and tell him we’re trying to develop this area to bring more money to the county and we have a driveway tile that leads to the property and it would be nice if the county would maintain the right away to have the county road department send it’s flush truck out and clean this tile so the driveway doesn’t keep washing out so people will come and purchase this property to bring more money in for the county.

There is a better way to lay out that felt was it an option to order two 12 ft rolls for ever how long you need it start on the county road lay the start on the ground. Park a piece of equipment on it take your excavator with a pipe to put inside the roll and just walk it down as it unrolls. But if you can’t get in rolls forget what I just said. Lol
