Skip to 30:28 for the FPGA Gameboy Action!
Ebay was generous, and provided me with two of these excellent high resolution LED displays! Of course, no documentation was provided, so I had to figure it out. This is the start to finish of how that was accomplished.

I feel this comment... I had this idea back when I was a stagehand but totally forgot about it and that was before I was motivated enough to learn this kind of stuff. I just posted on reddit about it and got referred to this video, mind officially blown. I just so happen to have a super NT but I don't know if I can do modifications to the cores like on the mini

On closer inspection, there's a few 128x64 P2.5 displays that match up nicely. Still not "so cheap it feels like stealing", but almost there! I bet in a year it'll be feasible to make a nice Pico-8 LED Laptop :D

Hey Kevtris: SO about the Hi-Def NES mod and the Famicom Disk System -- the sound is broken. Additionally, the settings to enable FDS sound doesn't save when you save your settings. This means that you need to re-enable it whenever you start the game again. That wouldn't be too big an issue on it's own except that you cannot access the menu until side B of the game card has been inserted. So for a game like Metroid; you don't ever get to hear the awesome title music without loading side b and then purposefully breaking it and re-loading side A. Will there ever be a fix? Does this work on the Nt Mini and just doesn't work here? Thanks.

Do these update one line at a time like CRT? If so it would be heavenly to create a 40" 4:3 240×320 or 480 x 640 retro gaming display that could work with light guns. If a custom retro gaming controller is used then a 15khz 240p image could be made to skip odd lines on a 480p display to preserve that scanline look.
@kevtris
@kevtris 4 ай бұрын
it refreshes in sets of lines so light guns wouldn't be too happy. the video has to be buffered and scanned out to each set of 30 lines at a time (line count varies with display, some are more some are less). it is refreshing multiple parts at once to keep the brightness up

@@kevtris Shame. Still... 160x120 panels means you can make a 240x320 screen. It's worth it just for that (so old games can look good without scaling).

Reverse engineering game consoles and implementing them into FPGA's takes decades of electronics/programming knowledge. Especially if there's incomplete documentation on system chipsets. With that being said.. There was plenty of reverse engineering efforts (lots of early work done by kevtris himself) on the NES, Atari 2600, colecovision, and their hardware. The genesis and SNES added a whole other layer of complexity and difficulty, of which he's currently maintaining FPGA products with those systems, still ironing out verilog bugs, which takes time. Now imagine the N64 just exponentially adding a layer of complexity... it really won't be done any time soon unless hardware documentation is leaked of that system's chipsets.

Hi Kevtris - wonder if there's a possibility you can look into the troublesome audio issues with the PC Engine Duo consoles? Changing out DAC chips, sound chips, checking points with a multi meter and recapping sometimes wont solve the issue, so looking to see if you can deep dive on what is really the cause. I have a couple of consoles with the issue and i refuse to give up on them. It will help out greatly.
