Getting getting transformers is a major problem from Ohio to the central and southern plains. So glad you’re getting such fantastic yields to help cash flow!! I’ve never seen anyone get 300+ bushels/acre!

Ethan, the word you were looking for is "blessed". You and your family have had a lot to be thankful for over the past 2-3 years. Remember that every year has it's own challenges and some years are just bad. We all eventually have years that scare the bejezzus out of us. Hope you and the family have the best of Christmas's and a good 2024! For future reference, your local REMC should be able to rent you a large generator unless your area has had a disaster.

good for you !!!!!! lot of people do not realize how much work there is to farm - any amount of farming , i worked in automotive as a welding engineer and manufacturing engineer around robots most of my career all after a a 20 yr time in navy , and i have to say that being back to my roots on farms is what i should done long time ago - i grew up on a farm in mid west ohio - and thought i would continue to be a farmer but other things came about and i went and saw the world , but again getting back to my roots is good , you need to understand not too many people get to do what their dreams are - so hang in there , i have to run over to crane weapons maybe i will look for your farm - but will not intrude on you

One consideration, older gen set would have green antifreeze. If the Glenn set “techs” put red antifreeze, it will turn it into mud.

I run a pto generator with 100 hp tractor to run 4 7 hp single phase motors and it might be an option in an emergency. Merry Christmas to you and your family

You can pick up a phase converter for around $3,000 and within two weeks it will have paid for itself compared to running a generator setup.

I am still praying you get the transformer for Christmas, but in the mean time we would love to hear if you were able to stabilize/cool/slightly dry the corn in your new bins. Crazy stressful I am sure. I heard transformers are running crazy three year out delivery for some.

Hi Ethan, for a temporary solution to run your bin sight instead of spending money for running a generator, why not buy a single phase to three phase (110v to 220v) phase converter? Hell of alot cheaper. As long as you have 110 volt access, you can use the phase converter.

I don't think that would be enough power. Each bin has 2 fans that are 20-30 hp each. Usually they run on 3 phase (480v), but even if they run on 220v you wouldn't create enough power from a 110v source.

Well, we have a bin sight that we run 2 bin fans, a batch corn dryer as well as an electric transfer auger from one. @@nefarmer

I just hope that your corn is OK with this jury rig to make that generator produce electricity but I doubt that you can be sure of that for at least some time. Just absolutely the very best wishes chap! Regards Dan

I pray the local electric utility comes across transformer and you receive an early Christmas present with power to your bins leaving the generator as back up.

Well done, we have 40 years more experience than you do, and nothing beats me up harder than drying and storage of corn. When done right the rewards will build a farm. But the what ifs will play hell with your mind

When you built the new bins, why on earth didn't you buy a new generator? Buying a 25 year old generator is a recipe for disaster unless you've got excellent provenance and all the maintenance records on it. You have 200K worth of grain in those bins that might go south. I know farming is a tough gig and it requires constant investment, but without a transformer, a new genrator would have been mission critical in light of the fact that you've got such a beautiful bin setup already. I know, hindsight is 20/20, but this should be a good learning lesson for you. Also, when you hire someone to do all that work on a generator, make sure to have someone watch to make sure they do what they said they were gonna do. Sadly, too many service related companies do rally shabby work these days. PS, your guys may have done everything right, but the age of the generator and the fact that the previous owners water cooled it may be a huge problem?? WHo cools a generator with water, seriously. It's a recipe for rust quickly. Hope it all works out man, you;ve got your heart and soul into this deal. All the best
