there were numerous bands trying to get a proper bagpipe drone guitar sound back then -- Big Country was the only one to perfect it, while U2 took it in a different direction -- Tears For Fears, The Call, & The Alarm were also experimenting with it

I was 14 in 1982. My dad took off that year and we plunged into poverty. My teen years were all about working after school jobs to keep us afloat. I was suicidal much of the time. Hearing this helped me through my brother's suicida attempts as well. Now I'm in my 50"s and still love the song.

Stuart, who had previously experienced drinking problems, started drinking again after having been sober for over a decade. After going missing, he was found dead in a hotel room in Hawaii. According to a local police report, he had died hanging himself with an electrical cord from a pole in a wardrobe. DO NOT DRINK! I also had these same issues. I quit for good in 2012. Not a wee drop since! I would also be dead from my binge drinking if i didnt stop. True facts!

I was born in 92. When my dad found out that I listened to emo music, he made me listen to this because it's "the opposite of that crap about suicide and breakups". It is a really good song and is more timeless than a lot of the stuff I grew up with.

I've been looking for this song for over 25 years. Alast, my search has ended and finally this 25 year old earworm can go to rest. I just heard it on the radio one day back in the early 90's as a teenager while travelling in a car way before internet and cell phones were a thing and never heard it again. I could remember it perfectly, exactly where I was, the time of day, the street I was on as if it were yesterday. Sadly all I remembered about the song was a 5 second bagpipe rift which I'm now understanding wasn't bagpipes at all. Just that 5 second rift haunted me every day since. For years I searched and searched for 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's songs with bagpipes to no avail until eventually I forget about it. Recently I started getting back to some classic 80's tracks and just happened to come across it just now. Like a long lost dog that came home or that last piece of puzzle you never found. Now I feel complete. I'll never forget this feeling.

Born Feb 18, 1980. I was a teen in the 90s, the height of grunge, I still listened to the 80s. It will be remembered as a pinnacle of artistry in music. It was the culmination of the late 60s, feeding the early 70s, the labels got so over the top, they went disco, which was a very short lived genre. Going into the 80d they realized dance music was a hit, but synthesizers were the answer . Usher in the greatest decade of music. Then grunge killed the record industry.

Bullshit...only big country wanted a bagpipe guitar sound as it suited their Scottish culture and the ethos of a sound of the big open Scottish landscape...u2 only used a real bagpipe in the song "Tomorrow" and they weren't even the ultraload mouth blown marching band pipes...but native Irish elbow bag powered uilean pipes used for traditional Irish cielle sessions and standard pub and stage venue performances
@Maguirearch
@Maguirearch 3 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify that all those other bands weren't Scottish bands or Irish Gaelic inspired bands...U2 are more an international everyman's band than an Irish nationalistic band...bono is against nationalism anyway....the alarm were Welsh..they don't do bagpipes in Wales and the other bands you mention are all English....
@Tarantulisimo
@Tarantulisimo 3 жыл бұрын
@@Maguirearch thank you for the clarification -- but i was referring more to the experimentation with the sound than to these band's heritages, & wasn't trying to delve that deeply into the origins as much as simply into the use of the sound. Obviously, Scottish or Irish bands would be more prone to use a bagpipe sounding guitar or keyboard drone, but non-Scottish & non-Gaelic bands & groups have used actual bagpipes or bagpipe-like sounds in their music

One of my favourite songs as a teen, I had this posted on my wall, I loved this part of the song. I'm not expecting to grow flowers in a desert But I can live and breathe And see the sun in wintertime

One of my favorite songs as a 27 yr old. I've lived in t/Mojave Desert for 48 of my 60 yrs, and Yeppers, I do "grow flowers in the desert"; a great metaphor, and literal quote. Growing flowers in the desert is an unbelievable challenge. If the freezing nights, burning long summers, or desert squirrels don't take out those flowers, the 60 mph winds, and flash floods followed by wildfires will. :-) Breathing in the desert of Mojave is as bad for ones lungs, as living next to LAX or a major airport, due to a high volume of dust in the air. However, while the rest of the nation goes thru a deep freeze during winter, one can get a suntan in these S.W. deserts.

I was a huge fan of Big Country, they were a wonderful high energy unique wall of sound that most people in the US seemed uninterested in the early 1980s. The death of Stuart Adamson in 2000 was heartbreaking, I had gotten sober 7 year before and it was so sad that this talented man struggle so hard until he took his own life. Stuart I know some of your pain and I like to think that you and the Big Country kept me alive long enough to overcome my addiction. Peace to you and my the Lord heal the hearts of those you left behind. We we will all see each other in the future.
