This is a story from a fellow sailor who had a completely different experience to ours sailing past the notorious Colombian coast.
We had perfect conditions, even leaving the spinnaker up at night, which we normally never do. We knew this area was a hot spot for high winds and in turn very high seas. Which is why we didn't spend much time in Aruba. When the weather looked right we knew we had to go, or else we may be waiting a long, long time. We were lucky!
We met Des, a fellow South African sailor who has sailed all the way here from South Africa single handed! Des left Sint Maarten in the Caribbean in perfect conditions. However whilst at sea and as he got closer to Colombia those conditions changed and he found himself in a life threatening situation with huge seas and no autopilot. With huge waves breaking into the cockpit he had the life raft ready to deploy should they need to.
We had to tell Des's story to warn others of this notorious stretch of coast.
Looking online it has caught many sailors off guard. It is rated at one of the 5 most dangerous areas in the world.
This is Des's story - we think its an exciting one!

Same place different time 1984. Forgot to check the barometer before leaving Bonaire. Big beautiful red sky sunrise. Wind hit 30 knots in the beginning. Second day never under 50. Gusts to 70. Big swells at 180 degrees and a weird one at 270 degrees coming from Colombia. Next morning wind abated but we hit a shallow patch and the ocean swells became breaking waves some tubing. Got pooped and I remember looking up and seeing the sun through the lip of the biggin. Our pals quit after 8 years sailing. We spent months at the Colon yacht club trying to calm down. Not quite the same afterwards... Best luck to all. Cheerio Jon

Hi Jon. Thanks for your message and for providing details of another experience along this coastline. Hopefully others get to see the video and your comment and will take extra caution when planning this passage. Thank you....

Scary but what a great story. It reminds me of what we called hanger stories that were told at airports about flying adventures that didn’t always go as planned.

Hi Rob. Quite a story and scary to hear about it as we didn't realise how dangerous this coast can be when we did the crossing on Mokara. I can imagine Pilots must have many similar stories. Regards from all on Mokara.

Completely agree Kevin! Sea state is such an important element of sailing, sometimes we tend to just look at wind! This coast is scary, now that we have been searching there is loads that comes up on it!

We realised how lucky we were after speaking to Des. We find we can rely n the weather forecast for 4 days. This makes planning a longer passage more of a challenge particularly where there are localised conditions. We are glad he made it and I hope others planning this passage watch the video and take extra care. Thanks for messaging us.
