You know how you sometimes get a strong desire to attach things to your vehicle dashboard with cheap double sided tape?
Solar powered things that have a chemical disk in them with a nondescript aroma?
And when the sun shines on it, it starts spinning and vibrating at high speed while you're trying to concentrate on the road?
Well here it is. You're welcome.
eBay search keywords are solar power car aroma.
On a plus note, it does have a nice solar panel and motor, although it would probably be cheaper to buy them individually.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

The fact that light from an led keychain was enough to get the motor spinning so fast with such a small solar panel is pretty astounding honestly. Like how much power would that little LED use and how much of it would be transferred to the panel in order to get it to spin so fast and with probably a fair amount of mass.

Just because LEDs are low wattage does not mean they aren't letting out a high amount of light. Keep in mind that incandescent was just incredibly inefficient. That motor only probably needs a few milliamps at most. Also the room is pretty bright which helps a lot

There's very little load on the motor. They use a tiny little motor made to run at about 1v. Same design as those solar powered car ventilation fans you hang on the window.

@@friedtomatoes4946 also leds are actually pretty damn efficient low on their power curve, even though they are still pretty efficient compared to alternatives, led lamps are run on the worst end of their efficiency (which also means they last less, you can see Clive's Dubai lamp vid for more on that)

Terrahawks! Thankyou Clive for showing this wonderful optical illusion. One of my earliest memories of childhood watching TV was being mesmerized by this on Terrahawks; seemingly two chrome hoops endlessly circling upon each other in the background views of (quite scary villain) Zelda! It wasn't until years later I found out how simple a trick it was. But I've never seen it used again! Such a pleasant surprise to find it on here 👍 My compliments to all your videos you've taken time to do. Lots of geeky pink appreciation from me 😘

I thought it would be more complicated than that, like the solar turntable used in jewelry stores but I underestimated how simple and cheap they could make such things. Best car air-freshener I had was back in '93 - it went in the cigar-lighter socket and had two small plastic(?) brickets infused with an apple scent given off when heated. I used it in the taxi I was driving at the time and was often complemented on the pleasant atmosphere. And being on the autism spectrum (albeit I didn't know back then), I've always had a strong dislike of artificial air-fresheners, so that apple scent was obviously quality.

Well now, you have a solar cell to use for whatever you want. I recycle old electronics and one thing I am getting more and more of are the solar garden lights. The batteries go bad and either folks simply do not want to deal with them or they let it go too long and when they open to replace the battey, it is a mess of corrosion from a leaky battery. So, I collect the solar cells and make all sorts of chargers out of them. Almost have enough now to make at least a 50 watt 12 volt solar panel out of them. Something to think about, eh?

I fell for the false advertising and got one for its ability to keep the car snow and ice free. The instructions are 1: Open the top lid. 2: Take it out in the bag and put in the box. 3: Close it top lid. 4; Peel off protective film and hold it. Thanks to your video, I checked the box and found the scent ring in its pouch glued to thr bottom of the box and a loose piece of double sided tape. I actually bought my husband's brother battery-powered work gloves. His hands can't tolerate Finnish winters too well, even though the rest of him can, so he was exceedingly happy about the gift. The gloves work well and heat up pretty evenly all the way to the fingers, the batteries are just removable li-ion batteries and can be recharged from a regular USB-charger, so there's nothing much negative to say.
@goodun2974
@goodun2974 2 жыл бұрын
@@WereCatf there are dozens of brands and hundreds of models of battery-powered gloves on the market, and they're not cheap (often in the $150 to $200 range). The batteries vary a lot in terms of size, shape, weight, hours of operation on a charge, type of electrical disconnect used, and physical location on the back or gauntlet of the glove. Not to mention how the temperature controller works, and some appear way too complicated (in a harsh outdoor environment, complex often means failure prone). The reason I am so interested in this subject is because it appears I have developed Raynaud's syndrome where my fingers (especially my important right hand middle finger, darn it 🖕!) turn white and cold and go numb with exposure to low temperatures. .

Scanlime has done top tier reverse engineering on those. They span a resonant electric field which amplifies the received signal, and it isn't at all limited to the tip of the pen. The corresponding antenna is a dipole with one pole being at the tip and another being the chassis, so it spans that whole general volume starting at the bottom of the chassis and some around it, though it's a little difficult to visualise.

@@SianaGearz I've actually seen the video. While it was technically sound, I didn't understand a single sentence. Bigclive has a way of explaining things that is understandable my normies like me

Surprised you didn't refer to the motor as a CD drive tray motor, that's the place I most often saw that form factor, granted those had the tab terminals for soldering into a circuit board rather than the wires you'd see more typically in things like tape players.

They're entirely different. The spindle motor often isn't just soldered into the PCB, but built directly on it. The largest difference is electrical, this is a brushed DC motor, while optical drive spindle is a BLDC so it necessarily needs electronic switching and control circuit ahead of it.

@@SianaGearz You're correct about the spindle motor. For the tray it's often rack and pinion driven by that exact motor and some rubber belts.

@@knucklecorn Ah, i see, yes, i suppose. I don't remember what the tray motor looks like, i guess i saw several different ones and didn't care about them, but by all reason they've got to be using brushed DC motors there.

Based on its appearance? The design constraints for a cd player dont require a motor that will run on half a volt at a tenth of an amp.

I might get one of these to put on my windowsill. (without the smelly stuff). It will amuse the cat for hours. :)

well you could always put a resister in to slow it down and have it as a décor

Interesting. Would there be a way to make it run slower and more consistently? Maybe using a large capacitor and a resistor or an LDO regulator? I think it would look nice as just general window tat rotating slowly. Kinda like the ones you mentioned in the jewellers? :)

At low torques, I think that motor will remain pretty inconsistent because ultimately there is no speed regulation other than friction. Some sort of mechanical speed governor maybe? One drastic option is to switch to a brushless motor (like a computer fan) that has a very low rpm

Hi Clive, can you teardown and reverse engineer an Osram AirZing car air purifier? You can find them for sale at Morgan Computers in the tech & gadgets section for £19.95. It would be interesting to see what Osram knows about air purification.

I would love it if you checked out those super cheap and thin heated insoles for shoes. They look interesting and potentially dangerous lol im curious what you'd have to say about them.

I first saw that design of the two connected rings spinning in the Christopher Reeves Superman where General Zod and co were stood waiting to be imprisoned in the 2D glass square thing - The Phantom Zone lol 🤔😏 (When I was younger, Sarah Douglas as Ursa was God damned sexy as hell in her makeup and outfit. And since Antje Traue looked equally as tidy in her version in Man of Steel) 😎🇬🇧

Motor looks a lot like the size you get out of cd drive eject mechanism , Also i dont think anyone would want to put this on their car dash as during a high sunny day it would potentially reflect sun off its spiny surfaces in every direction eye blindy/distractions.
