My dad was a mechanic by trade. He had a hod podge of tools much like yours, but not near as many as you have. I still have a few of his tools. Not much use for them for them, but they are like gold to me. A few would make some scratch their heads in wonder such as a valve lapper or a valve stem groove cleaner. Your not a hoarder. More like a preservationist for posterity. Nothing wrong with that. Enjoyed this video, thanks for sharing.

The short skinny wrenches are good for centering turret tools in the Brown & Sharpe screw machines. I agree about the sockets, prefer 6 points. I use impact sockets whenever I can. I've had a lot of bad luck with the chrome vanadium ones just splitting. Thanks for posting :)

Me? I switched to yoga mats for my drawer liners. I pick them up used, or find some promotional ones that are cheap. They come in bright colors making it easy (and fun) to see all of the tools in each drawer. "I have too many wrenches" said no mechanic ever.

I love it! I am fortunate enough to have my father's and my grandfather's plus my own tools. My grandfathers are very early Craftsman and my dad are from the 50s 60s and 70s. I keep complete sets in the basement the shop the shed in a shipping container that I call my hardware store and in out building on the far part of our property. I try to keep them as organized as possible. Because nothing is more time consuming than having to walk a distance and rooting through draws to find something. Thanks Mr. Pete I have learned so much from you over the years and I really appreciate it. P.S. Im that guy that keeps everything please don't hate me for that. LoL

Sheet of corrugated cardboard cut to fit works surprisingly well in place of those rubber mats.

That little set of Craftsman 1/4" drive magnet socket inserts have been life savers for me a few times through the years. Super for holding a small nut in a socket and ensuring the nut stays in place when you have to install or remove it under dash, or buried in a tight cramped spot that only a socket on an extension end will reach. I have had the same set in the little yellow pouch for at least 40 years and only needed them a handful of times. However, when i needed them they were indispensable.

Somewhere in my life i accumulated a set of those small pressed steel spanners. Like you i kept them in a "special" place out of the way but still handy. Ya just never know when you might want to use them for "something". Funny thing is, 40years later i never have .lol

Thank you Mr Pete. It's fun to watch these videos because I find myself agreeing with great fervor on many of your tool preferences and opinions. I started culling my tools and then putting together dedicated kits for each trade or task, that way I could put complete sets of things in each kit. This eliminates the need to pull cross over tool for different jobs and saying "what the heck did I do with those channel-locks?"

After more than a half century as a big truck and mining equipment mechanic. Of all the ratchets I've owned from every manufacturer. I've never stripped out an S&K ratchet. I still have a 1/2 inch drive where the handle is bent to about 30 degrees from the extension pipe.

When you mentioned your 1938 Plymouth it brought back memories. I had a 1938 Plymouth Coupe and a 1938 Plymouth Truck. They were great vehicles for me.

In the early '70s I built up a collection of Bedford spanners and sockets. I still have them, and what wonderful Whitworth tools they are. I bought them to work on and rebuild my 1966 Norton 650SS, which I still have.

Please excuse me for snooping, but how about doing a video with still pictures of you and your tractors, projects, etc, from when you were in your prime. Very interesting - I find it interesting the way so many of the youtubers that I watch love their made in America tools the way I love my Made in England tools - with the exception of my collection of Petersen made in USA vise grips - they are the best! More toolbox tours please :-)

That weird wrench at 30.00. The button on the handle is for holding a pipe extension so it won't slip off. The strange copper color is probably a copper-beryllium alloy used for its high strength and non-sparking where flammable fumes are present.

I enjoyed your video because you go trough things without belaboring the point. Some people think they have to go through 200 rusty (some broken) tools and read the manufacturer (and sometimes the size & country of origin) of each one. I rarely subscribe to any videos (I did subscribe to yours) because frankly, they put me to sleep. Also, your tools are clean, like mine. I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your videos. If you do not waste your hard earned money on drinking, drugs, chasing women or gambling can not think of a better vise then having a large collection of quality tools. Can remember a smart old mechanic telling that its better to loose a $20 bill then a much used tool. The tool will make you plenty of money over its lifetime. Lyle - Have to laugh as my ignition wrenches are in a small wooden box as well, but mine still has the slide in lid. I also know how to use tappet wrenches, learned when I was becoming knowledgeable about one of those Chrysler flat head 6 engines. My great uncle who had the family farm we lived next to gave up driving in 1967 and gave me his old 1950 Plymouth coupe, a 'Special Deluxe' model painted that puke green color they had. He had used it like a pickup, hauling feed in the rather large trunk, etc. He believed changing oil was a rip off - so he never changed it, just added. I had to take out the oil filter with a cold chisel and hammer. First engine I ever rebuilt and the car went back to school with me as a junior - was great transportation. The gal I was dating that summer complained about the scratchy seats if she was wearing shorts. After 54 years of being married she still will bring that up - LOL. My roller stack resembles yours way too much. Like my one brother in law says 'if we need it I have it'. And I needed some yesterday afternoon as I pulled the rear spring out from under the Model A pickup. Thanks for a good trip through the wrenches over the first cup of coffee. Keep up the good work.

