I used to work in fraud prevention for big bank. What probably happened with all those declines, is Amex, or Visa or Mastercard had an accidental fraud alert hit because I am assuming Hasbro was billing as a Toy Store. So, a toy store for over a grand is super sketchy, and not very normal. And once one of those fraud alerts gets created like that, it will keep blocking tons of stuff until the payment processors adjust on the backend. One off events or sales like this sometimes trigger those type of alerts because they're not normal spending.

If one black lotus is lost, or graded, every year for infinity (in theory), eventually there will be no more black lotuses, which means no one could play vintage anymore with a black lotus someday... This seemed like an attempt to build a new faith based economy around the idea that they need to reprint things eventually, and that they made a mistake making the reserved list to begin with, and they're trying to travel back in time and release things at, what they felt, was an appropriate buyin level, to justify the printing of new legal vintage cards... Except, they didn't say that, so we said, as a community... "No Fkn Way, (Has)Bro!"

Reasons for 20% rejected payments: 1. site blocked attempts to buy more than the allowed quantity of 2 (two) 2. site blocked payments from sneakerbots or suspected bots 3. bank blocking payment for suspected fraud (Hasbro bills as a toy vendor, so a bank is likely to block a payment of over 1k because they think you're being scammed) This kind of thing is common with other high-end products like limited release band merch, shoes, designer clothes, graphics cards, custom keyboard parts, etc.

The "Attempts at sale" may not be credit cards declined. It may be that they got to the payment entry page and didn't complete the purchase. I know there were a lot of people who were adding items to their cart and starting the checkout process to see if they were still in stock.

No, tens of thousands of people added this to their cart. I know I did. I even went to the payment page, and damn near pulled the trigger. Wish I had now, these things are going to be highly sought after due to rarity, until the means to release the rest is found. I know of a person who had several business credit cards rejected. Had to pay via direct bank acct transfer. Credit cards being declined only happens when the card is attempted to be charged. The above mentioned theory of banks quietly blacklisting WOTC due to SL taking months to ship is more likely. My guess if the high number of rejections show how many (few?) 'anything and everything' MTG addicts there are who cannot afford to be so, and found out the hard way they really need to get out of CC debt.

The funny thing is if Wizards and Hasbro decided to host a livestream where they did a bonfire to burn all of the remaining boxes and show it on camera, nobody would believe they didn't hold back more product. They have tarnished their reputation so much that nothing they say or show could make people believe what they say. I often take these videos with a huge grain of salt but I gotta say I hands down agree here - I'll bet they pulled based on abysmal sales, and then they went up back in stock again which was likely a technical error, but no doubt still had TONS in stock. Have seen maybe 4 sold listings on ebay last I checked. Great video!

I used to do development work on e-commerce platforms that processed credit card transactions. That failure rate you mention (around 20% or something?) seems very high. But I could see it for this case when you take the whole thing in context: a very small number of people trying to place $1,100-$5,500 orders in a half hour window, with some trying to make multiple transactions to get over the 5 item/order limit.
@StaringIntoAbyss

my thought was that the only people that actually went for this were scalpers trying to flip it for cash, and a higher than usual % were trying to use stolen credit cards to do it. Just a theory.

My bet is WotC didn't do that for this reason: They want that our collective consciousness keeps attributing very high artificial value to specific cards. These cards have a reputation. Don't want to see official black lotus proxied circulating around and be worth 10$ cause there is 100 000 copies of that card on the market. This is a guess. What you think really it could have donne to the spirit of the P9, duals and all if WotC would have sold 30 Edition at 5$ pack Standard set print run?

I just hope they slow down on printing new cards and can find a way to keep the ball rolling while preserving the integrity of the game. Nothing wrong with new sets coming out, but when its so rapid fire, with top tier power, and themes that deviate from the last 2 decades worth of stoicism and the unique style that only Magic the Gathering can bring to a game, really discourages me from wanting to buy new product.
