Wave of the Day: Matahi Drollet, Teahupoo, Aug 13, 2021
Matahi Drollet is no stranger to giant Teahupoo. His older brother Manoa (along with Raimana Van Bastolaer) was among the first crew to really charge here over a decade ago; Manoa was also the one towing Matahi yesterday, during one of the biggest swells to hit that bit of reef since Code Red in 2011. We covered the day in realtime, where Kauli Vaast caught (but didn’t make) one of the most mutant, biggest waves ever in the morning. Others, including Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca and Eimeo Czermak, were whipped into and made XL beasts through the course of the day, but Drollet played the patience game. This paid off around 5pm, right before sunset, as the swell peaked and he was whipped in the perfect spot by his brother and took the perfect line through an impossibly heavy, crazy loud, building-sized tube - and straight into surf history.

@@Pedro370100 does Matahi want fame? Tahitian surfers seem happy with what they have and I don't believe they want their spots blown up like Pipe. The wave itself is more frightening, but I'd rather cope with Teahupoo than giant Nazare, due to the huge rips and swirls that you see on the inside there. If you caught on the inside at Nazare after a wave it looks like a complete nightmare just trying to get any movement when you're paddling.
@yoyopg123

@@hannotn I'd be a fool to argue with you. Having only seen both on video, at least in Teahupoo if you can make it past the reef you have some deep water on the inside to recover. Outrunning a freight train... on foot, no less! All surfers could feel the energies. My 68 year old heart raced and remembers 8 - 12 at Haleiwa, Ehukai, Sunset a half century ago. I was too chicken to go out in anything much bigger but we can just feel it. Out of 100 random surfers, I wonder how many would go out on this day? Waimea at 25 saw most surfers on the beach or cliff back in ‘69. But if you love surfing, you can just feel the adrenaline rush. 40 years since being tubed for the last time and I can still feel the sensations... more than skiing, snow or water, or skateboarding or skydiving, or Porsche track days. Wish I were 16 and back at 6-8’ Haleiwa.

Actually, let me do a little work because he deserves mention. I will get back to this in a few. But this particular wave did something different and Drollet, dragging his hand deep when us mere mortals would have dislocated our shoulder and it is not something usually done at this wave. It pulls so hard from the reef that you choose your line and ride that thunderous explosion and racing face.. Yes, but let me get back to you in a bit.

E P I C! Every time I watch this I just see the power of God and the beauty that He allows us to partner with His creation and enjoy it’s magnificence! Great job Marathi!!! “They, too, observed the Lord’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭107:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I'm much more impressed with 2 Kings 2:23-25 23 From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some boys came out of the town and jeered at him. “Get out of here, baldy!” they said. “Get out of here, baldy!” 24 Elisha (the bald one) turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the Lord. ...........Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the boys.

Whaaaat!!! First time to see Teahupoo flare. We all know it for a mechanically perfect slab, but to see it flare like this, and maybe one of the largest waves to be ridden on camera. Thank goodness we type these comments in, because I am tripping over my bottom lip. Maybe ride, Wave, of the Century?
