It is good practice to not attach your hook to the cable. It is a sure method of creating chafing and ultimately the breaking of the cable. A choker cable is a cable specifically for encircling the log, which often has a bit of chain attached that you then connect to your winch hook. I typically use a 6 to 10 foot chain for my dragging purposes. One other thing, and I suppose you have likely figured this out already, but winches have free spooling, which disengages the winch spool from the gears. This allows the cable to be quickly and easily pulled out to your desired length.

@@ColinFisher I had neighbors that were constantly chaffing, kinking and breaking their steel cables on their winch. Finally they pulled it all out, replaced it and then figured it out. I got to keep the remaining cable and use it to hang steel targets for my pistol shooting. Look into chains, shackles (metal and soft), pulleys, snatch blocks, tow ropes, tree savers, etc. Winches are a key recovery and essential tool for skidding yourself or other objects out from difficult situations. However winches are only the one of several components required for getting the job done safely, correctly, and in some cases successfully.
