For anyone curious… he’s still in a medically induced coma, they’ve lowered his oxygen from 100% to 50% and they’ve apparently flipped him to his stomach to try and give his lungs some relief. This is all according to his uncle who gave an interview outside the hospital recently. Edit: apparently he’s neurologically intact, has opened his eyes, and is gripping hands of his loved ones. Idk how much help he’s still receiving or how aware he really is but this is obviously good news. Edit 2: this morning they took the breathing tube out and he FaceTimed teammates.

@miniciominiciominicio

That's... not great. They've only been able to lower his oxygen requirements because they proned him onto his stomach. Breathing on his own would mean that he was in a spontaneous breathing mode. If he's on 0.50, still in a coma, and proned, he's on a fully ventilated mode which means the ventilator is doing the work for his lungs. He's on a rate which means he has to breathe at that rate as the ventilator forces the positive pressure needed to achieve a target volume without causing pressure trauma to his lungs. He's not getting that breathing tube out for at least several days. So that will be touch and go. I wish him well though.

@@miniciominiciominicio he received minor lung damage idk if it was from them performing CPR and breaking his rib’s or being incubated. But they’re keeping him sedated so his heart can heal while they figure out what happened. It’s definitely still touch and go as your survival rate decreases by 10% every minute. It took them 9 minutes on the field to get a pulse then they lost him again in the ambulance. I’m live in Cincinnati and was in attendance the good news is he’s in one of the best trauma response centers in the State’s. I pray 🙏🏻 he continues to make a upward trend to recovering ❤️‍🩹

The problem with your logic... he was off the field in medical professional hands. Stopping the game isn't going to make him heal. Continuing the game isn't going to kill him. Other people have been injured (Though lesser) and the game continues with them being out. He likely would be out of the game for the rest of this year to be safe. Delaying the game does nothing but inconvenience everyone. It also means people will direct their anger at him as he becomes the cause. It also gives people legitimate arguments for unfair treatment. It may have been the worst call to stop the game since any decision doesn't change anything for the injured player.

Had this game on in the background even though I don't really watch professional football. When this happened, it was insane and still is. The Bengals player shouldn't feel bad. He did nothing wrong. It seems like Damar just got a once in a million perfect hit that messed him up. Seeing the grown men crying on the field let's you know it's serious. I've been checking on updated every few hours. He seems like a great young man. I hope having his heart stop for so long hasn't permanently damaged his brain. Edit: looks like he's awake and doing better. I donated to his charity, I suggest everyone look into it and donate (if you can of course.) Seems like a great cause. The words of encouragement board is filled with worried fans of all kinds of different NFL teams. Great to see a community that can often be very divided come together for a good cause and well wishes for Damar.

My friend posted this and had a similar opinion until I pointed something out that everyone seems to have missed. He made 4 tweets about this event and I'm gonna post them all together, in the order he made them. "Not exactly sure what happened to Damar Hamlin. Players on both teams are shaken. Ambulance out on the field. CPR administered. Can't remember play being stopped for this length of time. Just said a prayer for him and his family. I've seen so many horrific injuries suffered on football fields yet never have I seen a reaction like this. In every other situation I witnessed or covered, the game always went on fairly quickly. The attitude was, "Hey, that's football." For these players, this was DIFFERENT. No doubt the NFL is considering postponing the rest of this game - but how? This late in the season, a game of this magnitude is crucial to the regular-season outcome...which suddenly seems so irrelevant. Nothing is more important than that young man's health. That was the point of my last tweet. I'm sorry if that was misunderstood but his health is all that matters. Again, everything else is irrelevant. I prayed for him & will continue to." Now everyone seems to only pay attention to the 3rd and 4th tweet but nobody even acknowledged the fact that long before he made even either of those 2 tweets he made the first and second. When I read all 4 of those tweets together, I really don't see why everyone jumped on the hate train. Maybe just because of who he is, I don't keep up much with sports and I've never heard of Skip Bayless prior to yesterday, but when I look at all 4 of those tweets in order, I really don't see the hate as warranted. Honestly even just the third tweet out of context really didn't strike me as bad. I took it as he was pondering the thought of what's more important, a game that's crucial to the season outcome, or the young man's life which he ultimately decided that the "game crucial to the season outcome seems irrelevant." Which is quite literally what he said in the tweet. Again, I'm not familiar with him as a person but I really don't see why everyone jumped on the hate train.

Having absolutely no knowledge of skip, I read the tweet for the first time when you put it on screen here in the video and I read it as though he were concerned for Hamlin's health. To me it reads mostly as just the musings of someone who should keep most of their thoughts private unless the context for them is thoroughly understood. In the sense that he mentioned something that almost no one else cared about in that moment because it's kind of his job to think about those things. I didn't read it as though he were disappointed that the game was now less relevant, but that he was just saying it's less relevant to most people, but it's the kind of thing his mind goes to. Some people are just wired that way, when my grandfather passed away my mother had a complete breakdown (understandably that was her dad) meanwhile I just needed to go do ANYTHING else for a couple hours. Damar likely suffered a rare event called comido cordis. It can happen to anyone but typically in young athletes. After the heart discharges electrical activity it takes a short period of time to recharge. And if you get hit in the chest during a very specific time (called the relative refractory period) during the recharge, it can stop your heart completely or cause it to go into lethal arrhythmia. This is a very unfortunate event and I'm glad to see they were able to recover his pulse.

It came off as him laying out the foundation to show how big the scale was for the upcoming NFL playoff season so he could better show just how much more important Hamlin's situation was. Then I saw the massive backlash he immediately received and while I still understood what he technically meant, I could see why it was taken so negatively. I think the takeaway here was that Skip should have just not even brought up being curious about how the rest of the season was going to get handled and left it at wishing him the best. This was likely something called commotio cordis, and it happens around 20 times a year in the United States, usually in youth sporting events. It's caused by a blow to the chest in the correct(wrong) spot, at the correct(wrong) moment in the heart's "cardiac electrical cycle". It usually happens in youth baseball from a kid getting hit by the ball between the ribs right over the heart at the exact wrong moment. It's the very definition of a freak accident. If you watch the hit Damar Hamlin received it was a direct impact over his heart. Of course it could also be other stuff, there's actually a shockingly larger than you'd think number of instances of "sudden death syndrome" which is when someone under 35 goes into cardiac arrest. 20% of the time they never figure out why it happened. Usually the person had undiagnosed heart rhythm issues or thickening of the heart muscle. This medical phenomena has been used by anti-vaccine activists to push their agenda that young people are "all a sudden" dying from cardiac events, when the reality is this was already happening long before any vaccines were administered.