I don't know for sure but I think you need to get a few more wrenches. You can never have to many. They make drawer liner that doesn't slip. It is like the stuff you can put a board on to sand and it doesn't move. I bought a roll of it and cut it to fit. I threw that foam junk out years ago.

I enjoyed the trip through the tool box. It reminds me that I really need to clean mine out. Years ago, I used to go to the outdoor flea market every Saturday and there was a guy that sold new Craftsman tools. He would wait until Sears had a sale on the large sets, buy a few, then break it all apart into bins (like your shelves) and sell the individual pieces. He was there every weekend. They built a Walmart there many years ago and I'm not sure what happened to everyone. It sure was fun.

Loved the video and your commentary. Enjoyed seeing the variety of tools you have accumulated. I only have three tool box sets like that. I use shelf liner in the color available at ReStore. I recently bought 10 flats of miscellaneous hardware at auction for $2. Threw rusted half out, I spent best part of a week going through it so I knew what was there even though I will forget. Keep on being you.

Impact sockets are six point for a reason. I have that same set of craftsmen ignition wrenchs in the plastic bag and never used them. Also have the same impact in the blue case. Love that.

You have quite the collection of tools. Love the old New Britain ratchets. I have been searching high and low for those "speed discs" and can't find them anywhere. In desperation I made one from a fender washer.

I like the way your toolbox is laid out. It has lots of thin drawers which are perfect. They are always the higher end of the toolbox line and you don't see them as often.

I have come to realize that there are two ways to look at tool availability. You can either have one version of any given tool organized into 'sets' which allow you to find the tool you need quickly, -or- you can have a thousand copies of the same tool organized into any kind of storage with absolutely no worries that you won't be able to find at least one copy of the tool that you need. I have been both kinds of tool owner over the years and I lately tend to prefer the former version rather than the latter. As always, thanks for the insight into your tool collection. Reminds me of my tool boxes on a slightly smaller scale. I painted my first metric sockets red to make them easy to spot when I didn't have a socket holder thing for them. I haven't needed the socket spinner thing often, but really appreciate it when I do.

I bet those drawers resemble millions of drawers across this country. I can also pretty clearly envision how they progressed to their current state of readiness as you picked up things at sales and auctions...who cares if there's a duplicate, duplicates come in handy. It's also handy to have a small collection of "cheaper" wrenches in the case you need to "modify" one to serve a particular project. Thanks for the tour!

I've got an old Snap-on K1000 tool box with 2 top boxes on it that are stuffed with tools . Been bending wrench's for dang near 45 yrs . Problem now is trying to sell it an recoup some of my coin .

When my youngest brother passed away I was the executor and one job was selling his Snap-on tools in a huge rolling red box, He had everything need in Imperial as well as metric as he was a foreign car mechanic. Mechanics tools I do think multiply in big rolling boxes like yours. That is why you don't remember having them.

There is no such thing as a ‘hoarder’ with tools. We never went legally ‘metric’ in the UK, just a kind of accommodation for foreigners in Europe. I much prefer imperial tools (of course I would!! I’m English.), but they are harder to find, except at car boot sales, auctions (nothing like your’s) and often tools sold here made by American companies (sadly outsourced in China a lot.) I would be perfectly happy to spend a day with sandwiches and a flask of tea just rooting around in your garage at all the SPANNERS (wrenches indeed!! 😂). I suspect we share similar genes with respect to ‘collecting’ tools. Fun to watch!! 👍🇬🇧👍🇺🇸👍

Regardless of our age, a man cannot possibly have too many tools. Tools are the most difficult thing to part with. (I MAY need it one day.) When I moved 4-5 years ago to my hopefully final residence, I went through my wrenches and sockets and other tools and gave many of them to my sons or grandsons. It helped me clean out multiples of things I had, and the kids appreciated them. That was a good clean-out. The remainder of my tools are now hung on a tool-board on the wall for easier access to what I might need and clearly marked with sizes. I wish I had a tool-board years ago! I am still acquiring some specialty tools, not necessarily for me, but I have my boys in mind for after I am gone. Thanks.

Toss, the brake tools? No way! You have no idea how hard I've looked for a drum brake tool to make pulling the springs easy.

I have a set of JC Penny deep well sockets. I bought them in 1974 when I graduated HS

I love vintage S-K, I got my dad's S-K 1/2" Socket set with SAE & Metric with both deep wall and regular sockets along with his set of S-K combination wrenches, along with his S-K screw driver set from the late 60s early 70s after he died and I absolutely love them. Not just bc they were my dad's but bc they're really good quality and have held up to some heavy use I've put them through over the past 8 or so years and they're still like new.

