A look at my very first 1/100 scale model, the so-called "No Grade" (not Master/MG) Kyrios from season 1 of Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Only my 3rd model. I am a newbie, enjoying entering the hobby at my own pace!

As a long time fan of Lego, Gundam, and your channel, I'm so excited that you're exploring Gunpla. I'd highly recommend checking out the first season of Gundam Build Fighters. On top of having a decent plot, throughout the show it also explains the basics of Gunpla. There are some inside jokes and Gundam memes scattered throughout the show, but they'll make more sense the more you explore Gundam stuff. There's also the Gundam wiki if you wanna check out the background or the specs of the Mobile Suit you just built, although there is the risk of spoilers if you decide to do that.

Gunpla model kits are so well done, even the "bad" ones are more than decent.

Deeply relieving to see you get into this hobby, as I did a year or two ago, and hear your thought processes be similar to my own - especially how crushing minor mistakes can feel, even when you know you're learning from them. I managed to find out what works for me is that I really like using a specialised glass file (the "raser") for most nub sanding on flat parts and just being very careful with a hobby knife on more rounded surfaces (along with using a pair of high grade nippers). I like to panel line as I go, do a very small amount of extra detail painting (usually a little grey or black in recesses, occasionally some primary or other bright colors for highlights - just to fill in bits that they couldn't make enough color separated parts for), and then I really, really like a clear matte top coat (my fav is Tamiya... unsurprisingly...) both to preserve the panel lining and flatten the naturally too-glossy plastic. I prefer UC models, as I'm a big fan of Tomino and YAS, and they look pretty great with that soft, textured, matte finish. I'm curious if over the last few months, you've found what process works best for you or are still growing. My love for Gundam is very much fueled by the nuanced storytelling about the horrifying inevitability of conflict and the ethics of why one fights (justice, survival, cultural preservation, etc.). People call it anti-war, though I think it more understands it as a complex social phenomenon, an eruptive force that must be reckoned with at great tragedy. It avoids a lot of boring hero/villain dichotomizing and has extremely complex motivations for its antagonists and sympathy for both sides of a conflict. However, I also really love some of the cartooning (particularly YAS' character designs and linework/storyboarding/animation direction for the early stuff) and just plainly love a lot of the robots, here and there, too. I wish Mamoru Nagano had gotten to design more, but there are still many mechanical designers I love a lot, especially those who marry cartooning's preference for readable profiles and rounded lines with the sheerly geometric oppression of "Mecha." I veer more away from interest in military stuff as I grow older, especially uncritical depictions of war, but I'll always love Gundam. Sorry for WALL OF TEXT, down here, especially one you'll probably not read. But, ah. A-anyway, take care, Jang!

I recently grew out of Lego slightly and have been more into collecting action figures and Gundams are one of the things I collect that scratches my construction itch so im very glad your making videos on Gunpla Jang, I think the MG kits will be impressive if you liked this.

A very interesting opinion about the kit, but definitely a valid one. For me, the reason on why to get this kit is minimal since an MG version now exist, with a better colour than the cheese orange we got here, speaking subjectively. As with HGs, one of the main point of why it is popular is because of the compatibility between kits, especially in the recent years. I recommend checking out the HGCE Gundam Seed line like the Aile Strike, Freedom, and the Infinite Justice. Really solid kits. This technology on this line definitely gets better as time progresses.

While Master Grades are always a pleasure to build, there's just something about No Grade 1/100 scale kits from the early 2000's to the 2010's that seem like a great "in-between" spot for people who want larger kits with mildly better articulation and/or gimmicks (depending on the individual kit and the line it was from), but also didn't want to spend the amount that a Master Grade would cost. And I think they also fit a unique niche that exists between HG and MG kits, that being a somewhat more durable and play-friendly kit that Sadly, since no grades don't seem to get reprinted as often as graded kits (like High Grades, Master Grades, etc...) they can be quite hard to find, and that also invites sadly inflated prices for them when you DO find them as well. Sometimes, the prices can be high enough that you may as well just get the Master Grade. Unless it's one that DOESN'T have a Master Grade yet (Saviour Gundam from MSG SEED Destiny, my beloved), in which case that No Grade is the only 1/100 option available. That being said, when you can find a No Grade 1/100 scale kit from that time period at a price that's within your budget range, and it's one that you find interesting, I'd always recommend getting it.

