Moonshine vs Sodastream - with SCIENCE!

Having already discovered that white wine takes twice as much carbonation as water, I thought I'd push it to the max and try carbonating 140-proof moonshine. (Highest I could get.)
The results were very surprising and even came with a bit of cryo-fog. Then I decided to taste-test it, and that's when things went wrong. But if you want to sanitise your hands or clean your PCBs with fizzy solvent it's perfect.
To get the "proof" of a spirit just double the alcohol percentage - it's the "peak music power" of the drinks industry.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of KZfaq's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

In the United States real moonshine sometimes comes in a gallon jug that says "distilled water" or "purified water". It's part of the recycle reuse initiative. ♻️ They carry water into the woods in the same jug they smuggle the moonshine out.

is moonshine still illegal in much of the states? In my country of New Zealand, you can make your own alcohol and distil for personal use, can't sell it.
@D4no00

@@A.Martin We have a bunch of stuff on the market called moonshine for marketing purposes. It isn't really moonshine though. I often here people say you can distill it in the states legally for personal use(drinking) but those people can never cite a law. They make unfounded claims. The only real legal personal use exception in the US is for fuel on a farm and that involves a lot of paperwork.
@matthewjbauer1990
@matthewjbauer1990 Жыл бұрын
@@A.Martin In the US, it is still very much illegal to distill at home. Only registered/licensed distilleries can distill. The average person at home is only permitted to brew beer or make wine. The US government says that home distilling is illegal because there are the risk of explosion and the risk of creating toxic methanol. However, some people claim that most people making moonshine are safe and its just the government wanting to collect their taxes from the sale of distilled spirits.
@mapu1
@mapu1 Жыл бұрын
@@matthewjbauer1990 I mean if you are really stupid and remove safeties you can blow up distillation apparatus, but as long as you know what you are doing, you are not really at more risk than like boiling a kettle of water on a campfire. You can create steam explosion if you plug up the holes and over boil it, but at that point you have to be trying to fuck up that badly. The real issue with moon shining is drunk people around fire. As for methanol, they sell methanol, and you can use it to clean things and stuff. Hand sanitizer is made from it for example. And you can just buy a tester for it if you are worried.

not many people like or even drink straight 100 proof or higher, anything above that is very harsh on your mouth/throat/body. also remember alcohol is very hygroscopic and will instantly absorb any moisture you have within your mouth and digestive tract(until diluted down to lesser content). so chaser chaser chaser galore! my own limit is 151 rum and that's only special occasions(one small bottle in the last 10+ years), the rest is just too harsh without being mixed/diluted and it's all best suited for cooking/flaming dishes and flavoring. lol

That's incredible. If a full litre of moonshine takes 22g of CO2 then at room pressure and temperature the same weight of gas would occupy 11.2 litres. It seems a bit high, but I guess the gaseous form contains a lot of empty space between molecules whereas the liquid doesn't. With hindsight, it would be interesting to know how much the volume (or height in the bottle) of the liquid increased with all of that CO2 in it. Great job Clive, I can't think of anyone else who would think of that experiment and perform it so skilfully. And I'm a scientist/engineer.....

@@bigclivedotcom if using the alcohol content to categorize each liquor, then it gets very muddy. There are high proof rum's and vodka's, so does that make those moonshine? It's the ingredients that matter the most. Authentic shine is known as 'corn likker' to the redneck's in Kentucky. Now the question is what are the others? Vodka seems to use corn, wheat, and/or potatoes in the mash. Rum is made from sugar cane and/or molasses. Since every item used in a recipe can alter the flavors, I think these are the biggest factors in classifying alcohol, not the alcohol level itself.

3 grams of CO2 in a half liter of water is pretty close to what i've noticed at home too. I tried to figure out if getting more farts from the release valve increases the carbolation level and after a couple of farts, it doesn't. Or at least my kitchen scale is not sensitive enough to measure the difference (1 gram nominally).

Splendid. I always didn't want to that anyway. Now you can spritz your boards without a pump sprayer. Good luck!

I think this will be the last of sodastream video I watch in public well they could not hear it but I had a few looking at me as if I lost the plot when I burst out laughing at Clive when he spat out the moonshine. Thank you for your videos and taking time to do them.

Traditional Moonshine will include a measure of leftover methanol from bad distillation. Thus carbonation tests are also needed for pure methanol, pure propanol and pure isopropanolol.

This be a very nice experiment! Even though the very smell of moonshine makes me look for more "official" options...

I foresee this being quite dangerous if you could swallow it. The CO2 will force the exit sphincter of the stomach to spasm open, and dump the stomach contents into the small intestine, where alcohol is absorbed rapidly. (This is why people can be drinking champagne for some time, and then very abruptly go from quite mildly affected to sloppy drunk. Now imagine the same effect with 140 proof vodka.) And I think that's the most dramatic response we've seen to Clive sipping something since that time he decided to find out what denatured spirits taste like, although that also took longer. (He didn't spit it out until the bitter additive fought it's way through the alcohol that was probably dissolving his tongue.)
