Whilst I love my Scania, it's time to hand it over to someone I can trust and move on to pastures new. How about the super-sized Kenworth W900L as used in the film Smokey and the Bandit? Will this thing fit on the tiny European roads? Can I get it on to the Euro Tunnel train? Find out as I drive a Kenworth over to Southampton in the England.

when it comes to giving way to big trucks my general rule is: they are bigger therefore they have right of way. if a truck has a trailer on I always give at least 4 car lengths or more for them to turn safely

people all over the world do not realize it takes a lot longer to stop 80,000 lbs. then it does 4,000 lbs. this is why i believe people need to take a truck driving coarse before they can get their license. so they will stop saying it was the truckers fault for not stopping when they get into an accident because they pulled out in front of him/her. same thing goes for trains, it is not uncommon in the U.S. to see a train with more than 5 locomotives pulling 200+ cars. it takes more than a mile to stop 1 million+ pounds of freight.

Hi Squirrel, First of all, great video. I know truck drivers in Canada, so I can answer your questions with a certain degree of confidence. I know that it takes more than a year to get comfortable with parking a trailer, and that is with a few parking jobs a day (driving locally and not long distance, so more trailers moved at shorter distances). I have been told that some people cannot park properly even after a couple of years driving though, and take their sweet time doing the parking. In exams, the truck driver has 5 minutes to reverse the trailer and park it within 20 cm or so of a dock, which can seem like a long time, but really isn't. Parking on the off side is very difficult. If you drive a non-sleeper truck, there is a window behind the driver which one can look through, instead of looking at the right mirror, in which of course you would see nothing but your own trailer until truck and trailer get aligned again. Otherwise, a person to guide on the outside is required. Meaningless to say, most of the time truck drivers here park on the driver's side, so that the driver can lean out the window and point the trailer in the right direction while nothing is visible in the mirror. Just as a side note, not only trucks are bigger in North America, but the trailers are longer than in Europe as well, up to 53'. However, streets are wider and straighter, so it will be interesting to see how a North American Truck sim would turn out.

Kenworths don't have a logo on top of the bonnet unlike a Mack which has a dog. As we in the industry say, "spend the day looking up a dogs bum". Your reference for road positioning is absolutely correct, it is what we use in real life as well as the off side mirror.

Keep up the good work and I have a tip and I know that I'm not a pro at this game, matter of fact I never played it before but I like it and wish I could anyway, you know when you go to Calalis, and when you are makin te right turn to go into the port, try turning left and then maybe it'll be eaiser to turn into the port to go down the ramp and that way the AI cars don't get in your way when you drive large loads.

Before my wife got sick I drove trucks here in the US. I drove two W-900's among many other types. The first had a 13 spd with a 14L 3406 500 hp Cat. The second had a 15L 13 spd C15 550 hp Cat. Both pulled really strong. The King of the Hill Cat was a 16L engine and I THINK it was only built 2 years due to horrendous fuel consumption.

I don't know if anyone else has commented yet on this... But I'm amazed at how quickly you picked up on the one thing that we Americans are taught when driving vehicles with large front ends. Even the old 80's model Cadillacs, you used the hood ornament as a marker by driving with it on the right curb/road edge. Well done on getting that one quickly!!!

The "L" in w900L designates "Longer hood"...approximately 16" longer.. I know I drove one for a couple years...yes they are still in production...they are one of the most road worthy trucks out there for hauling the "Interstate" highways here in North America
@jimbojimson
@jimbojimson Жыл бұрын
Mostly right, but it's not 16" longer, it's 10" longer. A standard W900B has a bumper to back of cab length of 120", the W900L stretches that to 130". It also has a hood that slopes down a little, the B has a straight hood, and the L has a slightly narrower grille.

It took me 4 weeks to get my commercial driver's license, and after I got a job, it took another 9k miles (about 3 weeks of driving) to actually get comfortable behind the wheel, and that was with a trainer. Then the company provided me with my own truck and it took a bit of getting used to, and I'm still learning things about driving.

Squirrel, as an over the road truck driver for over 22 yrs, seeing the W900L intrigued me to watch this vid. A few points, the emblem for the KW is a front facing one, the chrome piece at the end of your "bonnet" is a grab handle to pull open the hood. It doesn't show in the mod, but there is a big red KW on the front of it. As to the physics in turning, long wheel base trucks do not have the body lean a Euro truck would have. Watching the vid I didn't see much wrong with the physics. Yes, cornering is very tricky, W9's are not known for a tight turning radius. As far as the skill set to drive a truck over the road properly, there's never enough time behind the wheel to learn everything. As I said, I drove for over 22 years, and if i wasn't learning something new every trip, I would have become dangerous. It's more of a skill set, I took to it naturally, behind the wheel of these big trucks, I was in my element. I enjoyed the KW purchase, don't sell it!! A few more trips and you'll grow to love that big bitch!!! (and stay out of the UK, those roads are soooo small!!)

*vid . Also, does the sim have a seat control? You're sitting too high up. W9 and 379 drivers sit all the way on the floor. Yes, it's disadvantageous but it looks cool; one of those old school things. Also that turbo sounds all wrong.

Nice video! I drove a KW W900 for about two years. Was hauling cross country here in the USA. But the company I drove it for went out of business and I got a Volvo to drive at my new company. I like the KW W900. Thanks for the video!

It's funny this should get recommended to me today, because I just traded in a W900L Long version (from a more recent mod) for a Scania R730. Also those tiny horns are actually really good, most of my trucks have had them.

i love how the first 15 minutes are nothing but you customizing your truck the way a girl would dress a barbie and then driving for a few seconds to admire the truck and get to the other paintjob place while going "Oh my god this is so big its like so very big. this truck is very massive i feel so small compared to this massivly massive big truck"

here is the US when we back up a Truck like the W900L-long we put the 4 way flashers of that helps by showing us where the trailer is and at night it helps the Driver see what is behind him, and it tells people that we are Backing-up

when your switching to hi/lo in each gear you don't need to pull it out of the gear to get to high gear. also you only need to engage the clutch when you are starting from a dead stop. already in real life, I've been driving trucks for years.

Before I start here I would like to say im 14, before you pass judgment and say I dont know anything cause of my age, my Pop has driven trucks for about 55 years, and my Dad has been for about 25 years, so yeah. Anyway getting on with it, this video was frustrating to me because bhp is measured differently to American and Australian trucks to European trucks, a European truck with 750 bhp, is equivilent to an American/Australian truck with 480 bhp (this isnt exact). In America/Australia bhp is measured under load, in europe trucks are not meazured in that way. Here in Australia we have something we like to call triple road trains, (3 trailers, 2 dollys) they are normally out west and are fully loaded with mining equipment (heavy shit). Normally thats all carried with kenworths with 480-600 bhp cummins engines in them. Then we have b-doubles which are our main highway trucks, you dont go anywhere without seeing one, these are just two trailers and a truck all together, fully loaded a b-double averages 68 tonnes, and thats just an average load weight for here in Australia, these loads are done by anything here really from 430 freightliners and up. Getting onto the size of this truck These W-models were really long prime movers, with shitty vision (as squirrel said) but the cabs were really small, you would be shoulder to shoulder with the passenger they weighed between 8 and 12 tonnes. just so you know nearly all Australian/American trucks come with an 18 speed road ranger gear box. Two last things, if you wanna see a massive truck with near to no frontal visibility look up a Kenworth T909, its bonnet is that tall you cant see anything for about ten-twenty meters out of the windscreen. And last look up a picture of a triple road train.
