People should not get so butthurt over how things USED to be. Consider this: Sideshow freaks at least had something to do, a place to be, where they were cared for, where they were appreciated for their differences, and where they actually performed some useful function. In fact, they WERE entertainers and enjoyed some measure of celebrity as a result. That's hardly the worst way to scrape out a living. (Is entertainment NOT useful in society?) If it weren't for these venues, these "freaks" might have been stuck living in some primitive version of a mental hospital for their entire lives, and there is no way that that would be a preferrable way to live their lives. If I had an arm growing out of my forehead I'd try to use it to rake in all the cash the market would bear. Laugh and point, but don't forget to throw your money at me.

Not always true. Its sad only thinking about it, but for every one honorable, big circus, there were thousand others who misstreated and took advanteg over such peoples. I generaly agree, vut lets not get carried away should we?

Rather tour in a circus/carnival with friends, and people that look out for you than be put in an institution from early age and live a pretty horrible life. Shit, the more I think about it Schlitzie's life was more adventurous and maybe fun than a lot of ours! I hope it was anyway.
@cardigansarecool5 жыл бұрын
But they weren’t always appreciated and cared for. Lots of the “freaks” in this movie had extremely tragic stories. I agree that at the time being entertainers was much better than them being locked away or worse, but let’s not pretend that most of these performers were not abused and exploited by managers and society at large. That’s just fact.

People have always been offended by this film, for good reasons and bad reasons. Honestly, I think these defects should be known about and shown. Educate people and maybe just maybe "normal" people might relearn empathy. Their is very little that separates any of us from a random genetic "chance" that would lead to this or any other handicap. Few things are worse then forgetting the ones that didn't place even in the genetic lottery. We bitch and moan about those that won out due to rich parents, great genetics etc etc. Funny how we forgot about those that didn't have a shot in that lottery at all due to no fault of their own. Funny......sad.
@trinelangohr66618 жыл бұрын
+Erlyk Dalkien Yeah, I think so too. I mean - what ever the shape, people are people. If you get offended or disgusted by looking at people with genetic deformities (or people who had horrible accidents), you need to start asking yourself the hard questions. It's usually a mix of ignorance and thoughtlessness. Nowadays, thanks to modern medicine, a lot more children with genetic diabilities will be born alive, and reach an old age. Western societies will simply HAVE to deal with them, and learn to react normally.
@dhoffman49947 жыл бұрын

Well-known American sideshow performer and actor, best known as Schlitzie Surtees for his role in the movie Freaks, was possibly born under the name of Simon Metz in the New York’s community Bronx in 1901. According to other rather “mystical” sources, he was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Maybe that’s why many of the circus posters billed Schlitze under the title “The Last of the Aztecs”.

Schlitzie had the mentality of a three year old. Had he not been able to "earn" a living doing vaudeville, sideshows, etc., he would have been institutionalized as "retarded" or "mentally defective". In fact, later in his life, he was put in an institution for a short time, and nearly died, as he enjoyed performing. He was eventually put back on the stage and was happy. So while you may think it's "exploitation", the alternative would have been a life institutionalized in a horrible place.
