I’m so grateful I found you. I just started my solo house cleaning business to help my husband pay off our house. I have cleaned for a Ministry for 8 years, but it is completely different out in the “real world “ I love this series of mistakes house cleaners make. I have sadly done some already but grateful to learn others before I learn the hard way.

Your point about not giving away your services reminded of a plaque I once read. It said, "Do a little more each day and soon people will expect a little more.".

Some of the biggest mistakes house cleaners made taught them some of the biggest lessons of their careers. The school of hard knocks is the most expensive school if you never graduate.

I was listening to so many podcasts and books that I think my brain went on overload. So for time I stopped and was cleaning in silence. I think it was necessary for me. Now I'm back at starting to listen to things again and starting out with you Angela Brown because you are the first one I started with last year in 2020 when the virus started. You have helped me so much with your positive attitude and all of your knowledge and the consideration and kindness that you have for people. Keep on shining your light dear lady.😊

I listen to a lot of your videos while I clean my clients homes, just like you speak (#12) I have learned several different things by just listening while I clean, including finding my own spiritual journey and learning how to budget and deal with money. Thank you for putting out these videos, they help me become a more professional business owner.

Not a house cleaner, but the doing too much is really applicable in other fields too. At my last job, I knew I was only gonna be there for around 18 months, and I wanted to make sure I got a great recommendation. So, I performed tasks WAY above my pay grade and worked over 100 unpaid hours in those 18 months. I got my glowing recommendation, but I really screwed the expectations for that position. It's only been 6 months since I left and they're on their third replacement because they don't understand why the replacements can't keep up with my performance when the replacements are actually already doing more than the position originally outlined. ...Not to mentioned that they decided to round down the hourly pay by 70 cents from when I worked there.

The thing about referals also goes the other way, I feel. I had one housecleaner, she had to leave because she got another job, but recommended her sister. That worked out fine, however the sister also had to leave because she was finished with her studies, which is where their mother comes in. Let me be clear, she's a wonderful, kind person, but we just don't mesh and keep talking past each other. It's been really hard because I was kind of friends with the first daughter. It's really, really awkward.

The dumbest thing I’ve ever done in my cleaning business was, When I first open the business I was giving people quotes over the phone without seeing the home. I was doing it by the square footage rather than by the job. Hard hard lesson that I learned on that one

Hello Angela, I’m one if those who give extra cleaning time away. And I’ve also gotten rid of very close clients just so I can do without that extra time of giving my time away. I got resentful and would be depressed, but the good thing is , after I released them , I felt so much better. I’ve still got a few that I give time away. I’m ready to retire this year . I wonder what can I do to work from home . Good thing you’re here for us to learn from, I feel so much better when I listen to your advice. Thank you ✨✨🦋🦋🦋✨✨

Besides the awesome information and tips you provide, Angela, what also really shines is how calm and confident you are and how you set the boundaries so clearly. We strive for this in our business, too, but not as successfully. It gives people (both customers and employees) a sense of trust and security when it happens. Any more insight on this issue would be appreciated.

You won’t lose customers by letting go of another one. I’ve had to do that, and it never affected my business with others.

Thank you so much for all your advice, I lost all my customers last year and I am starting again and watching your channel has made me learn so much and be a bit more professional, as I tried too much people pleasing and had (and still struggle) problems with time management. Doing extra stuff for free really is a problem for home health care aides, too. I found out the hard way when working with a client who would resort to whining and tears when I tried to back off and only perform the tasks I'd been hired to do and was being paid for. I ended up leaving the job with a lot of resentment towards her AND myself ,for letting things get out of control.

Anyone who provides a service in the home needs to consider liability: taking people to their appointments? No way. If you get into an accident and that person is injured or killed -- guess who's liable?

I had to hire someone to help me clean when I was going through cancer treatment. She was a lovely person but one day I saw her sweep all of the ahes and cinder off of the fireplace hearth onto my new off-white carpet. I knew she intended to then vacuum it will up but I knew that my white carpet would now be gray in that area. I just asked her nicely if she could vacuum the ashes right from the hearth. But then, she was cleaning the bathroom with a product that had bleach in it, and she laid the bleachy rag and the bottle of cleaner down sideways on my blue wall-to-wall carpeting that was outside the bathroom. I guess you know what happened then. 😳

I have a customer that never picked up until I arrive. It's a mess. I should wait for her to get into the bathroom at least. I should wait on every area I will clean. I feel like that house and the lady steal all my energy. By the way she likes me to clean her house at 4:00 pm and still is a mess. I am getting tired of it. She pays 115 for 3 hrs.

Can you please recommend a dish rack that does not collect water and bacteria and does not look sooo ugly? We do not use our dishwasher.

Giving away too much for free. Ugh. I even do this to people that have the money to pay me. They don’t even ask, I just go waaaay above and beyond. I am trying to stop this.

I worked for a customer who, after 10 years, divorced, thus becoming 2 customers. Fast-forward 5 years, I just I just got rid of the ex-husband. I did forewarn the Wife, who I am retaining as a customer, the day before that if she was allowed to divorce her husband that I could as well!

Were you always clean? What made you want to be clean and get into The industry ?

Not to be rude but in one of your other videos you say focus on task at hand or you get sloppy, no zoning out. So if your trying to learn while your cleaning by listening to a podcast, etc, then you don't have all your attention on your job. Example the table has water rings on it so your concentrating on that, then you realize you missed a part of the podcast. Now your trying to find what you missed and what you were cleaning takes second place. Maybe some people can multitask and pay attention to their work while learning new things but a lot of people are going to slack in one area or the other, or both. Sometimes even a song will come on and it grabs your attention from what you're doing unless you basically know all the songs on a Playlist. I wouldn't have caught this but I just watched the tempting no nos video and that was your no 1 no no. I just think if your listening and trying to learn something or whatever that your mind is not on task at hand completely. It may be routine but you still need to pay close attention so you don't miss anything. I enjoy your videos and all your knowledge that you share with anyone wanting to listen.