As a builder it is nice to get more recognition, however this hobby can get so expensive over time and it is hard to find good kits at fair price in the US.
@JackindaSack2 жыл бұрын
it used to be so much more affordable back before the pandemic, it was never super cheap but like most HGs never peaked over 20 usd. Its a sad state of affairs. I feel bad for people getting into it now.
@brunocorrea28542 жыл бұрын
I believe it is getting better over there? Especially with the US exclusive releases recently.
@BioGoji-zm5ph Жыл бұрын
I think it was sometime last year that Bandai issued a new policy that enforced fairer prices for Gunpla from official and major sellers to crack down on scalping and artificial inflation of kit prices. A lot of kits nowadays are much less costly than they were during the Covid Pandemic, although that mostly applies to kits that are frequently reprinted, as older kits that aren't as common can still fetch some rather absurd prices depending on where you find them.

Thx for getting me 2 a new "Addiction" next to my Lego hobby (obsession) Haha... Bought an 78-2 Real Grade and OMG i loved it.... next day i ordered 2 MG 1/100 kits and 1 HG Baratos kit... Just finished my first MG 1/100 GX-9901-DX Double X and must say very nice! when i'm done with the other 2 i will try a Perfect grade. Sadly they are still kinda small but detail is very nice, i would recommend to get atleast a gundam panal-liner for your kits. Hope to see you build some more when you have the time and offcourse review them:P Cheers Rex.

When you finally get to Master Grade kits, you are going to love them. Almost all the modern master grades are incredible, including the MG Kyrios! I know you said you're trying to differentiate your collection, but it would be cool to see your thoughts comparing the No-Grade and the Master Grade as someone who is newer to the hobby. As always, keep up the good work!!

No grades will always not be perfect,they are basically big high grades,also something useful is to choose kits after 2010 if you want something that is good

I like HG or this or Mega or anything of that level of detail -- perfect for me since I work 7 days/week & can't dedicate countless hours to a new hobby!

I like No Grade 1/100 kits because their simpler builds can actually make them a bit sturdier and/or more rough play-friendly than the more intricate Master Grades, depending on the kit and the line it's from. Like if you drop an NG 1/100 kit by accident, it's probably a bit more capable of handling the impact than the average Master Grade, since the No Grade would have less small parts to worry about. Usually.

im telling you man when you go to master grades your gonna lose your mind! you should also really check out some of the newer real grades they are in someways better then MG.

as some one who has built multiple MG transformable ones, but never transformed them i'm thinking it's pretty okay, it's not like the Zeta V2.0 or the ReZel's which i kind of own every singular variation of lol. i'm looking forward to your Char's custom Zaku II HG

Those lilac rubber pieces are actually there for lore reasons! They're basically power cables that transport GN particles to the condensers in the arms and legs (which iirc are required for the gundams to move in 00? It's been a while since I've watched it lol). They're actually supposed to be translucent blue, but only the MGs have enough budget to use the thick vinyl that requires, plus the lilac rubber is arguably more animation accurate so it's down to taste really.

I love Gundam, but it has terrible transforming 'planes.' Look at the Flag and Enact lines from 00, they are transforming fighter jets and none of them look aerodynamic.
@theJANG Жыл бұрын
Wholeheartedly agree. Gundam was forced to do transformation stuff early on to try to sell toys and it was not at all successful even though they beat Diaclone to the punch. They should have left the concept alone if they weren't going to be able to do it better, but they had to *try* to get some of that later Transformers money. When it still didn't work, they again should have let it go LOL
