Dave, the guy at the beginning of the video, coming out the tunnel, is an Eagles Hall of Fame player, BRIAN DAWKINS! He's considered one of our greatest players ever! He's a comic book fan, his favorite character is Wolverine. What you saw is his 'trademark' entrance to the field, where he revs himself and the whole stadium by becoming Wolverine! He was a fearless, unrelenting defense player, and is much loved to this day!

One of the hits you paused the video to talk about was Ronnie Lott. He broke his left pinky finger in the last game of the regular season against the Dallas Cowboys in December of 1985. No way Ronnie Lott, the hard-hitting defensive back and staple in San Francisco's backfield during their four Super Bowl championships in the 1980s, was going to let the hand injury keep him off the field in the playoff game against the New York Giants. So, Lott faced a decision from doctors: put a pin in his finger and a cast over it and wait eight weeks for it to heal, or amputate part of the finger off from the first joint up and be able to play right away. Sure enough, Lott picked option B, amputation, and parted ways with his pinky. Doctors numbed it, sliced it off and put it in a cast. One week later, Lott was back in action in the 49ers' 17-3 loss to the Giants, which eliminated them from the postseason. He lost the finger AND the game! That's hardcore.

Broken is a tad bit of an understatement. His hand had gotten in between the helmet of another player and the chest plate of his shoulder pads during a hit. Only the tip of his finger was caught, and it ejected the bone from the very last knuckle to the end of his finger like popping a zit.

18:27 I don't know if it has been explained already, but in football the coaches teach you the lower man wins. Say a ball carrier and defender are heading for each other. Usually the one who has gotten lower first wins the exchange. They will always tell you to have a low center of gravity. Speed and strength are important, but it won't help if you go high and the opponent goes low and puts his shoulder in your chest or stomach. Hopefully this somewhat helps you guys understand.

The idea behind the hits Dave was talking about around the 9:20 mark,( just running through the ball carrier rather than a form tackle) Is to physically by force separate the ball from the ball carrier

Sometimes defensive players do aim to deliver hits to take players out of the game, it’s frowned upon, but the Saints had a controversy that they called bountygate where the defensive coordinator was paying players extra money to take people out. Might make a good reaction if there are any videos on KZfaq about it.

OB Mike was right about pass interference. As soon as the receiver makes contact with the ball he's fair game as long as you don't hit them in the head. (years ago you could hit to the head but not anymore).
@robertfanion2815
@robertfanion2815 Жыл бұрын
Pass interference is only applicable before the receiver TOUCHES the ball. Once he touches it you can do anything to him (that isn't against an applicable hitting or tackling rule i.e. hitting to the head) to get him to not complete the catch.
@stevensorrell1625
@stevensorrell1625 Жыл бұрын
There is a judgement call for either interference (offensive or defensive player) as well there is a judgment if a ball was uncatchable, too far over the receiver's head or way to the left or right. The referees may not bother if the receiver was interfered with.

The guy that was running strange was a punter. And that's pretty much all you need to know to explain it...lol. he doesn't run, block, tackle, or score. His job is to just kick a ball and then go sit back down. So on there rare play he's forced to do something else, he ends up looking like an Office Bloke out there 😆😆

10:59 A defender is allowed to disrupt a player from catching the ball by getting in the way. As long as they are making a play on the ball, it's considered legal. The clip you guys saw is old and that rule has since been changed or altered. Previously you could block a receiver by running into him as he's trying to catch the ball but you can't do that anymore. That's considered attacking a defenseless receiver because he cannot protect himself and catch the ball at the same time. However, you can push him out of the way, bat the ball down or put your body in the way, which are all considered making a play on the ball and there are a lot of questionable things players can do with these new loose guidelines, so you can imagine what is considered making a play on the ball these days, but that clip you guys saw is a penalty now.

In the NFL the rule is that as soon as the ball hits the hands the defender can hit them. It’s why players hated running a route that took them across the middle of the field for a pass. If they have to jump to catch and defenders are in a zone defense they will just get walloped. However, to combat things like the play at around 10:28 the NFL has started calling “unnecessary roughness”penalties if defenders violently hit receivers that are in a defenseless position making a catch.

Those to be admired in this video are those who took a hit and still held on to the ball. Many were probably concussed. It's easy to hit someone that's focusing on catching a ball.

Before 1970 most defensive players were taught to use their arms and wrap up the runner as a tackle. Beginning after 1970 more and more players started using the missle-launch method of tackling which can be effective but created a lot more injuries and a lot of missed tackles because if you don't knock the runner down, you are in no position to follow the play. I think it was a huge mistake that detracted from good defensive play for decades.
@ExTiNkT91

The guy at 4:00 that was running funny is a punter.. that's why lol At 11:00... the goal for the defender in that situation is to hit the offensive player right as the ball gets there, to knock the ball free and cause an incompletion. But the ball has to be touched by the WR first or at the same time as the hit. If the hit comes before the ball gets to the WR, it's a pass interference. So it's a timing thing.

For your question around 10mins 40secs on if that was a legal hit or not. Cornerbacks cover the wide receivers and often hand fight with the receiver but they cannot prevent the receiver from running their route. If the ball is thrown to the receiver and is "catchable" then they are not allowed to hold on to them or prevent them from getting their hands to the ball. It's open season to hit the receiver once they've made contact with the ball which is why corners and safeties time their hits for just after the ball gets there to disrupt their catch. That looked like a legal hit since the receiver touched it just before he got hit, that looked like an older clip but now they'd probably get a penalty for hitting a "defenseless" player in the head(targeting).

It should be pass interference if the defender makes contact to a receiver past 5 yards (or at least it used to be 5 yards not sure I think it still is) if the receiver hasn't touched the ball. However, contact is allowed when both players are going for the ball. But you can't just lay someone out before they touch the ball and the ball is in the air. Contact to a receiver when the defender is not making a play for the ball is pass interference. Among many other things like pushing off of them, or hooking their arm, or grabbing their jersey, horsecollar, etc. any contact before the receiver touches the ball that is not incidental and is not happening when the defender is also going for the ball.
