YESSSS I need a part 2 and 3 of this. So helpful to learn from someone who has gone through the process and has realistic expectations/budget for projects. So good to know about the painted cabinets and AC feature and retaining wall costs. AND FURNITURE. They need to start putting warnings in the description so people will know before buying that you need a full staff for maintenance 😂 I 10000% regret buying our couch. Not comfy and terrible fabric but we’re poor and didn’t know any better lol. I figure, keep it for a few years and I won’t feel bad getting a new one. Can’t wait for more pods!!

I am an interior designer and RH is so OVERPRICED for the product and quality. They are amazing at marketing, and making their stores an experience while you shop. You can get much higher quality custom furniture at the same price. I agree with a lot of the things you said, teak is a lot of work and maintenance, although it gives a great look. 😌

John , I’m a general contractor & do concrete work like retaining walls. I’m in Oregon and I’ll tell you right now we still have to be up to code & regulations. It’s just expensive because you are in California. Lol

DUDE I have an unfinished wood kitchen table too and my kids RUINED it because it soaks up everything. My husband fixed it by sanding it, and we’re gonna add some type of varnish or subtle coat to prevent anything from soaking in.

Hey Katy and Jon! Just a recommendation as far as layout. We have a 6,000 sq ft rambler style house like you described. If this is a future house, I’d definitely put the master on the first floor because as you get older, you might not want to or be able to walk up the steps. Our upstairs has a lounge area and large office space, as well as 4 large storage closets!

Girl! Shaker style is traditional- Shaker people are minimalist people. Modern is a whole different thing, more edgy. My husband is a professional traditional wood worker and carpenter, so we talk about these styles a lot. But so if you used both shaker and modern in the same sentence, the guy doing the work probably got confused about what look you were going for. Glad you guys have a podcast now though, I've been waiting for so long since you started your channel. This is awesome. Your house is gorgeous!

100% agree is DO NOT MARBLE GET QUARTZ! My dad remodeled our kitchen and one thing we knew and were recommended to get quartz over granite or marble! It’s pore-ress aka stains faster and will be very difficult to remove as well as it will scratch easier than quartz . Also DEFINITELY ASK QUESTIONS and BE INVOLVED! Don’t be afraid or shy, your paying them so ask or question what they are doing. Of with kindness and politeness! Also our cabinets were our BIGGEST REGRET! We got them from MENARDS and payed 5,000 on them but the quality SUCKED! After like 6 months the wood is chipping and the drawers feel like ikea drawers

Loved this episode! I love looking at houses out of our budget and dream of living there... I think you guys have a beautiful home... It takes a lot to remodel cudos to you guys for going through with it. I would love to build my own home... but it'll probably be to stressful for me... I remember when you guys had your room painted blue/grey - it was very farm style and I loved it but like I totally get that it wasn’t ur style and that you just loved the raw materials/colour palette. I’m definitely the same. Was legit looking at painting our living room a solid dark colour but might just invest in getting some dark elements and not fuck up my life 😂❤️

I’m dying about Joanna Gaines!! I actually read their book and they talked about why they don’t put TVs in the houses when they stage them. Has something to do with them never using one in their personal lives and feeling like it shouldn’t be a centerpiece to a design element or something like that. You knoowwwww all the families that move into those houses end up having TVs lol but the Gaines just don’t use them for staging

I got a ruggable and I'm never looking back because it's machine washable and my dog sheds like crazy... Definitely doesn't always look amazing after washing and drying and the corners eventually turn up but you can rebuy a top and change it out!

Retaining walls are expensive everywhere! I live in Kentucky and two years ago we paid a ridiculous amount of money for a retaining wall. It’s a very nice heavy duty retaining wall but I was shocked by the price of the wall compared to the size of the wall.

I'm am interior designer. And I promise you. We are worth every penny!! Almost every regret is preventable!

We are midway through decorating our first house and we currently have two walls half painted... aaaaannnnd they may or may not have been like that for a few months. That says everything you need to know for how well this process is going for us.✌🏼🖤💋

It’s not just LA it’s CA. When permitting retaining walls and getting legitimate permits from the City or County, the plans are checked against the California building code and they make sure it’s engineered to withstand the weight its retaining.

This makes me wanna go back and look at your house tour all over again 🤣💗

Y'all are so refreshing to watch/here y'all remind me of my husband and I. Except we broke 😂 but anyways we live in Texas, South of Houston. And dead ass, a 5 million dollar home in LA is like a 500,000 home here. It's all about location location location. My husband and I bought our first home three years andI wish we had more time to look at houses but we were kind of rushed because we had gotten flooded out with Harvey.we have kids and it was us, and my in-laws + living with my mother-in-law's sister until we were able to find a house. I remember just thinking that if we had more time we could have easily found a better home. But because of getting a fixer-upper type of house and going through all the things we did we're still sitting here unable to do stuff to the house and we easily could have gone a brand new house and been able to keep up with mortgage and everything. you can easily buy like 50 acres here, and build a mansion, and it will probably be like $750,000 at the most and that's completely you own. the only areas that are expensive around here in Texas is really Austin because they're trying to make it like a mini California.
