The Canning Stock Route in the Mid West region of WA is one of these tracks. It spans 1900 kms from Wiluna to Halls Creek and is arguably the most remote 4 wheel drive track in the world. If you’re a 4wd enthusiast in Australia, chances are this one is on your bucket list and you’re prepared to spend 10-20 days driving and camping in isolation to witness the breathtaking country side surrounding the track. Our group of 5 cars was aiming to complete this 10,000 KM journey in 4 weeks and we had been planning it for over a year. But things don’t always go to plan….
In this episode we visit Bilbunya Sand Dunes, Israelite bay & Esperance.

Man oh man I'm deflated now, I was explicitly watching these episodes unfold to see The Canning thru your channel. I'm guessing you lot were gutted, plus Dads flew over to be deprived of the experience of the Canning, so sorry for them as well as you young fellas. Bitter pill to cop, but I now know you were in for more deflation as whilst you were in Esperance when lisa hit, I was just shy of Curtain Springs, where we copped it big time, so I'm pre-empting in my head what happened to your re routed trip. Lets just say, my plans came to a stop also as yours did in the west. Won't spoil it for your followers, I'll wait for the future episodes. Either way, I'll enjoy it, whatever you get up to.

Coolest thing to do on a dune is to get to the top of a big one, put it in slow and surf down with the wave. You need a good sense of what the car needs to do to do this, but if you match the speed with the sand falling it's like floating.

Loving the videos. I'm getting serious FOMO. Just curious, you seem to be getting bogged a lot in the sand. What tyre pressures are you running? It's hard to tell but it looks to me your still at road pressures.

Hey man new subscriber here just wanted to know how you have rated the barra like many problems in term for offroading like overheating or anything?

Hey Dan, I had did have overheating problems but I swapped out the thermostat and put an oil cooler in. It still does get hot on a hot day in soft sand at a high sustained load but most cars will under that condition. It has honestly been awesome!!! I have had to iron out a lot of kinks but it is super bullet proof!

@@DesignedandBuilt yeah i though about a putting a barra in a ford ranger but yeah always wonder about the heat situation as i see so many people do ls swaps and just seemed that they are know for being hot so was wondering if the barra would be a maybe better option and they sound killer aswell ive had a fg falcon as my first car back in the day and still have it as its never had any issues, but would love to barra a ranger as i just dont like the newer 4x4 that are coming out want something with good power and fun and just to tow a ski up the beach ect

@Dan-yc6vi they are a good option. A lot of fun!! Maybe not the best on fuel etc but they can be reliable. Would be interesting to see how they make it 4wd! What transfer do they use, do you know?

@@DesignedandBuilt custom machine works is about to release a ZF to ranger/BT50 transfer. And AGT engineering does a CAN translator for them.

Guys, I really like your channel and have been subscribed since the start of your build but just one problem, FFS don't drive on the vegetation on the dunes. I'm not a Karen by any stretch of the imagination but it is the sort of irresponsible act that feeds the Karens of this world will result in loss of freedoms and access for all responsible 4 wheel drivers.

@@DesignedandBuilt Don't get me wrong, I have, do and no doubt will continue to thoroughly enjoy your channel and watching your growth in the offroad scene. It was more a cumulative niggle as I watched the series unfold. Ep 2:- 4:00, 11:00, 15:50 (Twilight Cove is a hard one as it is so widespread and where you want to be) Ep 3:- 3:36, 3:59, 4:24, 5:25. I think the edits may have been necessary in a couple of those. I fully understand how dynamic dunes are and a lot of the vegetation in some parts of systems has a life expetency of weeks but even the smallest patches have a very important role in slowing sand movement, preventing blow outs and impassable hollows on already established tracks. I also understand and fully identify with the human element having been guilty of many a thrash session in various dune systems in my HT Holden in the 70s and thereafter in various 4wds. Funnily enough all those systems are now closed off and revegetated into almost total stability 50 years later. I get that you are new to sand dunes and the fun and games to be had are an absolute joy and a source of skills to be learned, however the importance of guarding all vegetation in highly mobile largely pristine systems such as Bilbunya is going to be a key point in maintaining access as WA's DPAW and DBCA like nothing better than closing access in popular sensitive areas. The more remote and pristine the keener they seem. Continued good luck, safe travels, tread lightly, drop your tyre pressures even more and thankyou for the great content.

@@brucejohnson6398 Thanks Bruce, I want to protect the environment and ensure that future generations are able to see spots like Bilbunya. I'm also fully aware I'm in the public eye and the best thing to do is to lead by example. Cheers for the call out, I'll fix what I can and make sure it doesn't happen again. Tyre pressures were at 18, I might have to grab some bead locks for next trip!