You mentioned how useless those stamped, sheet metal wrenches. Back when I had started my first civilian job doing maintenance at a TV station my mother-in-law decided to give me a gift of tools one Christmas. She wasn't rich so she must have shopped at a dime store or the bargain bin at Sears, where she worked. It had an assortment of about 10 or 12 inexpensive tools including a handle with different screwdriver tips and a set of three, open end wrenches made from sheet metal. I felt much the same way as you do about them, but I thanked her with a smile and put them in my tool box which I used at work. Well, it wasn't long before I needed one of them. Electric/electronic controls, like toggle switches and potentiometers use threads like 3/8-32 and 1/2-32 on their barrel mounts and the nuts are very thin, like 1/8" or less. Often a nut is placed between the panel where the control is mounted and the body of the control and it is very difficult to reach. Those sheet metal wrenches fit in there perfectly where even the "real" wrenches that were advertised as thin would not. I used them many, many times for those controls. And I began to find other uses for them. In fact, I found them so useful that I even performed maintenance on them, like steel wool and painting them when any rust appeared. I discovered they were hardened so they have lasted for around 60 years now. I still have that three wrench set. It sits on my electronic bench in my garage. I wish I could find a source for additional sets and sizes of hardened, sheet metal wrenches. .

Also, the the claw pickup is BETTER then the telescoping magnet, 1# it works on non-ferrous too, 2# doesn't get attracted to everything else then what I want it to get to, 3# can always grip a small magnet if I wanna do it that way! Please donate some to Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Salvation Army or Goodwill, the overbids for PeteBay have been ridiculously successful.

That 7/8" wrench with the button attaches to a hollow bar to make a long wrench. Snap On sold them too. It also could be a no-spark wrench (beryllium-copper) for working around pipe flanges in explosive environments.

For drawer liners... I closely measured & cut out liners from large cardboard boxes. They work very well, some have been in for 40 plus years. Their lighter color, and excellent sound attenuation qualities are great... the price is right too, and should one ever become 'skanky' it's easy to replace.

Mr. Pete, Those thin Craftsman wrenches are good for small thin jamb nuts that regular wrenches don't fit and the ignition wrenches are good for working on motorcycle and 4-wheeler carburetors.

I always learn something new. I had never seen ratcheting open end wrenches before and I had forgotten all about 8 point sockets (I need some of those for those square tractor drain plugs). Love the 1952 Plymouth literature!

12 point wrenches are good for really tight spots where you don’t have much room to move. Also, they can be used to drive square things like a tap in a pinch. You just have to go up a few sizes up to find one that fits.

Nope. Ive got the sheet metal craftsman wrenches, and I don't plan on throwing them away any time soon. I grew up with all12 point wrenches and sockets so later we got 6 pointers and they seemed awkward at first, The 6 point tools are more secure. 12 points for where you don't have much stroke, we need then both. (we had some 8 pointe sockets for the squares too) Glad you love tools and machining! Happy Sunday! He is risen indeed!

Back years ago all of the electricians carried the two bladed electricians screwdrivers on thier tool pouch. The end of one blade could be used for a screwdriver. Have not used either if my two electricians knives since before Y2K. Thought that I had a lot of combination, ignition, flare nut wrenches with close to 150 but you have me beat five times over. Used the two combination wrench with 7/16 & 9/16" open end and a swivel headed socket on opposite side when installing unistrut & conduit. Have a couple of 1/4, 5/16, " square drive ratcheting wrenches for opening the acetelyne valve on B & MC tanks. Have at least a dozen screw starters. Years ago a flea market vendor was selling the top quality split shaft with the red handle for only 5 for $5.

You only have one roll away tool cabinet. I have SEVEN! Two are for machining tools and such. The other five are for mechanics tools. I learned many years ago that the rubber mats will stay in place with just a touch of rubber cement! Now I use body side molding adhesive but, it's just rubber cement on steroids. LOL I would love to have that Starrett clock! Thank you for all of your amazing videos!

Those Craftsman stamped wrenches were sold in small sets, in soft plastic cases and were labeled as ‘ignition’ wrenches. When distributors had points and could be rebuilt, they had these tiny nuts in tight spaces that those wrenches were meant to be used on. Trying to replace the condenser with a regular wrench usually had you ending up using a set of pliers and ruining the small nut. They were very useful tools.

Got the same long super-rachet!

In some (usually less than desirable circumstances) when i needed to tap a hole somewhere underhood where a tap needed to reach, i would use a combination of a 3/8" drive sliding T handle, a ratchet adaper, extension or length needed, coupled with an 8 point socket with a tap inserted into the socket. Depending on where i needed to get the tap i might tape wrap the tap to the socket to keep it secured. If the situation called for a 1/4" drive 8pt socket to drive the tap then a reducing adaper wss added to the extension to make things work. The ratchet adapter made use very nice to use. Eight point sockets, so rarely needed, but when you do they are nice to have.
