Someone I know smashed their face and broke a tooth last week, wearing a helmet. Helmets are great but most concussions are decelerative, not direct head hits. The real answer is to pay attention and not make avoidable mistakes. All the equipment in the world means nothing if you’re making bad decisions. I fancy my chances skating without a helmet (sometimes) and feeling fragile/exposed, over those who think helmet use makes them immune to the laws of physics.

@smol_hornet6132 ай бұрын
Personally, I tend to value wrist guards well below both knee and elbow guards. Reason being: you can't entirely rely on wristguards to take impacts. If you drop straight onto your knees wearing knee guards, you'll probably come out with a slight bruise. If you drop straight onto your palms wearing wrist guards, you may very well break your wrist out-right.
@DarkestNight992 ай бұрын
@@smol_hornet613 If you drop right on your wrists without wrist guards you will probably break them too, though. If I’m in that kind of situation I’m already pretty fucked. They’re more for minor stuff & presenting palms from roadburn

Holy crap. I’m so glad you’re alive after that, lol 😮💨. I know that style of skating is your brand, but still.. talented and practiced athletes, such as yourself, should protect themselves. Surely, skating like this is an apparent risk/choice/preference, but that lack of basic protection in your content will encourage others to ignore things like helmets/pads. Ego will almost always prefer appearance over safety; especially for younger skaters. Set the right example and try a helmet for at least one video! also, this was a failure of the mind, and the LACK of padding lol

omg, just get yourself a helmet. no-one cares how you look. no one is stressing about how cool you are. We care about your skills, and your safety. No amount of skill can protect you from mechanical failure. What would happen if you suddenly broke a frame bolt, and one frame is flopping around on the boot? A single bolt failure makes a whole skate inoperable. No amount of skill can prevent that, and i'd bet you couldn't adapt fast enough to skate on only one foot and come to a safe stop in all conditions. just wear a helmet, it's really not a big deal

I was longboarding the last curb outside my dorm and hit a piece that extended out with the ramp to the road, like the side of the sidewalk but turned at a right angle an continued for a foot and a half and just stopped, squared off. While it was in the middle of two slopped, smooth surfaces (the sidewalk exit and the parking lot) it was dusk cuz it was the end of my ride and I didn’t see it. I forgot it was that way or never noticed to remember and after that I remembered, always looked out for random objects in the way of transitions. I fell into a parked car, after crossing into an oncoming vehicle I had to avoid falling in front of cuz a lady was walking across the road and watched me skate down the hill. She stopped going forward so I couldn’t go behind her and was I adjusted to go in front of her my back right wheel went onto the sidewalk cuz it hit the ramp and as my back wheel fell onto the road I was using one foot to balance cuz my board power slid one way and I had to torque it with one foot just enough to correct and power slide the other way but then it just kicked out from under me and I couldn’t correct out of it. I ran out a few feet into the ground and slid into the car. The lady would have saved me if she wouldn’t have let herself have the right way for a down hill longboarder to work out what to do rather than waiting for them to pass and not putting yourself in that situation. She just walked by and asked if I was okay quickly while still walking on the other side of the road and I humbly said yes I’m fine and she kept going. Nothing more than a sorry maybe but it didn’t matter to me. I risked my life to not tackle her when she did that to me for lack of understanding and safety. Just don’t step out in front of people and expect them to handle it cuz it’s their problem. No need to do that. If you don’t know how to maintain your own safety and freeze when you put yourself in a situation you’re trying to process and know it’s unsafe. Then don’t make others handle your mistakes. I skate for my own sake and never let myself hurt others if it means I’ll survive cuz they didn’t ask for me to skate. But I have no where else. At least respect that I go out of my way to make it easier for pedestrians and motorists while they don’t like me cuz I am skating and it’s harder to know what to do and avoid issues for me. If we had infrastructure for cyclists then we would be able to safely do skate and bike away from traffic and those walking would understand the rules of the paths.
